Without telling your age, what is something from your childhood that kids today wouldn't know about?

Having to watch sports live on tv or being out of luck.
Yeah, though I remember it felt like an event when a certain movie was being aired. Today DVD and streaming made us spoiled, but when some popular or rare movie came on TV back in the day, you can be sure other kids you knew from school were all watching too.

And then there's TV Guide and/or the local TV directory to assist you. You get a brief description of a movie to base your decision. While the internet would later give you trailers and screenshots, you also didn't risk having the movie spoiled for you with the printed TV listing.

Speaking of recess ...

kids today wouldn't know that burn from a hot metal slide (or the one rivet that could give you a nice gash.)

After you burned the back of your legs on the slide, you took your chances on injury-go-round. Oops, I meant merry-go-round. 😜

SO many memories! So much rust and hazard risks too!

We should also mark "playing outdoors" as dated.

Has someone mentioned the Great Space Coaster?

If you have, then you'll remember Gary Gnu!

My dad recently passed and we were going through his stuff that he'd collected. He had electric typewriters, projectors, film on reels, even audio tape on reels. But of all those, the one my kids wouldn't understand was the package of Letraset. They were rub-on letters that you'd use to make your project or your slides look professionally done.

dial phones, black and white TV with no remote, 3 channels, no tablets, no computers, no calculator, cameras that use film, girls had to wear dresses or skirts to school, TV Guide, no internet

You can still buy them, and I have some. I use them for temporary building signage, though.

LOL, Maxiesmom, I had to laugh at that one. Remember the tv sets with 3 channels and they turned off at midnight? Well, my Dad controlled the tV, and if there was a football game, basketball game, baseball game, we were also out of luck. Us kids watched Saturday morning cartoons and the Mickey Mouse Club. I always wanted to be Annette, LOL. She sold her teddy bear collections on QVC, and I bought a couple of them. One TB is in a red and white cheerleader outfit. She said she always wanted to be a cheerleader, but couldn
t of course due to her career.

Cars with no seat belts, S&H green stamps, Howdy Doody puppets, lawn darts, real milk shakes that didn't make you burst all the capillaries in your face trying to drink them with a straw, connected were malts. Captain Kangaroo when he had a black jacket with huge pockets, no calculators, going for a ride on summer evenings to get a Frozen Custard (man, I can still taste them), sitting in front of a black and white TV with a single oscillating fan that gave you a flash of "cool" air every few minutes. Party line phones. Gas @ 27 cents per gallon. Road side Carnivals. Everywhere was a smoking section.
Goffyernmost: We must be close to the same age, because I remember all of that! It was such a simpler time, and I do miss it, especially at Christmas. We always made out a list over the year of what we wanted for Christmas , and we had to wait for Christmas to get some of that list, :). Now, my grandkids have everything and don't even ask for anything, so it's some money or gift card!

Going outside and all the kids getting together to play baseball or football - With ZERO parents involved or even watching. Listening to my parents old 78's and laughing at how bad the music was while having them constantly telling me to turn down my rock and roll as it was so bad (we are talking the Beatles).

Blockbuster Video
Tower Records
cartoons only on Saturday mornings and for a couple of hours after school
Electric Company on PBS
Having your mom say, "Come back when the street lights turn on" when you went out to play
When banks didn't have ATMs yet and you had to go inside the bank to withdraw money
Paying for things with checks & having to bring your checkbook with you
When MTV still had music videos
VH-1's Pop Up Videos
When the Simpsons first debuted on TV
Watching "In Living Color" when Jim Carrey & Jamie Foxx were part of the cast
shoulder pads in women's clothing
jelly bracelets
pegging your pants
Z. Cavarricci pants (I'm probably spelling it wrong)
TV without a remote control
TV before cable
Having to get up to switch the cable box from "A" to "B" so you could watch all the other channels
Telephones before cordless phones
Telephones before 'call waiting'
Calling 'Movie Phone' to find out what times the movies were playing, and then imitating the Movie Phone guy's voice in order to make your friends laugh

Party Lines
Garter belts, lol
Half slips
Iron lung
Wringer washer
Rabbit ears
Busy signals
Waiting until after 7pm to make a "long distance" phone call
