Wk of April 20 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Debra: See...your very own special post :). Anyway...I'm concerned for you. I was completely in your place last week and I have to say that the rest days did WONDERS for me!!!!! I feel so much better and have tons more energy. I think we're all pushing our training so hard that we will have weeks when it catches up to us. Take some rest days...enjoy that ice cream (yum!) and just allow yourself to back off for a day or two if need be. You'll come back stronger than ever, I'm convinced of it!!!!!

Take care of yourself!!!

As for me: Unfortunately, I had a shoddy 6 miler this weekend: heavy legs in the beginnning, fatiqued & achy by the end. I ended up almost going slower by 30 seconds per mile slower than my regular pace. :sad2: And my exhaustion has continued into today, so I'm trying to lighten my WO load for a couple of days because I'm also doing a lot of pedestrian/commuter walking for the next few weekends (which I'm feeling, too).

Anyway, I consoled myself with ice cream. Okay, so the ice cream had been planned since seeing that academic lecture last week, but it was still a consolation for me. Plus, I figure that ice cream, having the word ice in it, is a version of the RICE remedy. Right? And for those who are interested, the flavor I chose: Pecan Praline, single scoop, in a dish. Make of that what you will. :rolleyes1

Debra - Take a break :) Heavy legs, fatigue, achy...your body is saying "Hey Debra, please rest me! Rest me, Rest me!" (if you actually hear those voices, um.....don't tell anyone...) LOVE the ice cream consolation though!! I have to remember that for future times of trouble...and the Pecan Praline sounds delish!! (nutty, different but not to the weirdo state, very reliable, there when needed) Take care of yourself please!!

Martha

I would love to be the Russel Means character in The Last of the Mohicans, well except for the loss of Uncas. With age does come wisdom and experience, simultaneous with body part beginning to fall off.

Angie

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Good first day at the new job, AND TAKE CARE OF YOUR BACK. Remember, I am a Doctor, if only one who can derive the capital asset pricing model.

Debra

Easy on those legs, too much work oddly enough makes them heavy.

Judith Anne

As I told you on the phone, I've broken easily double digits in bones, and in my middle age I've begun to match that with muscle pulls, strains, and tears, both large and small.

Ice that thing. Take the anti-inflammatories. Stretch the he** out of it, multiple times a day. Scar tissue wants to form in the strain area, don't let it. Use your roller on the strain area, this also helps keep the scar tissue away. Begin you ham curls, lots of reps with little weight. As the days go by stay with lots of reps and increase the weight ever so slightly.

And . . . shorten your stride. The ham likes to strain or tear when your leg is extended fully and the momentum of your stride brings your foot down, which maximizes the stress on the hamstring. By shortening your stride, even a couple of inches you reduce the stress on the muscle.

And good form stopping before the strain became a tear. If you're not seeing a little spot of blood under the skin at the point of injury, you didn't tear it, just strained it a bit. Soft tissue injuries only get worse when you try to run through it. I know, I have a small knot inside my left calf from doing this stupid thing 4 years ago precisely.

Mel

20 years? If you ask Martha, in 20 years I am supposed to be completely retired, living alternatively in Breckenridge and Hawaii. Unfortunately, as best I can calculate, I'll need to work 120 years to get the necessary money to do this.

Reality Check

Today it was beautiful in the Boston area, so after grading research papers all day I hit the track. 1 mile warm up, 5000 meters in 25:41 (8:16 per mile) 400 meter cool down, 7000 meters in total. I'm feeling good, yes I am one bad dude. Moonwalking around the house.

So, I check on line for the Boston Marathon results. The male winner runs 2:07 and change, and best of all, he broke the field in mile 19 in the Newton Hills, Heartbreak Hill, when he throws in a 4:37 mile.

I think I need to recalibrate my view of today's performance. It's not that I'm slow, heck, I'd be very competitive in the over 80's pirate: .

Best to all

Craig

120 years, uh, you may need to double that figure Craig :rotfl2: , and I'm speaking from personal experience.

Scott: My friend and racing partner, Marcia (aka Mooshu) is doing the AIDS/Lifecycle race in June with a friend of hers. It's 545 miles, from San Francisco to Los Angeles over 7 days.

Check out her blog:

I agree, it sure was quiet around here without Deb posting about monkey's and their ice cream. LOL. Who knows Deb, after I make my 100th blood donation soon, I'll get my tattoo, and take a break from donating for just a year. That will be my reward for 24 years of being a donor.

Angie: Dog gone it, REST!!!

The very last runner I saw had to be 85. I just looked at him with such awe. What a task and how awesome to be at that age in life and just going for it. It was quite moving.

what is the qualifying time for an 85 year old? I may have a chance at getting in, in 44 years. :rotfl: :rotfl2:

Here's my staff notes from the Honolulu Marathon Clinic. Each week, the group leader has to send in a report on the Sunday run, and it gets compiled into a weekly newsletter that gets sent out to all members here in the islands, expatriates on the mainland, and service members around the world.

Pink report:

We started off with a dozen or so, and lost a few to the reds, and a few to the whites along the way. With Rosie being on the mainland, Jewels and I helped keep the group upbeat, and in the right direction.

Along for the run were Bill, Miley, Jana, James, Chris, Marie, and a few others who's names unfortunately slip my mind (my apologies). Somewhere along the way we picked up Summer and her friend (again another name has slipped my mind). Will someone get me a notepad!

We experimented with saying "hello" to everyone one we crossed paths with, and passed along the way. What we found was we snapped a lot of people out of their trances, and got a lot of smiles and "hello's" in return. It was fun, and kept us laughing and smiling for the 8.25 miles to the gas station and back.

We ran up Kahala Avenue, chanting "I love Kahala Avenue" over and over.

We tried to keep a consistent pace of 10 minutes per mile, but some were slightly off pace +/- 30 to 40 seconds.

Had a great time gang, keep up the good work, and see you out on the highways and byways.

Thanks to the table staff that had the delicious brownies and cold Coke refreshments, it really hit the spot.

Angie - Glad you had a great first day! :goodvibes Sorry to hear about your aching back :sad2: Take care of that. Give it some rest and ice. Don't overdo it.

Debra - I hope to add more Dis and training time, too. Not graduating though. Just finishing up a class for the semester. With work being so crazy, I am glad I did not sign up for a summer class.

Judy - Hope your hammy is doing better.

A girl who works for me ran in today's Boston Marathon. She did great! Finished in 3:22:38. That's just about my 1/2 marathon time!;)

Terri

Well I survived another weekend although I wanted more sleep as usual. My run Saturday was delayed a few hours due to smoking some pork. I figured if I got up early to start that, I could sleep off and on checking on thing. :rolleyes1 The results were quite good though.

Monday I did the noble task of trying to get Billy registered for Kindergarten but I think the secretary didn't trust me in filling out the forms and just gave me the packet for Lynnda to fill out. Hopefully they will get filled out soon and I can take them back. Lynnda keeps claiming that he is too young to start and needs to stay home for another 20 years or so. :lmao:

It was also her birthday and being the not so bright hubby, she had to go to the store to get her own cake. I am sure I will pay for this somehow, but I did remember the presents which I figured was more important.

Jeff - Thanks for the Lost updates but you really need to answer the real questions, like who is in the coffin, what is up with Smokey... ;) Congrats on working on your 100th donation.

Craig - Not sure about the age and wisdom thing. Maybe that only happens in select people. You are definately wiser than your age implies or maybe it is I can't judge ages very well. :lmao: As for retirement, you just need a van or an RV and a WalMart parking lot. Can't get much cheaper and keep Martha happy. ;)

Amy - A teacher actually doing the work as well. The first rule of teaching is to make the students suffer while you sit back and watch them squirm. :lmao: Hope you are feeling as good today.

Debra - Hope you are feeling better soon. It may be good to take a day or two off for a little recovery. The most important question, how large was the scoop. If it was 1/4 of a gallon or more then it wouldn't fit on a cone and would necessitate a dish. :rotfl2:

Scott - Great job on the bike and run. I agree that you should be taking part in the Tour De Georgia and not just watching it.

Kristi - It's not quite too late for Minnie. You could always come down here. Glad you found a running clinic for Zack although it does sound like he has a busy summer planned. You probably wouldn't want to run here in the summer if you weren't used to it. Shoot I don't want to and I am used to it. :lmao:

Allyson - Glad you were able to watch part of the Boston Marathon and enjoyed it.

Vic - Nice tat, but I still am not going to get one. I don't care if everyone else is jumping off the bridge. :rolleyes1

Angie - Glad you had a good first day at work. Hope this new job continues to be what you hope it will be. Take care of your back so you don't get hurt worse.

Mel - Sorry about the stomach issues. Hope you can get that worked out before May. You are also doing good about planning ahead, I do well if I know what I am having for lunch/dinner a couple of hours beforehand. :rolleyes1

Liz - Hope you enjoyed your rest day.

Judy - You better take it easy or we will have to send some people out to straighten you out. :scared1: Although it could be a ruse to keep from doing manual labor around the barn. :rolleyes1

Judy, Mel, Kristi - Perhaps we need to send the dogcatcher after Sunny to figure out how she is doing...

Amps - Hope you are feeling better and have learned what to do next time. Getting dehydrated is no fun and can ruin a day pretty quickly.

Frank - Congrats on the 5k, you were flying.

PJ - Congrats on starting out and taking the first step. The races will come in due time but getting started is the most important thing.

Christa - Hope you enjoyed the show.

Dana - Happy Belated Birthday, Lynnda thinks that day is pretty special as well. Hope it was a good one.

Carol - Hope you are having fun working at the Mouse House.

Carrie - Congrats on getting your long run in under those circumstances. Great job on the negative splits at the end as well.

Martha - Hope you can find a gym that you like. In the meantime, just take your hubby and have him start talking about capital asset pricing models and I am sure they will leave quickly. :lmao:

TxAng - Now is the time to get to all the Disney parks. The kid is free and you have to get him brainwashed as soon as possible. :rolleyes1

Panda - Are you feeling ok. It has been awful quiet around here recently. I am worried that something might explode if you don't get the proper outlet. By the way I noticed you are opening a restaurant close to our house (Panda Express). I hope that you are properly represented there. :lmao:

Time for work, hope everyone has a good day.

Bill

Quick drive-by posting (hey, what do you expect from someone who works for a car company. Actually, I prefer walking to driving.)

Happy Earth Day everyone. I will walk over to another part of our campus today and pick up my free wildflower seeds and tree sapling.

Debra Thank you for your words of encouragement to me and the rest of the WISHers. I hope you realize the impact you have on people's attitude (and it's all good!)

Jeff I tend to be a solo person, and have yet to ever run with anyone else (which means this Minnie race oughta be interesting!), but I think you would be great to train with--even if it wasn't in Hawaii! I hope your trainees appreciate your efforts.

Anyway, still recovering from my run on Sunday (was walking pretty funny yersterday), so today did stretch/strengthen. Will try a 3-miler tomorrow and see how the body parts all check-in.

Now that my massage therapists-to-be are back from Boston (she did a PB and finished 14th at the trials), I will make that call for the "pampering". And I did see that GF has a sports massage at the spa--anyone ever try it? Could be a great treat for my Monday--massage and then afternoon tea before my flight home--AAAHHHHHH!!!!!

Maura

My run Saturday was delayed a few hours due to smoking some pork. :hippie:

'Scuse me?? :lmao:

You people on the other side of the state are C-R-A-Z-Y!

BTW, you now owe my boss a new monitor. Maybe I need to quit drinking Diet Pepsi.

Mel - I would love to contribute to WISH in anyway that I can. Let me know where to be and when. But um, if its going to be a long meeting then I have to run first and I have to bring food....
Allyson - I am with Jeff, what do you have to run to qualify at 85? I might make it by then.
Jeff- 100th blood donation?! WOW! I can't even give once. DH and I went to a blood drive right after 9/11 and they refused our blood. Evidently we have been exposed to mad cow disease and didn't even know it. (Living in Italy in 1983 was more dangerous than we thought.)
Amybeth- I gotta stop posting after you, since all I seem to say is "yeah what Amybeth said"
Scott - DH is a huge fan of the Tour de Georgia. He even rode in a stage of it last year. We have been to several of the finishes and always have a great time. They put on a great event. We were hoping to watch Brasstown Bald this year but it happens to be on the same day as CMM. If you get a chance on Saturday, go up and watch, I hear its amazing.
Deekaypee - Yeah, what Amybeth (and Scott) said - rest. But I am going to add that you should hydrate too. Sometime fatique is really dehydration in disquise.
Bill - You can make up for the cake by planning something special after you drop of DS for the first day of Kindergarten. When my youngest got on the bus with his big sisters I thought I would cheer. Nope, I couldn't get the cheer past this huge lump in my throat and that same lump made my eyes water something fierce.

Me? I am tapering for the Country Music Half this weekend. Dh has finally gotten his ITband issues under control and he is SUPER excited about this weekend. I am trying to be excited but its really just another race for me. How pathetic. I am trying not to have unrealistic expectations of another PR. We will just have to see what happens on race day.

Cecilia

Angie - Huge congrats ont eh first day!!!!!

Maura - It's medicinal, you know. not pampering. ;) Never done GF, but it's owned by the same poeple who run teh spa at SSR. Their Swedish is their version of a sports massage. She did wonders fro me post-Minnie. I could even tell her I had piri formis issues and she tortured (I mean addressed) that properly. Wonderful!

Amy - OMG, did I see you preaching rest???? :scared1: What has this world come too??? ;) ;) BTW, Pilates fo DUmmies arrived yesterday. I unwrapped it and looked at teh disk. Sadly, teh laundry that is not yet put away was in my work out area. :sad2: Story of my life.......

Debra - What Am and Scott said. You'll listen better to them anyway because I am the world's laziest marathoner. OMG, I can't believe that no one's associated RICE with ice cream tbefore! You are awesome!!!!! :rotfl2:

Bill and Lynnda - :grouphug: Hope that k-garten registration isn't too painful. Trust me, you don't want to keep him home forever. I know he's cute now, but I can show you pix of some cousins...... ;)

My Boston Friends - The guy from my bike path did well, but my former dentist is MIA. :-O As of last week, he was going. Bot even one split time, so I'm a bit concerned. Sadly, Scott adn I are too slow to wualifiy, even f 80 YOs. :sad2:

I exercised teh 10 minute rule last night. I was really sore from raking, but didn't think those were muscles I used to run. lol. Well, I must have been favoring them somehow, because betweenn teh 7:30 mamrk where I decided that it might be a 10 minute rule night and teh 10 minute mark lots of other stuff hurt too. So, I turned around. Took a hot bath in Dr. Teal's Epsom Salts, thank you funwalker! Feeling much better today. Yoga will help too.

Hey folks. I will try to make it back to catch up w/ everyone today, but I fear the office may be a bit hectic today.

I just wanted to pop in to update how my 7 miler went.

In case anyone is wondering...ever plan on visiting eastern NC...The Morehead side of the Beaufort/Morehead bridge over to Fort Macon is exactly 7 miles! My mom and I started out just as you cross over the bridge from Beaufort to Morehead at the waterfront. We ran through Morhead and the over the bridge to Atlantic Beach. I hear there is an overpass for the 15K so thought I should practice a bridge! Not too bad. It was kinda cool running over the Intracoastal Waterway. Then once at Atlantic Beach, we headed toward Fort Macon. My mom did the first 4 miles and then Matt joined for the last 3. The first 4 were ok. We would walk a bit, job a bit...repeat. We actually ran a bit up the bridge and most of the way down it. I will say though, those last few miles were not easy. It was hot though there was a nice breeze. My poor arms are now sunburned. Note to self. Do not run from 11 am to 1 pm. Good thing I had by hydration booty bag. I went through 42 oz of liqued and 2 packs of beans. My avg pace got slower and slower the further I went. I finished w/an avg pace 14:59. Not really what I was hoping for. I mostly walked the last few miles.

It will be interesting to see how this weekend's 8 miler goes. I think I'll be doing it alone, which I fear may actually make me slower. My mom is such a speedy walker!

Overall, it was ok. I'm done now. yay. The only lingering affects were on my right leg, just behind my knee which was super stiff on Saturday and then on Sunday, both of my hips hurt--right on my hip bones it felt like. Yesterday and today both of those issues seems to be fine. My right shin is a little sore today though. Weird. It may be weather. That is the leg I broke a few year back.

I missed my XT last night, but do plan to aquacise tonight. Tomorrow I've got a 5 miler scheduled so I'll see how I feel then.

7 miles is the furthest I've been so I was happy to make it through. That in an of itself is a victory.

Wow...That was long. Sorry.

Gotta run, hopefully I can catch up on everyone this afternoon!

Happy Training!
Stacie

Good Morning, WISHers!! I slept like a log last night but I am having a really hard time waking up this morning so please forgive my not addressing everyone individually. I just wanted to check in and say hi.. so hi :wave2:

I went out for a run in my new shoes last night (Nike Triax 11s)... I forgot my Nike+ sensor plug in so I have no idea how far I ran but they were like a dream! :cloud9: I just figured pain after running was par for the course but I felt great! Now if only I could figure out something for the massive hay fever attack I suffered post-run. Grr, allergies!!

Ya big sissy. :confused3 :rotfl:

Smoking pork? Does ZigZag make papers that big? :rolleyes1 ;)

Big Vic I love the Tattoo. If I ever get up the nerve to get one I'm getting one very close to that.

Sorry it's been a while since I posted in the weekly thread. Keeping up with the nubmers from our team has been a bear.

I took my first two days off in a row for the first time since early February over the weekend. Man did I feel great on Sunday. I have a 5k that our Relay for life team is having this Saturday. I may just walk it with my family as I have a half Marathon the following weekend.

I also broke out a new pair of shoes (Another pair of 2120's.) It really makes a difference to me when I do this. Makes my legs feel great.

Dana, hope your birthday yesterday rocked!

Angie, glad you had a great first day!

I'm sad to report that after taking a week off the hurt leg I had to stop at 1.5 miles today. I talked DH into going out with me. Just like my past runs since the half it started hurting around mile one. I wanted to go at least two or three today, but had to stop. My pace ended up 11:15. The pain was definitely in my left knee, my upper leg didn't hurt this time...

About to ice it and call the doc up. :headache:
I feel very sad...

Cecilia - I also fall into the refusal category. I lived in England around 1981~1982 and from 1988 to 1993 - the height of the mad cow disease era. Best of luck at the Country Music Half!

Shan - So sorry to hear your leg is still bothering you.

Chris - Yay for new shoes!

Vic - Love the artwork!

Morgan - Kudos on the great run, but sorry to hear about the hay fever attack.

Stacie - Congrats on finishing your longest run of 7 miles! Sorry to hear it was a tough one.

Maura - I hope the massage helps! I'm still suffering from shin issues too... Fingers crossed we both get it sorted out! I haven't been to the spa at the GF, but I did go get a massage at SSR the day after the Goofy and it was WONDERFUL!!!

Bill - Smoked pork....yummy!

Jeff - Qualifying for 80 and over is 5hrs 00min.

Amy - So glad to hear the rest days paid off last week! Good luck with the 5 or 6 miler today.

Debra - So sorry to hear your 6 miler wasn't good. Bad runs must be going around it seems! Hopefully a bit of a scale back or rest will help you out. Pecan Praline....yum, that sounds good!

Scott - Good job on the bike/run combo this weekend! How come you aren't participating in the Tour de Georgia?

As for me - I went out and ran 3 miles last night. It was -8 deg C (17 deg F), snowing and there was a ton of snow on the ground. The weather didn't feel too bad, but it was a pretty tough slog as my right shin was really giving me grief. It showed in my time - 36:57 (12:19/mi :scared1: ). I'm off to the chiro today to get some ART done on my shin and calf and hopefully that will help to sort the problem out, plus I've got a massage booked on Saturday.

Sorry I didn't get to everyone, gotta run!

Shan - SOund slike a trip to the doc is in order. :grouphug: You never know, sometimes they have fixes taht are not too hard on us. Is your doc and athelete? That helps a lot, as they understand that you want to take as little time off as possible. :wizard:

Leana - OMG, you have got to get out of the cold! Yikes!

goofyinOH - Good to see you! Thanks for teh remider that I need ot work on getting my totals caught up. Seems like if the teams are going to kep getting bigger that we need to change something. can't think of how, though.

Original Bill - thanks for making me super hungry for lunch now!! I agree that the presents were more important, but maybe we need to notate the calendar to remind you about the cake next year...or better yet, we can just have some WISH folks send her some cookies!

Maura - Wow! massage...tea...starting to make endurance events sound really appealing!

Cecilia - Would LOVE to see the Brasstown Bald stage but it's just not in the cards for me this year...gonna try to see the final stage on Sunday though. GOOD LUCK in Nashville this weekend! Have a blast up there :)

Carrie
- So...what exactly is the 10 minute rule again? If things are hurting 10 minutes in, go ahead and scrap the workout? I like that idea...good for injury prevention for sure! BTW, thanks for the always fun and upbeat posts on the boards, it's a delight to read what you have to say!

Stacie - Congrats on 7 miles!! Just be careful this week/weekend as you want to be well rested and feeling good for the Minnie events.

Morgan - Congrats on running in the new shoes!! Glad they work so well for you! Might want to do some googling, I wouldn't be surprised if Nike didn't have a running mask out there for allergy sufferers that also controls music and logs VO2 max or something :rotfl:

Leana - Awesome trip report on your blog! sorry to hear about the post-finish incidents, but you had a great run, congrats! The Tour de Georgia is a Professional only kind of thing...not sure I could maintain 30mph over 80 miles multiple days in a row LOL! Take care of your shin...stay healthy!

Amy
- Hope some self pampering has helped you out today ;) Good luck on the runs this week...stay healthy :goodvibes:

Scott's World - Completed the restathlon yesterday. I'm feeling pretty good today and am actually undecided on if I'm going to run, go to the fitness center or bike today. Indecisiveness rules my world (just ask Amy). I'm working on trying to find a way to go to Orlando a day early because I simply cannot wait to get there any longer.

(in my best Shatner voice..)

....need.....trip.......to..disney......can't....breathe....must....head.....South.....

Mel: One thing I would recommend for W.I.S.H. is getting with someone at Dreams Unlimited (what do I get for the plugola?) and see if a group rate could be arranged for race weekend. I would think we would have enough people for the WDW marathon weekend and maybe even for the DL Marathon, RFTT or ToT. Plus if we could get group rates more people might be able to afford a 3 day weekend trip for some of the smaller races. We could also qualify as a magical gathering and get some of those perks.

Just a thought.

Debra: I would love to be going for the Minnie. I figure there is a good chance of the Minnie falling the weekend of the Podcast cruise or after, either way I can swing it. One of my brother’s and I are bringing my mom on the podcast cruise for mother’s day and then we are going to hit WDW Thurs-Sun after the cruise. I figure if the race is the weekend before I will just fly down on Saturday and run the 15K on Sunday before heading over to the cruise. If it is the weekend after I am there anyway so it would be even better.

I have softball practice today so I will count today as speed work. There is a 10 Miler at the Cleveland House of Blues this weekend I am doing so I will probably do 8 miles tomorrow and then a short run Friday with some biking and weights (weather permitting) Thursday.
