Wk of Apr 30--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

I'm Back I'm Back I'm Back!!!! I finished my first 5K... Hey I finished my first race EVER! I still have a lot of weight to lose, so this was a major accomplishment!

The 5K was harder than I thought. 1/2 mile into it, there was a strong wind in my face for about a mile. And of course the wind was full of pollen, so now I am feeling sick and coughing a lot!! There ended up being only 28 timed racers... but I did not finish last... I was 2nd to last. There were A LOT of very fast runners, something I will never be, nor want to be. The course started at the YMCA, then headed toward the river trail. Most was paved, but there was about 3/4 mile that was all dirt and gravel trail. It was uneven and bumpy and hard for me to jog on because I was afraid of tripping.

I finished with an average of 12.5 minute miles, so the 5K (3.1 miles) was finished in 39 minutes (and 13 seconds). Hubby and the girls were at the finish line and when I rounded the corner everyone started cheering and I could hear my 5 1/2 year old screaming "GO MOMMY"... it brought tears to my eyes as I crossed the finish line. I DID IT!!!

Jen - WAY TO GO!! I am very proud of you!! 12.5 minute miles is awesome!! Congratulations!

Wow, that's great Jen...12.5 mm is fast! Good going.

Mel, I'm anxious to read your report and I'm hoping that someone will post a picture of the metal.

I was able to ride 8 miles on a stationary bike and walked almost 5 on the tm. Only 8 mths. to go

this is another drive-by post as well...

Lynn-- Awsome job! You should be totally proud of yourself, ESPECIALLY under those conditions! Now study hard-- we need our WISH doc up to speed ;)

Colleen-- what a great idea, I hope your race goes great!

Dave-- I checked out the T-shirt thread and like your idea. I will get back there soon.

I've hardly been running but I've been doing some other killer workouts. I did a 60 minute spin class yesterday set to 80's punk rock. Spinning to the Ramones is a killer workout! :rotfl2:

Works still eating a good 10 or more hours a day :rolleyes2 I just sent Texas Instruments the most hostile email I have ever written. Somebody's going to pay for my blood, sweat and tears.

Tomorrow's Dx and my 5K. Weather should be great. Send :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: hoping that he gets hooked! If he ends the race and says "never again" I might have a harder sell on the WDW half :rotfl2:

I posted more on the Minnie thread but I wanted to come here and say that

I DID START!

I DID FINISH!

I DID NOT FINISH LAST!!!!

While I am very slow compared to most of you, I did manage to pull off a sub 18 min mile pace. That, for me is good. I even managed to jog across the finish line! The bad news - BLISTERS!!! My favorite, tried and usually true shoes and socks gave me blisters! At EOS I was told that they are badges of honor, but ouch, it hurts to walk now!

DH did very well. I'm really proud of him. He went ahead of me and finished at a 13:22 min/mile pace and walked the whole way. I knew he was much faster than me. Now I know how much faster!

I am really tired now. Time for some sleep. Will check back over the weekend.

Good luck to everyone who has races on Sunday!

CONGRATULATIONS JEN!!! :cool1: :thumbsup2 :cool1: That is awesome. The TEAM is all very proud of you. 12.5 min miles is nothing to sneeze at. You're way under the pace requirement for WDW Marathon weekend. WTG!!! Sounds like you had a great experience, and what a great thing for your girls to see!!!

Hi all!

Sorry I haven't been around much. I haven't had much time lately. Also, haven't done much... ahem... ANY... running either. :sad2: I'm so scared to start again. DH and I walked last night and we were both complaining of aches and pains...from slow walking!!! Oh I am so dreading starting up the running thing again. And to freak me out even worse I have a 5k this Saturday in my home town. :scared1: I am so scared about anyone from high school seeing me run. I went to a really preppy school where everyone knows everyone's business and all the girls were stick thin. Running this race is going to be a HUGE obstacle for me mentally and emotionally. Please pray that I have the courage to go through with it!

Dena - How did the run go?

I totally understand how you feel about high school - My high school days weren't the best but that is the past and in the past couple of years my husband and I have bumped into a few people at stores and he couldn't believe that I was the same age as some of these people (they just didn't age well).

Let us know how you made it through the emotions and the race ---I hope it was a positive experience for you.

Dena- I forgot about your 5k at your old high school. I hope it went well too. Let us know how it went.

Jodi and Amy- :wave2: How did your training go for both of you this weekend?

I had my group run yesterday. We did 5.05 miles in 51:14 min or 10:09 mpm pace. My splits were:
Mile 1: 9:51
Mile 2: 9:37
Mile 3: 11:30 (all uphill and some of it really steep)
Mile 4: 9:45
Mile 5: 10:07
I was really happy with the time and the run. That was the farthest I've run in about 10 years. I felt pretty good. I was glad that I had 2 rest days before my run and just did yoga on Friday. I think that gave my legs a break. I had a little soreness in my shins, but it was nothing unbearable.

I really think I need some new shoes. I've been reading online and my shoes are just cushioned with little medial support, and I think that's killing my shins. But I know I'm just being cheap because I just bought my shoes in March and have only run for 2 months in them. Plus, I bought the Garmin and new prescription sunglasses and I'm having trouble thinking I need to shell out another $100+ for a different pair of shoes.

Hope everyone's runs went well. I can't wait to hear about them.

Hey Sunny how did the 5K go? Did your Dx have a good time with the race? Did you happen to mention to him when he finished if he just ran that course a little more than 3 more times he would have run a 1/2 marathon? Hope work slows up for you a little.

Hey Everybody.....just a quick little note to let you all know that I heard form Can and Rhonda. They had a great race...finished at a better pace than the half and are headed for showers and then the spa. They sounded like it was a good time!!

Can't wait to hear how everybody elses races are going. Have a good day!!

We finished the week with 40min on the elliptical and 1 hour of 'The Pump' on Thursday, 55min on the elliptical on Friday, and 40min/4 miles and 45min of Badminton today. For the next three weeks we'll do a bit more running than usual as I intend to do the JPMCCC 3.5miles in Frankfurt in <24min. This means I have to be slightly under 7 minutes per mile.
I also started looking for some 10K races in our vicinity to get prepared for the Race for the Taste. We've never run 10K competetive, and I've never done it under the Florida sun und in that humidity. Our aim is to do the 10K in <50min/7.5mpm, but to do that we must learn to adjust our speed to the distance. Especially I tend to dash off too fast from the startline ;)

I saw a lot of posts on this thread with people talking about shoes, which makes me want to explain our shoe-strategy. DW and I never use the same shoes twice for two consecutive days, to allow the shoes to 'recover'. Both of us have two pairs for ourtdoor running, two pairs for indoor running, and two pairs for crosstraining. For running we prefer Nike Shox, but for outdoors I also have some nice Adidas. For crosstraining (Weights/elliptical/Badminton) we prefer Reeboks. We buy up to four new pairs each year for each of us. Good sportshoes are expensive in Germany, but as we usually travel to Thailand in the spring and to the US in autumn we buy most of our shoes there. Rule of thumb for sportshoes is that they should not be used for more than 200 hours. DW is an orthopedic nurse and so we stick to that rule as we both don't want to become patients of her boss :p
According to our training log of the last five years we work out an average of 250 days per year, which is 400 to 500 hours per year. This means we're 'burning' at least two pairs per person annually. We make a strict distinction between indoor and outdoor shoes as we consider it icky to use outdoor shoes in the gym.
Neither of us had any sport related injuries/ailments for the last five years. We consider this is at least partially due to our 'shoe strategy', but we also do a lot of stretching and pump a lot of iron as a precaution.

Eric- I just wanted to say that the JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge here in Rochester, NY is the same day (June 1st) as the race in Frankfurt. So we'll have at least two WISH TEAM mates running that race on the same day (one in Rochester and one in Frankfurt).

Hey Dave,
that's cool!!! Last time I was at WDW I met several people wearing the 2003 T-Shirt the same day I wore mine - That was fun as we greeted each other.
How many people will participate in Rochester? We plan to exceed the number of 60,000 runners this year, we had slightly more than 58,000 in '05. When I first participated in '95 we were less than 3,000.
Usually our race is mid to end of june, but with the Soccer World Cup starting 06/09 and lasting til 07/09 we have to run earlier this year. We already have daytime temps of 26C/79F, so it could be a 'hot race' ;)

Rode a stationary bike for an hour today and clocked in alittle over 12 miles.I don't know if that's good, or bad, :confused3 but at least I wasn't sitting on the couch watching tv. :goodvibes
