Wk of April 20 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Carrie[/B] - So...what exactly is the 10 minute rule again? If things are hurting 10 minutes in, go ahead and scrap the workout? I like that idea...good for injury prevention for sure!

The 10 Minute Rule: It's got a couple uses. First, on a day when you don't want to get off the couch, you tell yourself, "I am just going to run 10 minutes. If I still don't feel like runniing, I will turn around and come back." You can always just do 10 minutes.

More often, however, I use it as a body check. If I get started and things are hurting, I give myself teh 10 minute rule. If the hurts don't smooth out after 10 minutes in, I get to turn around. For me, that ends up within a minute or so of a mile, so sometimes I jsut go to teh mile and tehn turn around so I don't feel liek I whimped out. You're right, though, it's a great way to make sure you don't over do something that's hurting. (I'll pretend I wasn't just scamming out of a workout. :rolleyes1 )

BTW, thanks for the always fun and upbeat posts on the boards, it's a delight to read what you have to say!
OMG, do you mind if I quote this in every post I make for the forseeable future? :rotfl: I need you to be my hype guy, like on teh Geico commercials! Glad you like them, although I think I pale in comparison to you and Debra for teh fun and upbeat factors. Thanks fro amking my day, though! :goodvibes :goodvibes :goodvibes I know I met you with Amy at Pop, but I must admit that I had waited a couple years to meet Amy and she overshadowed you a bit. Now, I am really bummed that I missed that opportunity. I get a little overwhelmed at the big meets too. Can't wait to meet you at Minnie, though! P.S. You obviously weren't around for year 1 when I whined and complained about runnign with dh in almost every post I made. :scared:

Allie – I know it’s late, but Happy Birthday!

Martha – Yay for joining a new gym! Hope your IT band is feeling better.

Vic – Cool tattoo!

Mel – I wish I was brave enough to get a tattoo, but I’m a big chicken!

Angie – I’m so glad that your new job is everything you hoped it would be. That’s wonderful news!! I’m sorry to hear about your back, though. Take care of yourself!

Dana – Happy Birthday! Hope things continue to look up.

Christa – Yay for going to see Wicked! We saw it in Hollywood when we lived out in CA. Loved it.

Patricia – WTG on getting out there and starting your C25K. How did it go?

Frank – Do it! See, I’m no help at convincing people to stay away from Disney, either.

Amps – Sorry that you were feeling ill after your run.

Judy – Hope your hamstring feels better.

Allyson – Glad you had a great time at Boston! I’d love to go see it in person someday (as a spectator, of course, cause there’s no WAY I’ll ever be speedy enough to run it!)

Debra – Sorry about the crummy 6-miler. It does sound like you could use some rest days. So, did the ice cream work as a consolation? I would have gotten two scoops since it was calorie-free. ;) :)

Amy – Glad you’re feeling good after that LR!

Bill – Time for Kindergarten already? Who do these kids think they are, growing up so fast?

Cecilia – Glad that your DH is feeling better. Hope you both have an awesome race!

Carrie – Good for you for following the 10-minute rule. Glad you’re feeling better.

Stacie – WTG on completing your first 7-miler! That’s great!

Morgan – Yay for new shoes! Boo for allergies.

Shan – Oh, no! I’m so sorry your leg is still hurting. Let us know what the doc says! :wizard:

Leana – Brrr! Hope your leg feels better.

As for me - I did W2D1 of C25K today: 1.85 miles in 27:00. Cut the cool down short by a couple minutes since we were back at the house already, so the last couple of minutes of cool down were just me walking around the house a bit with the baby. It was warm and VERY muggy. Seems that summer weather is already here for us.

I casually mentioned to my dad the other day that we might think about coming out to CA for the half. He, of course, thinks that it's a fabulous idea! He and my stepmother have DL APs this year, so we could all spend a couple of days in Anaheim. Getting harder and harder to stop myself from going into all-out trip planning mode. :rolleyes1

Sorry it's been a while since I posted in the weekly thread. Keeping up with the numbers from our team has been a bear.

And we teammates love you for taking the time and effort to record our totals! :thumbsup2  :grouphug:

OK, I know I'm haveing a bear of little brain week, but will someone, please tell me what the D in W1D1 stands for? All I can think of is drop, dread, desist?

My run Saturday was delayed a few hours due to smoking some pork.

Bill

I thought this meant Bill ran the Flying Pig Marathon, and was running really fast. :rotfl:

Leanna: I just read your race report on your blog. Nicely done, too bad for the post race pickup and no food.

I'm exhausted just looking at your race schedule for the year. You better take it easy and not over do it before January's WDW marathon.

I'm back...as promised to catch up w/ everyone!

Shan...I am so sorry your leg is still bothering you! I hope you and your Dr can figure out what's going on.

Leana...I hope you have a successul visit to the chiro and your shin is feeling better very soon. Girl. Those are some freezing temps! Brrr. I don't know how you do it! :goodvibes

Morgan...Great job on your 5K. New shoes are awesome. I hope your allergies get better soon!

Chris...Yay for new shoes. When I first read your post I thought you said your broke your shoes. I though...Hmmm, how do you break shoes? My brain isn't working today!

Amps...Hydrate girl! I'm a bean lover too!

Judy...I hope your hamstring is feeling better!

Liz...Hope you enjoyed your rest day yesterday!

Debra...Sorry to hear about your shoddy run. Hope you are resting some girl! I hope you enjoyed your ice cream. My DH is a pralines and cream kinda guy. He's pretty nutty too! lol!

Amy...yum. Pizza! My weakness. I love some cheese pizza. Or...Domino's ham and pineapple. I like Domino's the best. If we eat some place else...Cheese it is! I'm glad to hear you were feeling good yesterday. Sounds like a lot of core work!!! Hope you are doing ok today.

Mel, I know your idea has been a desire of yours and others for quite some time. Whatever we as a group decide and wherever it evolves, I would want to see things free form so that any and everyone would feel at ease to be part of our wonderful group. I know we all want to keep WISH the fantastic place we have come to know and love and maybe we are at the point to make it even better.

First step, we need a plan, where we want the team to be in 3, 5, 10, even 20 years and beyond. Then we'll likely need an 'executive committee' to start figuring out what to implement and how. I have a lot of this in my head on what things to do and in what phases but would like team input on feasibility and what everyone else would like to see happen. I think we can do this online, via email, phone, etc then use marathon and other event weekends to meet in person as needed.

At minimum, we should address what things to do as we grow. I think planning for a coaching/mentoring structure for 2010 marathon weekend would be the first thing to try that wouldn't be too much to do all at once. I'd like to chat with folks like Cecilia, Monica, Angie, etc who have run/walked for charity organizations for an idea on how their organizations handle the coaching aspect and how we could translate that to an electronic format.

I would not want to change the flavor of the WISH team in anyway, that would be a priority.

I like your ideas Mel! :thumbsup2 I am w/ Dave in that the great thing about WISH is that it's place anyone can come and feel welcome. A place to try to better ourselves and get support from others that understand and have been where we are. There is no pressure to raise any money for any charity or or organization or anything like that.

I see the big difference between TnT and WISH is WISH is something you can be part of without having to raise money for anything. But you get the same benefits of good information and membership in a nurturing group.

It will be intersting to see where all this goes.

Is this the "weekly thread" where one can officially join the W.I.S.H team?? I'm so confused. lol sorry! anyway, I posted about a week ago that I was thinking of running in the half marathon in 09, and I can now say that it is going to be a go for me!!! :yay: Here is my plan. First and foremost, I'm planning a disney fairytale wedding for next year! woohooo!! I get a planning session at the six month mark, and January will be that six month mark for us. So I realized if i can get a planning session in January, I can also run in the half marathon! So I talked to my wedding person today and she is confident that we'll be able to get a session around the 10th and she told me to go ahead and sign up for the half! I'm very excited for two reasons. 1. I will get back into running, which I have missed since starting a full time job (being a grown up is not always as fun as it looks!). and 2. I'll get into KILLER shape for the wedding.

Ok, sorry to pirate this thread with wedding stuff, but its running related too. also, I hope this is the place to join WISH. if so I'll post again with an intro of who I am. :)

I guess it really comes down to what you want to be? I feel that it's great that we talk about being a team but until you actually do something as a team you're nothing but a group of individuals all with the same shirt.

But in my eyes I know that we can make a difference so why not do it? Are the downsides to actually putting a line in the sand and saying this is what we stand for that bad that people are saying they don't want to have anything to do with it if we do?

So if we, as a group, decided that we wanted to use "Team W.I.S.H." as a vehicle to raise awareness for something like childhood obesity then that would be a bad thing? Who says we actually have to raise anything? Why don't we just say we're doing the races for whatever reason and if you want to donate to our charity the URL is on our shirt and go right ahead and donate if you feel the need to give.

I think actually having something we stand behind would make it easier for us to create some cohesiveness so that maybe we can go to sponsors like Nike, Asics, Clifbar, Brooks, Gu and others and say "Hey, this is what we're about; These are the events that we're doing and is there anyway you can help us spread our message?". I'd make the phone calls. I'll do the leg work but right now if I was to approach any of those companies they'd just look at me and say "Why? Give me a reason why we should help you at all?" and my response would be "You know..I have no idea but I thought I'd ask anyways"

I'm not quite sure taht you understand WISH team if you can call us a bunch of individuals with the saem shirts. Wow. WISH is really about getting each other to be healthier, getting each other to teh starting lines adn helping each other to th finsh/to achieve their goals. WHile it would be great to take things further, saying we're nto a team now has just offended at least 100 people.

Cosi Bella - Welcome to teh team! SO glad things have worked out for 09! Please feel free ask questions and to tell us about wedding plans. ;) This thread cn be overwhelming at first but the most important part is letting us know how you're doing and if you have questions. DOn't feel the need to keep up with teh rest of our sagas until it's comfortable fro you. Welcome!

'Scuse me?? :lmao:

You people on the other side of the state are C-R-A-Z-Y!

BTW, you now owe my boss a new monitor. Maybe I need to quit drinking Diet Pepsi.

Ya big sissy. :confused3 :rotfl:

Smoking pork? Does ZigZag make papers that big? :rolleyes1 ;)

You should have come over and joined in. It was absolutely wonderful and tasty. A great new fad that more people should take part in. Although it isn't too easy to run afterwards. Your stomach tends to want to relax in a recliner. :lmao:

Bill

I don't remember being invited.

Mel, were you invited?

:confused3 :lmao:

This wasn't an engineer slumber party was it? ;)

Count me in the 100 offended.

Sorry, guys. I know I haven't been around much, but I just felt the need to chime in.

Some of you know my story. I was sick with a potentially fatal heart condition for 9 years and 11 months. My fourth heart surgery was in January 2005 when a "cowboy" doctor did an unprecedented and unprotocol-ed procedure on my heart that took nearly 8 hours and a lot of courage. When I came home, I decided it was time to get healthy. I soon found the WISH boards and found encouragement to begin a healthy eating and fitness program. My first unattainable-but-attained goal was to finish the 2006 1/2 marathon, exactly 1 year and 1 day after that fourth surgery.

My WISH board friends literally completed the job that doctor started -- they helped me turn my life around. It is only because of the community I have found here and the comaraderie we share all year and at races that I have stayed on task and completed so many endeavors I would never have begun, including finishing the WDW Full Marathon twice.

We are not a bunch of people with the same shirts. I really do resent that. We are a family. Pretty darn welcoming, too, if I do say so myself. I don't know whether you have been around here, providing support or availing yourself of the support and encouragement that is to be found. If not, I feel sorry for you. You don't even know what you are missing. I hope you will spend some time here and really find out what we are about. The fact that this group has grown exponentially in the 3 years and 3 months I've been here tells me we are serving the needs of the many. We may all come and go depending on the other commitments in our lives, but I'd bet almost every person who posts regularly on the WISH events/competition part of this forum can name 5 WISH team members that they know they can turn to at any given moment for advice and encouragement and kudos. I consider WISH a true blessing in my life. It has provided more for me than I can ever tell you and a hell of a lot more than the 4 WISH shirts, WISH visor, WISH gym bag, WISH socks, etc. Oh, and by the way? None of those were an entrepeneurial endeavor. Instead they are the constant reminders in my house, at the gym, at my training course that I take with me and surround myself with to remind me that our goal is to be inspired and to inspire others to be and stay healthy.

I'm sorry that I offended you because that honestly wasn't my intent but how do you think people outside of W.I.S.H. view the group? Do they say "Wow, that's the group that's working together to do whatever" and we can tell because they wear it on their sleeve (metaphorically) or is that the group that we don't know who they are and what they stand for but they all seem to be wearing the same shirts...What is W.I.S.H.? What do we stand for? If anyone outside of the group can't answer the question then we must be doing something wrong so maybe we all just need to step outside the box and view things from the outside and instead of being offended we might be able to add some insight into things and make them better...

We wear what we stand for on the back of our shirts.
