Wk of April 20 - WISH Walking/Running Club

I guess it really comes down to what you want to be? I feel that it's great that we talk about being a team but until you actually do something as a team you're nothing but a group of individuals all with the same shirt.
--DB

Sir, I think I must have a very different definition of team than you do, and it has nothing to do with matching shirts. WISH has done so much for a great many people. I know I was approaching my 50th birthday as a total couch-potato when I stumbled upon the posts by WISHers returning from the Jan 2005 half marathon. Their excitement and energy were contagious. My life has not been the same since. I have done things I never imagined possible, all supported and encouraged by my fellow WISHers. I don't post much, but I am always here. This is a wonderful, welcoming place. WISHers Rock!

If anyone outside of the group can't answer the question then we must be doing something wrong so maybe we all just need to step outside the box and view things from the outside and instead of being offended we might be able to add some insight into things and make them better...

--DB

I really think you should think a little harder before you post. We've gone from in teh teens to over 100 ii alittle over 3 years. How many gruops do you know who can do that. I don't think we've done anything wrong. Are there things we could do better, sure? And that's what we've been discussing. When we look fr leadership to take us there, though, I want those poeple to be people who understand what WISH is about.

I don't mean to be rude. I never like to offend anyone. However, I've never seen you post in teh spirit of WISH team (Supporting anyone, asking for help, etc...). FOrgive me if I've missed something, but I don't see where you come off telling us what direction we should take now.

I can tell you our attitude at races and our support of each other and outsiders has caused many groups to take notice. People who ask are impressed. I don't recognize many of teh charity groups out there adn I guess, IMO, it's not about being recognized.

SO, much for my posts that are always upbeat. :guilty: I think Scott jinxed me. ;)

Count me in the 100 offended.

Sorry, guys. I know I haven't been around much, but I just felt the need to chime in.

Some of you know my story. I was sick with a potentially fatal heart condition for 9 years and 11 months. My fourth heart surgery was in January 2005 when a "cowboy" doctor did an unprecedented and unprotocol-ed procedure on my heart that took nearly 8 hours and a lot of courage. When I came home, I decided it was time to get healthy. I soon found the WISH boards and found encouragement to begin a healthy eating and fitness program. My first unattainable-but-attained goal was to finish the 2006 1/2 marathon, exactly 1 year and 1 day after that fourth surgery.

My WISH board friends literally completed the job that doctor started -- they helped me turn my life around. It is only because of the community I have found here and the comaraderie we share all year and at races that I have stayed on task and completed so many endeavors I would never have begun, including finishing the WDW Full Marathon twice.

We are not a bunch of people with the same shirts. I really do resent that. We are a family. Pretty darn welcoming, too, if I do say so myself. I don't know whether you have been around here, providing support or availing yourself of the support and encouragement that is to be found. If not, I feel sorry for you. You don't even know what you are missing. I hope you will spend some time here and really find out what we are about. The fact that this group has grown exponentially in the 3 years and 3 months I've been here tells me we are serving the needs of the many. We may all come and go depending on the other commitments in our lives, but I'd bet almost every person who posts regularly on the WISH events/competition part of this forum can name 5 WISH team members that they know they can turn to at any given moment for advice and encouragement and kudos. I consider WISH a true blessing in my life. It has provided more for me than I can ever tell you and a hell of a lot more than the 4 WISH shirts, WISH visor, WISH gym bag, WISH socks, etc. Oh, and by the way? None of those were an entrepeneurial endeavor. Instead they are the constant reminders in my house, at the gym, at my training course that I take with me and surround myself with to remind me that our goal is to be inspired and to inspire others to be and stay healthy.

And well, that's great...I'm happy for you...but you can do more...that's all I'm suggesting. Do we really need to say, well, you've found the Disboards and found the W.I.S.H. forum and now we've been able to help you or do you want to reach out to everybody else and be proactive instead of reactive. Right now people have to come to us. Why don't we take a stand and say we're going to do this for other people outside of our own little Disboards W.I.S.H. forum fishbowl so that they can hear stories like your own and we can be something even greater than we are now? Is that so wrong? If you are not progressing you're regressing! Good is not good enough and more is just a start.

Just because I don't accept that we have done enough for people lives and just because I know that we can do more doesn't make me ignorant of what this forum is really about.

The beauty of WISH is that we are a group of "cyber friends" who enjoy doing Disney and getting into shape. As friends, we talk to each other weekly, daily, sometimes hourly. We share our ups and downs, successes and failures, tips, advice, whatever.

We do not know you, Dirty Bunny. The only time you appear on this board is when there is a discussion about merchandise. Any merchandise that we, as a team, come up with is done AT NO PROFIT and is a TEAM effort. In fact, the people that have volunteered to head up one of our shirt/sock/visor purchases has probably had to pay for the opportunity (thanks, team!).

We had this discussion with you last year, Dirty Bunny, when you showed up at shirt ordering time. Again, we do not know you. You have not earned our trust. Please come join us here on a regular basis to find out that we are waaaayyy more than just "wearing the same shirt."

I can help give you a little help right now, saying things like the above make you sound like a rude and snotty elitist. I'm a member of W.I.S.H. so I can give my opinion on the possible direction we could take. We all have the right to have a voice. Just because I don't agree with you doesn't necessarily make you right and me wrong. I post when I feel the need to and when the mood strikes me but don't you dare ever call me out for not doing what I'm doing right now...providing my opinion...because I've never been short with that so next time you try to call someone for not helping you may want to go back and do a post search instead of putting your racing flat in your mouth.

You have a lot of nerve. You don't know me as a person. Don't judge me. Frankly, I'm sorry I engaged in your discussion here. Don't accuse any of us of being in a fishbowl, either. You have no idea the number of people those of us wearing the WISH colors have positively influenced on the race course. And many of those people are now WISH team members. Don't accuse any of us of "regressing" -- every step every one of us takes is significant. We count. Don't presume to think any single one of us is insignificant. And literally, until you have been in the company of WISHers I don't think you will understand who we are and what we stand for.

And what does the fact that I ask about merchandise have anything to do with this? Because I come up with ideas for things that no one ever thought about instantly I'm trying to become some sort of W.I.S.H. pirate that's trying to rape and pillage your virgin forum? Why not ask me? Oh, yeah...I'm just trying to make money off everyone. I've only tried to contact all of these companies on my own time to see if things can actually be done, what the cost would be and work on the designs all so I can screw over one webforum and make a profit. Yeah, way to be a hypocrite. You've never tried to get to know me but yet you judge me in the same sentence?

Talk of where WISH can go in the future, it is going to be interesting. I truly believe that the primary focus of the group is to inspire one another to commit to a healthier lifestyle and I hope that focus stays true in the future. While I may not have met a lot of you I know I can count on you for support. The fact that Anne always remembers me (and her cheering at the marathon, Anne, you have no idea how much of a lifesaver you were), or that I can come here for guidance or an "atta boy" means a lot. Most of my training is done on my own, so the motivation I get from the boards is invaluable. I may not have worn the shirt in a race yet, but I definitely feel part of the team, so thanks!

On another note - I love my chiropractor! After some ART my leg/shin is feeling better. The culprit? Tight calves, and even more so, tight hip flexors! Here's hoping I'm on the road to recovery!

Leana -- So glad your chiropractor was able to provide relief. Are there any exercises or stretches you can do to loosen your calves or hip flexors?

I have the guts to publish my phone number on the web forum and anyone here who wants to call me so that we can have a meaningful talk about one possibile vision for the future can do it. The rest is up to you.

We now resume our regular posts......:) [Perhaps a separate thread on the future direction of WISH is in order?]

Scott I love the sound of a "restathlon"--does it involve food and maybe naps?

Carrie I have a wide screen TV, but I guess I need a wide-screen monitor! Your posts are so expansive (and always interesting)

Leana Ditto, ditto, ditto. And I hope my massage therapist is as good as your chiropractor. What is ART?

Cosi Bella Welcome and congrats on the Disney fairy tale wedding--my niece has this scoped out already--of course, she's only 17, but no matter--even if it's in 10-20-30 years, I guarantee that's where she'll be married! The half marathon is full--can the Disney wedding people pull strings?

Hope everyone has a great evening.

Maura

Cosi Bella -- :welcome: So glad to see you here! What a wonderful way to combine the fun of your planning session and Marathon weekend! :woohoo: Howard and I did our site visit in January, right after the marathon. Our VR will be the day after marathon weekend in January. You are right -- training for an event is a great way to get very fit! :thumbsup2 Looking forward to sharing your journey! :goodvibes

Leana Ditto, ditto, ditto. And I hope my massage therapist is as good as your chiropractor. What is ART?

Hi Maura - ART is Active Release Techniques. You can read more about it here: http://www.activerelease.com/ and find a provider. It involves finding trigger points in your muscles and using pressure and stretching to "work the knots out." I had issues last year with my piriformis (which literally translated to having a pain in my rear) and this helped me a lot. I've found a combo of massage and the odd visit to the chiro for a tune up helps a lot. When is your massage?

Thanks Cam! I can definitely (and should definitely) try to stretch that area more often. I'm heading back for a follow up session on Friday so I'll be sure to ask if he can recommend some new stretches.

Well this isn't winning customers...:lmao: Telling off posters who post here daily will not make the rest of us think "we should trust this guy"

And you are publishing your phone number? HELLO! !! For all you know we are all serial killers........:confused3

And to be honest I don't care about creating a brand or finding a cause. When you are dealing with an interent group you are NOT going to find a cause they all agree on and I don't want to do fund rasing... If I did I would join an existing team.

I also think that these "branding" ideas have an issue. The DIS is a for profit website. If we expand to "getting Nike" etc involved then the owners of that board who have allowed us to play for free would have a legitimate right to (a) charge us or (b) kick us out LOL! Running something commercial and/or charity oriented on here should not even be considered without their approval.

And here's a clue from my marketing 101 class at UT years ago... You don't start with "how much are you willing to pay?" First you start with PRODUCT and then work from there. Other posters on this board have done just that "I am willing to get hats for $X or socks for $Y" and if someone wants to pay them and they get enough orders they do it. Socks seem to have died. So if you want us to have lime green warmups. (That's a scary thought LOL!) then get a vendor to give you a price and post the details. However, the DIS rules you agreed to when you sign up say it can't be for profit.

Right now your posts appear to be "fishing" for something and IMHO it sounds like you want to run a business.... I may be wrong, but just "how much would you pay" FOR WHAT???? Since you are not offering anything the response is exactly the same... nothing!

Okay, okay, folks. Let me just get this out of the way before I reply to everyone else's marvelous days and what appears to be a very scintillating conversational turn...

I'm taking a rest day! :lmao: :thumbsup2 I do think Scott, Amy, Craig, Bill, Carrie, TXAng, Stacie, and anyone else I may have missed who counseled that I listen to my body's rather willful whining are RIGHT, as is Cecilia's recommendation entirely CORRECT suggestion that I pay attention to my hydration.

It's just frustrating to do so. I have the time to train harder than I have before, and the willpower. In my mind, I hear all the reasons to continue to work out: Gentlemen, we can rebuild her. She owns the technology. She has the capability to become the world's first bionic WISHer. Debra will be that woman. Better than she was before. Better, stronger, faster. The spirit is willing, but the body isn't cooperating. It is weak (Or wiser than I am. Take your pick.) So I'm working on resting and hoping that the rest days will address at least some of my many issues.

And I know that I give that advice far better than I take it. :rolleyes1 Hey, I'm comfortable in my hypocrisy. Just keep calling me on it. :upsidedow

And in case I haven't said so, I truly appreciate all the support, advice, encouragement and even laughs you all give me on a daily basis! That's why I love WISH!

I am interrupting this thread to bring you a little primer on REST. I have been having to tell too many people to rest lately so now everyone gets to hear as I step up on my soap box:

REST is a vital part of any training program. You are not slacking off and you are not losing ground when you give your body a rest. Your body does more muscle building on your rest days than it does on your run days!

You build stronger muscles by pushing them past a certain stress point. Tiny tears occur in the muscles. When the body is resting, it repairs these tiny tears making the muscle stronger than it was before. If you don't rest then you get more and more tiny tears and the body can't keep up with the damage. (anyone with a medical background please jump in here ....)

To mentally accept this, you may have to write REST in your log books, calendars, etc. I like to write it big. Back during my Goofy training, I wrote REST in big bubble letters with giant smilie faces. Not because I loved the rest days, but to take up all the room so I couldn't write a workout in if I cheated.

All training plans have built in rest days. Running, Biking, Body Building, etc. Even the month long Tour de France has rest days built in (ignore the fact that the racers actually ride on those days, I am trying to make a point)

Rest is not bad or weak. It is vital! (Now if you take off more than a week then you are really taking advantage of the whole concept and you will eventually start losing ground but thats another topic.)

Now back to the thread...

...but until you actually do something as a team you're nothing but a group of individuals all with the same shirt.
Wow. Just wow.
You obviously have no understanding what this wonderful group of people is about.

Every single solitary race I have done, I have people commenting about my shirt. Telling me they love the "DLF>DNF>DNS" because it is so true. So, in actuality, the shirt & this team do mean something.

Also, I own alot more than a shirt. I have a backpack, socks, 2 hats, multiple shirts and several bracelets.

I could write alot more, but I think several old time WISHers have already covered all the bases. :grouphug:

Please take part in some races with other WISHers and get to know us before making such statements.

Whoa, I blinked and just WHAT HAPPENED TODAY?

I thought we were all runners/walkers with a Disney problem? :rotfl:
::MickeyMo ::MinnieMo pluto: pooh: :tinker: :simba: :ccat: :donald: :stitch: :dumbo: :sulley: :tigger: :figment: :eeyore: :goofy: :hmghost:

Let's all get back to training, resting, eating ice cream, and baking cookies.

Well, since we all know you can't sell anything for profit here I don't know why that's ever been brought up other than to bash me. My goal has never been to make a profit, I don't want to make a profit and I don't think I ever would make a profit at this. WebmasterPete's made that abundantly clear from the beginning that the only one making a profit from this was him.

As for ideas, I could go ahead and resucitate everything I've ever brought up but everyone seems to just want socks and shirts. Hence the reason for trying to think outside of the box.

As for the reason behind asking how much you would pay is because let's put it bluntly...some people are cheap...if we do a poll and 50% of the respondents say they wouldn't spend more than $20 on a W.I.S.H. branded item I don't think I would be able to order enough not to have the item be exorbitantly expensive be it a Tri Suit, Warm Ups or a Lime Green pair of shorts. If I get a large group of people that say step up and say "Hey, if you can find a manufacturer that'll make a good quality product and we can get enough people to order it to make it worth our while we'll pay good money" then great I can call Brooks or Sugoi and have them do something custom for us.
