WISH'ers walking, running and "other"ing in 2012--General Discussion thread

Wow, what's with the incorrect race distances this weekend...maybe our world is out of wack with all the natural disasters....
My DD called Saturday morning to tell me about her 5K and she had run it in 25 something, but was checking her electronics and it was only coming up to 2.8 miles and then her friend said his said something around 2.87 so, it was a very short 5k??? Guess Maura's race got the difference :confused3

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Hi everyone.

Got back about an hour ago from Xenia and my Half marathon. I left a full Report on the Race Report Thread

The short version is new PR of 2:51:02 on a course that was hiller than I expected. It wasn't really hilly but I was expecting flat after the first couple of miles. That beats my prior PR set at the Columbus Marathon of 3:07:43.

Dad did pretty well with me gone for a few days. Mom was excited to see me when I got back. Not sure how things will go when I'm gone for 10 days this fall for Disneyland.

Yeah for Jeremy :cheer2:
And cutting almost 17 minutes is great
Gotta learn to love those hills :thumbsup2

Go Jeremy!!! :cheer2:

My race this weekend was also great! I cut my half marathon time from 2:44:15 at Disney to 2:36:41 yesterday (less than 3 months later!). It was a really fun race (well, not as fun as Disney but still fun!) and the weather was beautiful. I was a bit cold before the start but it was sunny and nice. We did 2+ laps through Central Park. As you would expect from a spring day in NYC, Central Park was filled with people just going about their business. Gotta love that 7500 runners barely makes an impact! :lmao:

Thanks for the encouragement and support!

Amanda

Great job Amanda. It's great when hard work pays off.

Joan - The hills themselves weren't bad. At least you got a break on the downhills. The problem with this one was a 10 mile straight section (1/2 marathoners did 4 of them) that was slightly uphill. And it was more mental than physical. You look out and as far as the eye could see was this slight uphill. I got to the turn around and started "downhill" and my only thought was "this doesn't feel or look like were going downhill". For me, having some more bends to the trail would have been better to break up the visuals.

I got my first recovery jog in today. I did 3 slow miles. I would have done it earlier but Monday had heavy rain all day and yesterday was a long day at work. I e-mail my time to Run Disney and updated my expected finish to 2:41. I received a pair of e-mails back from then today with the update. I've felt better after this half than the first 2.

I finally sucked it up and order the CD of my marathon pictures...

My wallet is crying.

Last long run of the training plan today....10 miles is done.

Amanda A little late, but great result!

Megan I have yet to spend the dough for pictures. Or shadowboxes, or race souvenirs. I think that might end this coming weekend. :)

Diane How was your biike ride?

The Martian Marathon results were adjusted to reflect 13.1 miles and now I have a 1:48:3. So a 2 minute PR and as usual I am saying that "THAT is as fast as it will ever get, and I now I can run halfs for fun". We'll see if that holds.

And I ran in shorts today! Yippee!

Maura

Hello Fellow WISHers...

Jeremy - great job!!

Jackie - so glad you are recovering and able to get outside for some miles I am chomping at the bit!!

Maura - I am so excited for your up and coming Boston race, whoo hoo!!:cool1:
DianeL - hey girl, as a previous and sometimes PF sufferer, I feel for ya!.

AFM - I had my surgery on April 1st. Surgery was around 8am and with no issues. Got home and pretty much rested and iced most of that day. Foot was totally numb for most of that day. Next day I started with the pain meds as feeling started to come back. I have to wear a boot (camwalker) until further notice. I went to the doc for post op on Tuesday and got my dressings/wrappings changed. Took new xrays and I have a lovely pin to hold the metatarsal in a better position. I feel I am recovering well, I got off the pain meds around Wed and switched to Advil and really haven't taken any of that since Friday. Went back to work Thursday half day and all day Friday.
I am decided to take my sorry butt out to walk with the boot. So I have done a few 1 mile walks with that darn HEAVY thing (it weighs 2lbs.)
I am still icing, but swelling isn't a big concern unless I am on my foot most of the day (like at work). The doc was great and called me the next day to see how I was doing. He told me Tuesday that I was looking good to start that whole marathon training thing that I have been talking about. :lovestruc
Soooooo..... I did it!!:scared1: I hit that submit button and I am OFFCIALLY signed up for my first FULL marathon at WDW 2012!! I know with all you guys support I will get through the training and the race itself.
Take care everyone and keep on keeping on!!

Tracy

Maura*yawn* I'm tired! I hit the snooze this morning and laid there praying for thunder :lmao: Whenever I do these mornings I ask myself if I've lost my mind and if getting faster really is all that important :lmao:

This mornings ride went well. I tried to ride in capri length tights and was told I might want to rethink that. Thankfully I'm used to MI weather and had packed in case of that so had some baggy jeans in the car to toss on over the tights. Plus with the chance of rain I had clothes for after just in case of a drenching.

I opted for the jacket and tech shirts. So was comfy and sometimes cold. wish I had brought something to cover my ears. My tech hoody has those built in mittens and I kept meaning to pull them over my gloves especially on the return as the wind was in my face. We hit the fog on the return. It was a lovely ride and the only thing I wish I could have changed was some money in pocket when we rode by a restaurant and I smelled breakfast cooking.

13.86 miles with I think the garmin said 8.2 mph avg. Which is what I did last night too. Could have gone faster probably. Did some coasting and chatting. Quite happy with my 2nd long (for now!) ride.

My foot did fine. Was getting a bit cranky before I got home but after the ride I went to a cooking demo and then walked a bit. spending the rest of the day with my feet up :thumbsup2

Dr appt tomorrow evening. It's not hurting much today. Just got cranky when I did a bit too much with standing on it. So I think I will do the elliptical again this week and now toss in some longer rides.

Tracy I noticed that we could do a 3 leg. Course the moment you pull out the camera we'd be lost LOL I'm just not that coordinated. In fact everytme I tried to look at the birds or rabbits this morning I almost went off the trail :scared1: Thank goodness I wore a helmet ;)

mla even though the wallet is crying you will love the photos :thumbsup2 Enjoy reliving your happy day!!!! and may you have more happy finishlines to celebrate :cheer2:

Jeremy "You look out and as far as the eye could see was this slight uphill." UGH!!! Wince. Glad your recovery run went well. :thumbsup2

Amanda Congrats!!!! That is an awesome shaving of the time!!! Woohoo a new PR for Amanda!!!! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:BOSTON RUNNERS!!! 1 WEEK till you ROCK THE COURSE!!!! WOOHOO!!! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

Now I'm off to snooze :woohoo: I can't stop yawning. Late night. Waaaay to early morning. snore ;)

Hi,

I've been haunting this board for about nine months now. I finally created a profile in Dec. 2010 and posted my first question earlier this month. Then I realized I had not officially posted on the main thread to join the WISH team.

So, here it goes -
I love it here! It's so informative, interesting and just plain entertaining. I have been a fitness runner for about 25 years, but didn't start racing until about five year ago. I did my first marathon in January - WDW of course. And I recently registered for the 2012 Goofy.

Looking Forward to Time Spent on the WISH Forum,

Hi All

MLA - Race pictures are real expensive. I've never bought one "yet". But if I get good pictures at Disneyland?

Maura - Yea for shorts. Around here we've been alternating between shorts weather and jacket weather. Good Luck Monday.

Tracy - Glad to hear the surgery went well. Hope you finish recovering quickly and can start training for the Marathon.

Diane - Good to hear the bike ride went well.

Cami - Welcome to the group.

AFM - I went out Saturday and did 4 miles after work. I tried upping my run/walk ratio. I felt pretty good. Sunday morning though, I woke up with a pain in my knee. I don't know if it was from the running or I slept on it wrong. I decided to take a few days off for the knee to get better. So, nothing until today when I did 3 miles. Right now, I feel pretty good.

It's almost here...Maura and Cindy will be running the Boston Marathon! :cool1:

Wishing you both all the best for a great run!

Go girls! :cheer2:

Thanks, Joan. Heading out early tomorrow to drive the 750 miles to my Mom's. Why am I not nervous yet? Or had any race nightmares? Probably still un-believing.

Maura

Well, looks like I will be derailed for a bit. Having arthroscopic knee surgery Tuesday April 26th for plica syndrome. Hope it is going to heal quickly. I have events planned and steps to take!

Hope everyone is doing well with training.

Lily Good luck on th surgery. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

So I think I'm going to register for Boston again (or try--they've changed the procedures and we'll see if I can get in). This means I won't do Goofy this year. BUt I'd like to go to WDW for Marathon weekend and run a half as training. What I need is a partner for the marathon relay--seems like it would be fun to have a Chip/Dale medal versus another Donald. But there's no one I can think of at the moment to do it with me.

Otherwise, enjoyed a nice bike ride today and it's sunny and pleasant outside. Yeah

Maura

Before leaving for the holiday weekend, I signed up for the WDW full (took advantage of the Visa discount). It will be my first. DD wants to run it, but doesn't think she will have time to train properly..it will be her senior year at college. Well, Maura posts that she wants a partner to do the marathon relay and that gave me the idea that my DD and her brother could do the relay and get the new medal. He will be a freshman in college and I don't think he would want to take the time to train for a full with all the new experiences at college. Thanks to Maura who gave me the idea and didn't even know it! :thumbsup2

Wow, suddenly the weather got really warm. Hope everyone is getting in those run/walks and x-training.

Cami A belated welcome! Always interested in hearing from a new person--what's your next race?

Jeremy How's your knee doing?

Joan WTG for making it a family affair. My DD is starting her new job in November, and may not have time for even a weekend vacation, otherwise I would love to have done it with her (plus, she's fast!).

Easing my way back into running. Did 5.5 on Sunday--which was plenty--and 4 today. Legs are still a little on the tired side as evidenced by the challenge yoga has been! I figure I have another week or so before I figure out what to train for next. Since I may be visiting my daughter in Germany in the fall, I'm looking at doing the Cologne Half Marathon.

Maura

I took a bit more of a break after my last half marathon than I intended. Between work insanity and the kids being on Spring Break (and a short trip to Baltimore's Inner Harbor), I got a little derailed.
Today I re-booted my training with a lovely 3 mile run outdoors. It felt great! I also signed up for an October 1/2 marathon to keep my motivation up.

Amanda

Hi all.

Amanda - It's easy to do after a race. While I didn't drop clear off, I dropped way back after my half marathon.

Maura - Glad to hear recovery from Boston is going well. And excited to hear your going to try again to register. Hopefully there will still be slots open when your window opens up.

Joan - Good luck training for the WDW full marathon. If your kids are agreeable, I think the relay sounds like a neat idea.

Lily - Hope the surgury was sucessful. And you recover quickly.

I've somewhat decided the knee is not directly running related. For the most part it's been feeling good. I only had the 1 bad day. Although it occationally will get a little bit stiff if it remains inactive for a while. Like after my hour ride home from work.

Training has been going well. I'm getting back on track with my 3 runs a week. I'm currently training for a goal 5K on June 10th before transitions to training for the Disneyland half.

For the past couple of months I've been trying to shakeup my routine to attempt to break through some primarily psychological barriers. In training for my October half last year I got real good at doing run 1:00/walk something. I did the October half run 1:00/walk 2:00, and April 3rd's half was run 1:00/walk 1:00 even though I've been working on running more. Run 1:00 ish, is what feels good. So, I've been trying to avoid run 1:00 and try other things.

Apr 15 - run :30/walk :30 after warmup 3 miles total.

Apr 18 - Started out doing speedwork Ended up doing 2x400 then a 1 mile time trial (galloway magic mile).

April 20 - 1/2 mile warmup with a couple :30 run intervals. Run 1 mile no walking. 2.5 miles run :45/walk :45

April 23 5 miles run :45/walk 1:00

April 25 1/2mile warmup 1 mile tempo interval run 2:00/Walk 1:00, 1/2 mile recovery (with couple of short runs), 1 mile tempo interval run 1:20/Walk :40, 1/2 mile recovery, Slow run :30/walk :45.

Tomorrow will probably be similar to Apr 20th but 1.25mi no walking in the middle.

I'm coming up on a bit of a milestone. I don't have an exact date, but It was sometime Mid May 2 years ago I started getting serious about Distance training Approximately 1 year as a walker and now I year Walk/run.

A year ago Thursday, April 28 was my first walk with my Garmin. In the past year I've walked/ran 620miles, and it's taken me 161.5 hours to do it. My average pace in May was a 15:48 mile (Including walking a half marathon at a 16:00 pace). My average this Month has been 13:47 (including run/walking a half marathon at a 13:00 pace). Unfortunately I don't have any data from my first year as a walker (all I did was cross off days on copies of my training schedule).

My One PSA in this is if you don't keep a log. Start one. Especially starting out, being able to look back and see where I've come in the past year has been good. When you realize that lousy run yesterday, would have been cause for celebration 6 months ago.

Boy this got a whole lot longer than I had anticipated.
