QOTD Tuesday, 6/10/14: What healthy ways do you start your day? It could be something from the list or something else. :goodvibes

BBL with replies and my own answer.

The morning is hard for me as I work nights, usually until about 1:30 a.m., and then I stay up reading or watching TV for another hour. But I still have to get up at around 6:30 to drive DH to work/DD to school. So I have noticed that if I exercise first thing in the morning when I get up and get it out of the way, then I can be a little more relaxed the rest of the day and not worry about fitting it in somewhere. Whatever works!

Hope everyone is having a great day! Love all the colors from the first week's weigh in! :cheer2:

Here is my PSA for today: take a good look at all the stuff that you have and ask yourself if you really need it all. :hippie: I am moving my mom's house and it is a big job for one person dealing with 50 years worth of stuff. :sad2:

Happy Sunday and I will be back tomorrow with the QOTD! :goodvibes

We are sort of going through the same thing with my great aunt. She is 96 and in assisted living so we have cleaned as much as we can out of her house. I think my grandma and great uncle are going to hire a company to buy the house and remaining contents. They will auction everything off. We thought about a garage sale (especially for my grandma's house) but there is just too much stuff to deal with. It's too time consuming for us since we (my mom, aunt, sister, me) all work and I still have younger kids. Good luck!

Evening all and HAPPY Sunday! Hope it was a delightful one for EVERYONE! It was GORGEOUS here, but I didn't get to enjoy it too much, as I had to get ready for the busy work week ahead. I hit Target, Costco, and the market to prepare for the week..... I'm doing a 4 day juice fast (well, if I can make it that far... never done more than 3 days), so I had to buy lots of produce, but I've only washed/prepped enough for the next 24 hours so far. I will do it a half a day at a time. So every morning I'll make my breakfast juice and my lunch juice and any snack juices. Then when I get home I'll do my dinner juice. So I have the veggies washed and peeled and prepped for all of tomorrow's juices and all of Tuesday's juices, since I will be working double jobs on Tuesday.

Anyone heard/seen the buzz on Pinterest about "cauliflower fried rice"? I tried it tonight and it was DELICIOUS!! DS and DH both gobbled it up! They both knew it wasn't real rice, but that didn't even phase them! WOOHOO! A new healthy recipe that was a WINNER!! Other than using the "cauliflower rice", I used the same fried rice recipe I've used for a few years now (because we really like it).

Okay..... time to get buzzing along here! Laundry needs to be moved along and I need to hit the shower! I'll try to pop on in the morning before heading to work....................P

1. What kind of juicer do you have? Do you like it? We are thinking of getting one but there's so many!

2. I did see the cauliflower fried rice! Glad you enjoyed it! I just pinned a bunch of stuff for the movie Fed Up. I told DSs we are going to try a sugar free 10 day challenge this summer. They weren't totally opposed to it, but DS11 said "that's going to be a lot of salads" :lmao:

QOTD Monday June 9, 2014: Did any of these speeches inspire you? Do you have another favorite way to motivate yourself?

BRB with replies :flower3:

Thanks for the video. That was fun to watch! I get inspired when I read fitness type magazines or check on Pinterest for healthy ideas.

At least I have gotten started with biking to work again. So, now I need to add more exercise. However in 95 degrees I don't feel like going outside for a run. I guess I need to pack my swim suit tomorrow to go for a swim after work. I guess I better pack my bag right now after I finished this post.

Yikes! 95 is a scorcher! I wouldn't want to run in that either. Do you have a community pool or a club (membership) pool?

I just wanted to let you know in case anyone is interested that I started my trip report:

I have finally started the cruise trip report, to be found here:

If You See It: Eat It! – Via Panama to Disneyland

Yes, the title does not go at all with the topic of this thread!! But there is a reason for it!!

Yay! I will be checking this out later. Thanks for sharing.

WELL SAID!! Back on track is GREAT!! Good for you!

**********************

Evening all! This juicing is getting old QUICKLY this time. :confused3 Not sure why. Even with all of the prepping I did last night, I still had to prep ALL of my produce for tomorrow AND for most of Wednesday, since Tuesday is my double-work day. It took me well over an hour.... plus then I still had to actually JUICE the produce for my dinner tonight. :rolleyes2

Tonight's juice you ask?? I can't even REMEMBER everything.... but it was mostly what I had earlier today (minus the kiwi and papaya) plus one orange, broccoli, bok choy, and ginger. I also made about half of tonight's into a mock smoothie with a bit of unsweetened almond milk, some cinnamon, and a bit of vanilla tonight. It definitely helped add some variety. It was my first time juicing broccoli and it yielded a surprising amount of liquid.

I"m feeling a bit headachy and I'm afraid it may be due to hunger. Tonight's dinner was two large mason jars, each about 3/4 full. I tried to drink it really slowly, but it was gone in well under an hour and I am still hungry. Time for a cup of tea and to get away from the kitchen.

Working again tomorrow... I'll pop on when I can!..................P

Oh no! Hope the headache is better. I know when I tried a clean eating/no sugar type 3 day cleanse I had a terrible headache. It got better each day. I think it was my body reacting to not having added sugars. Hope your juicing today is yummy!

It was 111 here yesterday but I am making good progress. A big bobcat was right outside the back door last night. :cool2:

BRB with the QOTD.

111? Nope. I would just chill in the AC :rotfl:

BBL with replies and my own answer.

I always start my day with a peaceful breakfast. I usually take it to work and eat at my desk before the student show up. I try to eat something healthy to start my day of right.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, I'm all caught! I took my dog for a walk with my sister this morning and then I decided she needed a bath. The dog, not my sister :lmao: So, I took her to a pet store to use their dog wash and I think I got just as wet!
I have to run, though. DS11's teacher invited parents for a reception to show off the biographies the class wrote. I have to leave at 1:00 for that so I need to go get ready. I'll have to check in later and read Magdalene's trip report :) Have a great day!
Well I eat breakfast everyday - LOVE BREAKFAST sometimes I eat it more then once a day LOL.. I do sometimes have veggies with breakfast (in my eggs) I take a multi vitiamin but at night because it doesn't do well with my morning Meds. so I normally have a full glass of water with said Meds..
I forgot to send in my weight this week! I am down 2.7, so I did PM Magdeline. I am trending downward, which is good. PT is going OK, they are working on helping me with my range of motion since I've gotten all the strengthening exercises down. Running is tough in the heat, but I am managing. I did add in swimming, which has been much better. :thumbsup2
QOTD Tuesday I try to have an egg for breakfast since it helps me stay full until lunch. I saw the suggestion to add in some veggies, so I will be doing that too. :thumbsup2
Magdeline Yay, a trip report! I can't wait to read it. I've never been on a cruise before. The Disney ones sound quite fun!
I hope everyone is having a good month! We can do it!
Hi everyone! I'm Gretchen, and this is my second go-round at both WISH and Weight Watchers. I last joined in summer 2011 and managed to lose about 20 pounds, which is still nowhere near where I need to be. I'm now at my heaviest weight ever and my eventual goal is be down around 160. I just re-joined WW tonight and am going grocery shopping tomorrow. Also considering joining the local YMCA to take part in Zumba, Aqua Zumba, and Step Classes. Hoping this time I can make it stick!
Hello all. Just a quick fly by before I head off to bed...
Doing well with eating but still not getting to the gym because of work. Sticking with my walking goals as set with the Breeze app on my phone.
And, on a slightly different note, I ordered my Plexus business cards today!! The products are still working great for me and I'm really excited to get the business side of it off the ground.
You know, if I was only using the products, I'd probably be sharing every little detail of my experience with them. But, since I did sign up as an ambassador, I'm more tentative about sharing too much about it here because of the DIS rules about doing business. I do hope that any of you who do want to know more will PM me. Or... if you'd like to follow me on FB, send me a PM and I'll send you a friend request.
Anyway, I better hit the hay. Sweet dreams. :goodvibes
Morning all! Guess what?? I have the day off!! :cool1: So I will be back after I drop DS at school to chat a bit before I have a productive day here at home!.............P
BREAKFAST! If I start my day off RIGHT, I tend to stay on the right track. Egg whites with veggies is a go-to for me! And I love steel cut oats and plain greek yogurt with berries! No donuts or bagels here! :thumbsup2
Check out my recipe of Change-it-up breakfast bowls if you are looking for something new for breakfast or looking for a way to incorporate more veggies into your morning!
http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=47783954&postcount=127
I also find that if I put exercise in my schedule FIRST THING, it is more likely to get done.
1. What kind of juicer do you have? Do you like it? We are thinking of getting one but there's so many!
I have a Jack Lalane, but I really wouldn't recommend it. I wish I had done more research before I bought mine. There are two kinds of juicers....the kind I have that shreds the produce and forces it through a mesh strainer. There is also the masticating type that squeezes the juice out. Apparently the masticating type is the way to go, because it introduces LESS oxygen into the juice, which keeps it from oxidizing quickly and the juice holds it nutrients longer. Plus the masticating type does a MUCH BETTER job juicing greens and gets more juice from ALL types of produce.
With my type, they recommend you juice and drink immediately, but with the other type you can hold it in the fridge 24-48 hours without losing too many nutrients. Breville is the big name in masticating juicers, but unfortunately they run about $300. My juicer was about $85 from a local gourmet shop and I've seen them sold used many times on my FB yard sale groups for $50 and less. I think people buy them thinking that they will use them and then discover, like many other things, that they just sit there and collect dust. I think that ANY juicer is better than NO juicer if you would like to try some juicing, but I do wish I could trade mine in for a better one.
Maybe someone has one you could borrow for a little while? Wish I lived closer, I could loan you mine!!
.
I think my DS would be okay with the idea.... until I got to talking about how much "sugar" there is in things like white flour pizza crusts! Then he might have a change of heart! :rotfl:
Oh no! Hope the headache is better. I know when I tried a clean eating/no sugar type 3 day cleanse I had a terrible headache. It got better each day. I think it was my body reacting to not having added sugars. Hope your juicing today is yummy!
I cut myself a bit of slack today and added a bit more fruit and it was a much sweeter and more enjoyable juice..... plus I am having a HUGE portion for breakfast in the hopes that it keeps me fuller longer. I am planning on just doing three juice meals today, rather than smaller meals and snacks. I will "snack" on green tea between my meals. My colon and liver better be thanking me for this BIG TIME!!:lmao:
Good luck with the business! I hope you do well! It should be easy to sell a product that you really believe in.... especially when you are LIVING PROOF that it works. That is why I can definitely "sell" the WW plan.... I am living proof that it can work. However, I have a harder time selling some of their products because I just don't use them.
**********************
Well.... here I am, home with the whole day to myself!! I don't know what to do first.... laundry?? Dishes?? Vacuuming? The exciting possibilities are never ending!:rotfl2:
Actually the dishes are already done. I washed a bunch by hand this morning because I HATE the new dish detergent I bought. It was supposed to be very environmentally friendly.... which is GREAT except for the fact that it doesn't clean the dishes! I am going to return it and try another type.
The morning juice is made and consumed.... green apple, pear, kiwi, carrot, celery, cucumber, red cabbage, beet, cantaloupe, papaya, orange. No greens, no bok choy, no broccoli, no ginger, and a bit more fruit than usual. Definitely sweeter and a yummier.
The sun is finally making its appearance, so time to put laundry on the clothesline! TTYL....................P
It looks like a typically quiet summertime thread. :goodvibes
I'll volunteer to take the June 16-20 coaching slot if no one else is interested. :thumbsup2
Pamela Yay for a nice productive day at home!
Connie Good luck with your business!
Gretchen Good to see you again! I think last time you were here you were getting ready to do the college program. I'm sure that was an awesome experience.
I have my 2 kids at home for the summer so I am adjusting to the new schedule. Our heat wave is subsiding so I hope to go for a walk this evening. I'll take the kids with me since DH is travelling for work, they could use the activity!
OOOPPSSSS!! My bad. Since I didn't head to work today, I didn't look at the calendar this morning and I was just reminded that I am coaching and should have posted a QOTD today!! SOOOOOO sorry!
Here it is, better late than never........
QOTD for Wednesday, June 11, 2014:
What is your favorite healthy "bring-along" dish that you bring to potluck dinners, bbqs, picnics, etc?
Gretchen Good to see you again! I think last time you were here you were getting ready to do the college program. I'm sure that was an awesome experience.
Thanks for the warm welcome back, ladies! Yes, I was just about to start the college program when I was last here. I worked at Epcot's main entrance through May, and then I stayed in Florida through August as a seasonal CM. At that point, I returned back to Buffalo for grad school. Just finished my second year in doctoral program for clinical audiology, but still taking frequent Disney trips. In fact, last month I made my first voyage out to Disneyland! This summer I'm doing a clinical placement with cochlear implant recipients, which is really cool! :thumbsup2
I stepped on the scale this morning for the first time in AGES. Was expecting it to around 255, and to my surprise, I was at 243.2, so that was a pleasant start to the day (I guess...I mean, being 100 pounds less would be a real pleasant start! :rotfl:) I would eventually like to get down to 140, as apparently that's mid-range for a healthy BMI at my height. My first goal is 231, according to WW.
Went grocery shopping and got enough food for the Simple Start meals to last me through Friday, maybe Saturday. Planning to go for a walk after dinner. Dinner is going to be baked tilapia with garlicky green beans and quinoa, which I've never tried before!
I always seem to be the one that suggests a fruit salad! Frankly, I try to avoid family get togethers at all costs for a variety of reasons, but when my friends and I have cookouts, that's my contribution. And corn on the cob, which we all love too!
Who did your son study for the biography project??
Thanks for all the info on the juicers. DH actually wanted a Jack Lelane one, so I'll look into the other kind. I will probably look on Craigslist for used ones. I think you're right and people get them and don't use them.
The kids had to do a biography on someone they know. DS did my father in law. The teacher had parents come and had all the students standing next to the reports to tell us about them. We could read them ourselves, too. She also had punch and cookies. It was a fun way to end the year by visiting the class one last time.
I usually bring a fruit salad, veggie tray with hummus, or a dip with veggies. If I need something hot, mixed veggies work.
QOTD for Thursday, June 12, 2014:
"If you FAIL to PLAN, you PLAN to FAIL." We've all heard that saying and whether we like it or not, it has a ring of truth to it, especially when it comes to healthy eating and exercise.
Do you plan your meals and exercise? How far in advance? How specific are you in your planning? What kind of a system do you use for your plans?
If you do not plan anything, do you think you would benefit from a plan? What holds you back from planning?
QOTD for Wednesday, June 11, 2014:
What is your favorite healthy "bring-along" dish that you bring to potluck dinners, bbqs, picnics, etc?
Pam, thank you so much for coaching!!
I don't think I have a standard, but most likely it would be a salad. I have done hummus in the past, but that is usually rather high in calories as the recipe I have adds quite a bit of olive oil and tahini. But I have brought carrot salads and greek salads (often I would bring the feta extra as it tends to collect in the bottom of the bowl anyway and different people like more or less feta). I have found that one trick to make a vinaigrette salad dressing lower in calories is to use very little oil, but take the acid away with sugar/honey/maple sirup or even fruit juice. For a greek salad a mixture of lemon juice, honey and a little olive oil works very well!
What a nice surprise to be at 12 pounds less than you feared!! I hope you will get a good start, but it sounds like you are set up for succes right now!
If you do not plan anything, do you think you would benefit from a plan? What holds you back from planning?
I often try to plan, but then have trouble following my plan... Especially with exercise. I really need to get started with the running again, but things happen that make it so easy to not do what I planned.
With regard to food, I have a general plan. I do try to buy stuff for a few meals at a time and then choose what I feel like on that day. But most is rather basic stuff.
I often think I would be better if I planned more, but then I am just not disciplined enough to follow my plans. If I have planned to eat dish A on Monday and then it is Monday and I don't feel like eating dish A, I won't eat it. And then the same might happen on Tuesday and then by Wednesday I have the food from two days in the fridge, about to go bad, so I end up eating all of it because I don't want to throw it out...
Often I also feel a bit overwhelmed with all the work that goes into food planning, especially if I want to try new stuff. I need to research recipes, figure out how to adapt it for a one person portion etc.
But actually, this morning I thought that I really need to try some more serious planning in order to get back into the weight loss mode. I am still struggling with that sooooo much. Or, to be honest, I guess I just need to force myself to start tracking again. That's really more important to me than planning as it is something that helps be to be more disciplined.
Well, here I am in 3rd grade today. It won't be a terribly hard day, but lunch/recess break is very early, so that does make a difference.
I had a pleasant weigh-in this morning (sneak peek) and despite not loving the juice fast, I think it definitely got me started in the right direction again!
I was going to do a full 4 days of juice, but I was miserably, unpleasantly hungry yesterday, so I am "ramping up" to real food again by making my juices into smoothies today. I made all of today's juice last night (I was sick and tired of cleaning the juicer twice a day every day) and for breakfast and lunch I threw the juice in the blender and added power greens (baby kale, baby spinach, and baby ??), half a banana, cinnamon, tumeric (just a bit, it is spicy), fresh ginger, and about a 1/4 C of plain non-fat greek yogurt. I know that the juicing "experts" would tell me that dairy is a bad choice, but I needed something CREAMY with some protein. I can't have nut butters today because I am in a class with a VERY allergic student, so yogurt was my protein of choice today. Fingers crossed that all of this keeps me fuller longer. Plus I held on on starting my morning smoothie until just now.
I didn't leave myself a lot of juice for tonight, so I may add a salad and some whole fruit, depending on how hungry I am.
I may be heading off to some early birthday ADVENTURES this weekend! DD and her fellow research crew worked 15 straight days on their project so now they have 4 days off! I am planning to head down to RI to visit her on Saturday and she wants to take me on adventures! I am so excited! The plan is to visit her on Saturday and then take her along with me to my Mom's on Saturday night. We will stay over and be there to visit with my Dad on Sunday (Father's Day) and DH and DS will join us there so that DD can see her Dad on Sunday! Then DH and DS will head home and I will head back to RI to drop DD at school before driving back to NH so that I can work on Monday. It is a LOT of driving, but I am excited to see my girl!!
Kiddos are coming in, so I'll say good-bye for now! TTYL................P
hi all :wave: trying to get back on the wagon here! summer days are just sooo crazy! been working out good, need to re-commit to MFP...you've heard my song before :teeth:
tried to speed read the last few pages -- :welcome: back Gretchen
Okay, the morning smoothie definitely helped.... plus drinking it a little later helped too. I am not nearly as starving as I have been the last few days. That being said, I am going to nurse my lunch smoothie along for a while and try to make it last until at least noon! And I did bring a small portion of just juice for snack time.
I wore a spring skirt and bare legs today and it is CHILLY here! Definitely does NOT feel like June.
Tonight's dinner was actually yesterday's plan, since I forgot to defrost the pork.... but fortunately tonight's planned meat was fresh and ready to go, so it was easy to flip flop the plans.
I told DS that perhaps he could be our CHEF on Tuesday nights during the summer. DH works at home and I work at WW on Tuesdays (right at dinner time) and while it isn't too big a deal for me to plan crockpot meals for that night, it would be nice for DS to get some life experience in the kitchen (other than frozen pizzas and scrambled eggs :rotfl2: ). He is resisting, but I think I am going to insist, at least occasionally.
Off to chat with DD on FB if she is available...........P
Well, the day is winding down here. Just need to pick up the kiddos from art in 5 minutes and then get them packed up to head home.
The school has organized a fundraising bbq tonight for the family of a student here with leukemia. I didn't sign up for anything initially (I don't tend to take part in any of the "extras" here), but I noticed that they don't have many folks signed up for clean up, so I'll be back here about 6:30 tonight for that. It will feel nice to participate in something a bit more social with these folks I've worked with for so long!
So if I don't make it back on tonight, please forgive me!! I promise to be on in the morning with your Friday QOTD. And don't forget Friday is weigh-in day for this group. If you officially weigh-in on another day, be sure to send in your weight tomorrow to Flossbolna! TTYL................P
Thanks for the warm welcome back, ladies! Yes, I was just about to start the college program when I was last here. I worked at Epcot's main entrance through May, and then I stayed in Florida through August as a seasonal CM. At that point, I returned back to Buffalo for grad school. Just finished my second year in doctoral program for clinical audiology, but still taking frequent Disney trips. In fact, last month I made my first voyage out to Disneyland! This summer I'm doing a clinical placement with cochlear implant recipients, which is really cool! :thumbsup2
I stepped on the scale this morning for the first time in AGES. Was expecting it to around 255, and to my surprise, I was at 243.2, so that was a pleasant start to the day (I guess...I mean, being 100 pounds less would be a real pleasant start! :rotfl:) I would eventually like to get down to 140, as apparently that's mid-range for a healthy BMI at my height. My first goal is 231, according to WW.
Went grocery shopping and got enough food for the Simple Start meals to last me through Friday, maybe Saturday. Planning to go for a walk after dinner. Dinner is going to be baked tilapia with garlicky green beans and quinoa, which I've never tried before!
WOWZA, you certainly are back on track!! Good for you for planning ahead so well!!
I always seem to be the one that suggests a fruit salad! Frankly, I try to avoid family get togethers at all costs for a variety of reasons, but when my friends and I have cookouts, that's my contribution. And corn on the cob, which we all love too!
YUM, YUM!
QOTD for Thursday, June 12, 2014:
"If you FAIL to PLAN, you PLAN to FAIL." We've all heard that saying and whether we like it or not, it has a ring of truth to it, especially when it comes to healthy eating and exercise.
Do you plan your meals and exercise? How far in advance? How specific are you in your planning? What kind of a system do you use for your plans?
If you do not plan anything, do you think you would benefit from a plan? What holds you back from planning?
I am naturally a planner, so this isn't the hardest thing for me. But I definitely had YEARS (when the kids were younger) when dinner wasn't thought much about until 5pm! We ate a LOT of pasta back then because it never needed defrosting! And we have always lived at least 25 miles from a grocery store, so there was never the option of dashing out to grab something at the last minute.
Anyhow, life is better/easier in SO MANY respects when my meals are planned ahead! I eat better and healthier and a greater variety of foods. I save money, I try new recipes more often, and life is more organized and relaxed, especially in the evening. Grocery shopping is easier too!
I had a spurt of a few years when I planned for weeks in advance... sometimes months. Now it is enough to just plan one week in advance. I have a binder full of menu cards that I made up and a plastic holder in the kitchen that I can slide the cards into that shows a full week's menu at a time. I also have two binders of recipes.... "tried and true" and "waiting to be tried". If I try something from the "waiting" book and it is a thumbs-up, the it gets moved to "tried and true". If it was okay, but needs a tweak, I make notes and leave it in "waiting".
I have fallen off of planning wagon as far as exercise goes, but I am hoping to get back on it this summer!
Pam, thank you so much for coaching!!
I don't think I have a standard, but most likely it would be a salad. I have done hummus in the past, but that is usually rather high in calories as the recipe I have adds quite a bit of olive oil and tahini. But I have brought carrot salads and greek salads (often I would bring the feta extra as it tends to collect in the bottom of the bowl anyway and different people like more or less feta). I have found that one trick to make a vinaigrette salad dressing lower in calories is to use very little oil, but take the acid away with sugar/honey/maple sirup or even fruit juice. For a greek salad a mixture of lemon juice, honey and a little olive oil works very well!
I've just recently starting making my own salad dressings and it is easier than I thought! Thanks for the ideas!
I often try to plan, but then have trouble following my plan... Especially with exercise. I really need to get started with the running again, but things happen that make it so easy to not do what I planned.
With regard to food, I have a general plan. I do try to buy stuff for a few meals at a time and then choose what I feel like on that day. But most is rather basic stuff.
I often think I would be better if I planned more, but then I am just not disciplined enough to follow my plans. If I have planned to eat dish A on Monday and then it is Monday and I don't feel like eating dish A, I won't eat it. And then the same might happen on Tuesday and then by Wednesday I have the food from two days in the fridge, about to go bad, so I end up eating all of it because I don't want to throw it out...
Often I also feel a bit overwhelmed with all the work that goes into food planning, especially if I want to try new stuff. I need to research recipes, figure out how to adapt it for a one person portion etc.
But actually, this morning I thought that I really need to try some more serious planning in order to get back into the weight loss mode. I am still struggling with that sooooo much. Or, to be honest, I guess I just need to force myself to start tracking again. That's really more important to me than planning as it is something that helps be to be more disciplined.
Instead of adapting a recipe to feed one, why don't you pack up the extra in individual portions and stash it in the freezer?
WOohoo and welcome back with us!
***************
Evening all! Just a few minutes to say hello before I dash out again to help with the BBQ at school. Fortunately tonight is a crockpot dinner, so the men can feed themselves. But I will be making them a salad to go with dinner. Our bed of greens is growing SO WELL right now, we have plenty to use up!
TTY tomorrow.................P
