WISH Away the Pounds -- Delightful December Challenge -- Everyone Welcome!

Evening all! Wow.... today just flew by. We had the house (mostly) clean by the time the girlfriend showed up. I made everyone lunch, DH went to the gym and ran an errand to Costco. I sold a few things online and packed them up for the P.O. tomorrow. I did some studying/reading for my WW thing tomorrow, but I am NOT feeling prepared. I'll spend another 30+ minutes tonight and some time tomorrow on it.

Made a nice low carb healthy pizza tonight for DH and myself and of course a "real" (:rotfl2: ) pizza for DS and the girlfriend. DH is taking her home now.

We are supposed to get some icky weather overnight, so they are throwing around words like "school delays"... but I don't want DS to get his hopes up.

Off to warm up my tea and do some more "studying". See you all tomorrow!..........P

Oh, the weather outside is frightful but the fire is so delightful . . . :santa:

Most of us in the U.S. just had a big week-end of bad weather -- and it's not even winter yet! The days are so short. Comfort foods are tempting us. It's too cold outside to play. Who wouldn't want to curl up and take a long winter's nap? :confused3

But there are many things you can do to alleviate or prevent the winter blues and stay healthy and happy despite the weather outside. :cool2: Here are five secrets to achieve winter health and energy all season long, courtesy of our friends at sparkpeople.com, of course. ;)

Do everything in your power to avoid getting sick. The number one line of defense is to wash your hands, including under the nails and in between fingers, for at least 20 seconds with warm, soapy water—and to do so frequently. Carry hand sanitizer gels in your car, briefcase and pocketbook for times when you can't wash your hands.

Boost your immune system to keep your defenses high by getting plenty of sleep and drinking lots of water, which will help keep nasal passages hydrated. Eat nourishing, vitamin packed foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, yogurt, and lean protein. Keep up your exercise program and discuss with your doctor whether or not getting a flu shot makes sense for you.
Research has shown that individuals who practice these healthy habits get sick less often.

Maintain and shake up your exercise routine. Exercise has been shown to prevent depression and lift the moods of those feeling down. It also helps keep your immune system working efficiently. Maintaining your exercise routine will offset some of the extra calories from seasonal treats and celebrations as well.

The best way to bust through a plateau and continue to increase your fitness capacity throughout the winter is to change your exercise routine. Winter is the perfect opportunity to try a different type of machine or exercise class at the gym. Borrow DVD's from the library or Netflix, and try a home workout in your cozy living room. If you are really adventurous, embrace the winter and try a cold-weather sport such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or ice-skating. Unless the conditions are icy, excessively windy or cold, there will be many days when you will be able to enjoy outdoor exercise all winter long. Invest in some gloves, a fleece headband, tights and turtlenecks made by the many all-weather sports clothing manufacturers. You just might find a reason to look forward to winter after all.

Enjoy a variety of winter foods. Although summer offers a bounty of fresh fruit and veggies at affordable prices (think melons, berries and tomatoes), many produce items ripen in winter. From hearty root vegetables to bright, sweet citrus fruits, winter produce offers a surprising range of flavors. Winter squashes such as acorn, butternut and spaghetti, are low in calories, high in health-promoting vitamins, and easy to cook. Apples and many citrus fruits such as clementines and grapefruits are often at their sweetest when temperatures are cool. Experiment with vegetables that you may not have tried cooking before, such as beets, broccoli rabe or Brussels sprouts.

Since the cold weather probably has you staying home more, take time to prepare homemade soups or stews. Make some baked apples for a wonderfully nutritious low-calorie dessert or snack that also fills your home with a warm and delightful aroma. If you don't already own one, consider investing in a slow cooker. Throw together a few choice ingredients and you'll be thrilled to come home to a fully-prepared dinner. Lighten up old favorite comfort food recipes, or find new ones.

Think light and bright. Research from the National Institute of Mental Health has found that exposure to bright light in the early morning can be a powerful, fast and effective treatment for seasonal depression. There's no reason to think it wouldn't help those of us who experience the winter blahs! As soon as you wake, turn on bright lights in your home, open the curtains and lift the shades. When participating in outdoor exercise, if possible, do so in the early morning hours—or at least during the day before the sun goes down. If you are lucky enough to own a fireplace, use it often. The warmth from the fire and the flickering light is calming and relaxing. Even if you don't have access to a fireplace, try scented candles and see how it warms up your home and improves your mood.

If you find yourself still feeling unusually blue and lethargic despite your efforts to get enough light, talk to your doctor about your feelings and discuss a trial with light therapy. There is absolutely no reason to feel sad until springtime.

Find your inner child and invite him/her out to play. When we were kids, there was nothing that made us happier than a snowstorm. School would be cancelled, giving us an excuse to sleep in, watch TV for hours, go sledding or build a snowman. My siblings and I would play scrabble, monopoly, and work on jigsaw puzzles—when we weren't outside in the snow.

As adults, a snowstorm can mean lost income, kids or pets tracking snow into our houses, walkways to shovel and, generally, a major hassle. But what if we gave ourselves permission to act like a child again? Instead of fretting over all the problems the winter has caused, why not find the opportunities we may overlook at other times of the year? How about we slow down our crazy life of always needing to be doing something "productive" and engage in some fun and meaningful activities? Put on your boots and gloves, and head out into the snow to build a snowman, have a snowball fight, or make snow angels. Find the board games and puzzles, and enjoy some interactive play. Or, just curl up under your favorite blanket and read a great book as the snowflakes fall outside your window, blanketing the world in a beautiful winter white. The cold can be a great excuse to stay home and relax, find some much needed down time, and enjoy things we don't normally take the time to do—if you choose to view it that way.

With a shift in your mindset, winter does not have to be a time of lethargy, illness or unhappiness. Let it be the season to partake in seasonal pleasures that you get to enjoy, rather than a season that you have to endure.

Which brings me to the QOTD Monday, December 9, 2013: What is your secret to achieving winter health and energy? It could be something from the list or one of your own.

Morning all! My story for today is about one of my loved ones. I KNOW she lurks here on a REGULAR basis, so I thought I'd share a bit about her.

Good luck to DD on her finals this week. I know you will be happy to have her home for break. :love:

I hope very one is having a great weekend! I am horribly busy with things to organise in the new flat, things for Christmas etc. But the first page is updated!!

For those of you who did not have such a great first week: I hope the next two weeks will make up for it!! I think most of us will find the last week of this month the hardest!

Congratulations to the losers, we have some that did quite well! My result looks better on paper than it is really. I had a very high start weight and managed to just get back into my main current range. I have a very low goal for the month - I just need to get under a certain number, that's all I want to achieve! I need to be good, but to be honest, at the moment I find tracking such a hassle and then in the evenings I get those snack attacks! Arg!! And it is not even Christmas yet!!! I am very thankful to be able to host this month as this really helps me to maintain at least a certain level of discipline! I already know that I will host next June again as that is the month after I return from my next vacation!! Hostessing is such a great thing to help focussing on weight loss! :thumbsup2

In that regard: We already have Lisa signed up to be our January hostess and Helen has signed for March already. But there are still lots of spaces available! Think about it and let me know if you are interested in hostessing a month! There is a spreadsheet available (Thanks to Rose!!) which makes it easy to keep tracks of everyones weight loss.

Thanks for the reminder that we need hostesses for the monthly challenges next year. It's a lot of fun! Be brave and think about giving it a try. :flower3:

Also, now that the coaching schedule is set for December, I am taking volunteers for coaching for January. PM me if you are interested. I think I will keep the 5 day coaching slot as that seems to work better for all of us -- shorter commitment for the coach and more variety for the participants. :goodvibes

And a big, WATP thank you to Magdalene for hostessing and organizing us during this busiest of months. :santa: :thanks:

Which brings me to the QOTD Monday, December 9, 2013: What is your secret to achieving winter health and energy? It could be something from the list or one of your own.

My secret to winter health and energy is our fabulous community center where I can keep up my running on the indoor track, swim and do river walk, and take classes or use the equipment. :cool2: I also make sure that I faithfully take my vitamin D every day. It does make me feel better. :sunny: And last, but not least, it helps to have a get away to sunnier climes sometime during the long winter to look forward to. In my case it is the Princess Half Marathon. princess:

Have a happy Monday all! :goodvibes

QOTD:

Very fitting as I woke up this morning wondering whether I might start getting a head cold... Luckily I am feeling much better now!

The first of my two most important things to help me get through the winter is my light-up-alarm-clock. It is a light that slowly becomes lighter over the course of 15 minutes and when it is really light it starts with a sound. Makes waking up so much easier when it is still dark outside in the mornings.

The other thing is the most simple thing: Handwashing! When there was the swine flu scare (not just a scare, my brother in law got it and was sick for 6 weeks as he managed to get pneumonia on top of it) I started to be really good about it. And that was the winter when I was the least troubled with anything. So, thanks for the reminder that I really need to become good about this again!!

Continuing to workout on a regular basis, eating healthy, and getting PLENTY of sleep are my big keys. Working in the school system, I am exposed to SO MUCH but my immune system is pretty good. I usually average one sinus infection every winter/spring and maybe a short cold. Knock on wood, its been a few years since I've been really miserably sick.

Good luck to DD on her finals this week. I know you will be happy to have her home for break. :love:

She is going a bit crazy right now, but today is her LAST DAY of regular classes.... she has a free day tomorrow and Wednesday is called "reading day" at her school... basically it is finals prep day. She has two finals Thursday, two on Friday, and a paper due Monday.... and that is it! She also has her RA application for next year due on Monday. UnbeLIEVABLE how fast her first semester of college has gone by! And YES, I will LOVE having her home for a while!!

SECONDING that WOOHOO and THANK YOU!!

Good luck with you certification today, Pamela! You can do it! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

And I don't HAVE TO! We got cancelled today due to the weather!! :cool1: While I am anxious to get it done and over with, I cannot TELL YOU how delighted I am to have another week to prep for this!! I know I'll NEVER feel completely ready, but another week is very welcome!! But thanks so much for your confidence in me!!

I'm so envious of your winter get-away.... but not envious of all of the training involved in getting ready for the run!

How could I forget good old-fashioned handwashing?? I cannot tell you how many times during the school day I wash my hands! They are old-looking and dried out and cracked and ugly.... but at least I stay healthier!:lmao:

************************

Morning all! Waking up to a winter scene outside today. My WW certification class has been cancelled and I am not at ALL disappointed! DS had school as usual though... no delay or cancellation there.

I've given myself a bit of a break this morning and spent some time doing some online shopping and creeping around FB and the Dis Budget Board. Next up is bedmaking and laundry and maybe I'll even pull out the Christmas stuff and get a bit of decorating done. I know that DD wants to help with the majority of it though, so I'll just do a bit. And maybe a bit of wrapping? But FIRST I must make/sign/mail 6 slightly overdue sympathy cards! That needs to be my priority today.

Breakfast was yummy and warm, but I'm ready for my mid-morning fruit break.... mmmmm.. grapefruit today! TTYL.................P

Seeing as though I am around germy students all day, I am an avid hand washer and hand sanitizer user. I am also trying to eat more fruits and veggies through the winter instead of comfort foods. Winter is also a great time for me at the gym (when I can get there). I try new equipment and usually like it. I've added the rowing machine and arc trainer to my routine now. It also helps that I have a super active dog that loves snow. Her owner does not love cold and snow, but I sacrifice and try to get her out for long walks or outside playtime as much as we can.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good evening. I started this post an hour ago and then DS7 wanted to play on a website that they used in technology class today, so I let him on. It was a great site for math practice, so how could I say no?
Anyhow, now it's time to pack lunches for tomorrow, get my stuff organized for work, and try to get this load of laundry put away before the kids head to bed in about 30 minutes. Sorry that I haven't had much time to chit chat. I should be better after tomorrow. I should be able to check in during my lunch break. My afternoons are pretty full this week, so I'll try my best to get here.
Hope everyone is doing okay after all the terrible weather! This is actually one storm we didn't see and I'm fine with that. Stay warm and stay safe :)
Well guys, sorry I have been MIA... And I missed weigh in! Geesh! I did have a slight loss this week, unfortunately I had lost that weight right after I weighed in last week... so basically I have stayed the same for about a week. What can I expect though? I was busy busy busy last week and didn't even excercise ONE TIME :scared1: It was my daughter's 7th bday, we had a small gathering with family on Mon 12/2 (her bday) with cake... then a party with friends on Sat 12/7 (we went and saw Frozen in 3D, GREAT movie!) with popcorn AND cake... celebrated St. Nick's day on 12/6 (traditionally St. Nicholas' day celebrated like Christmas in some parts of Europe, but in my family we have always celebrated this as the day St. Nick comes to pick up you letter and fills your stocking) with candy... and decorated the Christmas tree on Sun 12/7 with hot chocolate and candy (again)!! well no wonder, huh? Anyway, back on track today and went to zumba tonight. But boy it is cold! I think we here out west are getting a taste of east coast winter! Only 50 out today and down to 30 tonight! Brrr... Be glad when we get back up to 70 later this week! Anyway, I hope everyone is having a good month so far and getting ready for the holidays!
Good morning all! :goodvibes
This is my final day of coaching so I thought I would do a fun QOTD.
QOTD Tuesday, December 10, 2013: You're on the nice list this year and Santa will bring you something for your efforts. But there is a catch (isn't there always?). It has to be only for YOU, not your family or your kids, it can't be something like peace on earth, or a big bank balance. Something tangible and frivolous just for you! What are you going to ask Santa to bring you? :santa:
The necessary time off and entry fees to every single runDisney race! :cool1: (It's good to dream. :cloud9:) Oh! and knees that no longer hurt!! :headache:
Don't feel bad Amanda, I missed weigh in too. Doesn't matter as I didn't lose so much as an ounce. :eek: Better get the dupa :yay: again!!!
I stumbled across this challenge and thought it would be fun to unofficially try it (it's already 2/3 over). It's called the Elf for Health Challenge and includes something different every day. So until 12/22, see how much you can do:
12/12: take some YOU-time
12/13: walk/run/elliptical or whatever your fastest mile
12/14: closet cleanout day
12/15: plan your meals for the week
12/16: mediate
12/17: wall sit as long as you can
12/18: share your expertise and teach someone something
12/19: eat at least 3 different food groups at each meal today
12/20: list 6 things you love about yourself - 3 physical, 3 non-physical
12/21: set a new fitness goal
12/22: make a donation to your favorite charity
I think it will be fun to try this for the rest of the month. I just started Monday by paying it forward and making a donation to one of our local schools. I went to DonorsChoose.org and found a local school that was looking to purchase some kind of special camera. Later that day, I got a sweet note from the teacher thanking me for my donation. :grouphug:
Today is all about the healthy snack. Looks like carrots for me! :goodvibes
Oh heavens....I can't even THINK of anything! How pathetic! How about a WDW Annual pass PLUS 24 roundtrip airline tickets! That way I could go to WDW once a month for a year AND take someone with me every time!! Who wants to be first?? :laughing:
If that's not possible, then I'll follow Lisa's lead and ask for a new car!! How about a nice fancy Land Rover?? :thumbsup2
Lisa, thank you for coaching!! And a big welcome to Pam to be our new coach for the next 5 days!!
Yesterday's QOTD:
Since it has to be tangible (so it can't be a 5-week trip to Hawaii) I will go for a new bike. I have set my eyes on one that two of my friends have:
http://velotraum.de/modelle/cross-7005-ex-td
It is called "Velotraum" which means more or less "biking dream" and is really light and comes in any colour you wish. I am thinking about going for bright pink! It is horribly expensive though...
Today has been a horrible day eating wise. Need to have a healthy dinner. Somehow I am really struggling this month and keep sabotaging myself. I am so glad to have this thread as I know otherwise things would be even worse...
Ah, and I see thta today's qotd is up as well.
I always wanted to try getting a massage (a real one, not just a head of foot massage)
I always wanted to try quail.
