I was just listening to Mike Tirico talk with Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir. I think Weir hit the nail on the head when explaining what could've happened with Ilia. Weir said that it happens... a skater misses/mucks up a move and starts thinking about how many points might've been lost and where can he put in something to earn them back. This splits your focus. Skaters need to learn to prepare for this, and if it's not happened to you before, it can really mess you up on the ice. Seems to make sense; when was the last time Ilia was behind, or made a mistake?
Poor kid, I feel really badly for him, but what a class act, when he congratulated the winner. Ilia looked like he was genuinely congratulating the guy and not just going thru the motions, waiting to be off camera for some privacy.
