Winter Olympics No Video Thread

He did for every performance before this one - I mean, since the last Olympics, he's won every Worlds by margins unheard of...and every Grand Prix final...and every US nationals...and hadn't lose since 2023 to anyone...
And I think his response to his first loss makes him a winner. :thumbsup2
And I was rooting for the Canadian guy. Lol.

I’m reminded of 1988 in Calgary. Then Debbi Thomas of the US was the reigning World Champion, was the favorite, was expected to win gold, was the leader after the short program, but had several stumbles in the long program. She was able to salvage the bronze, however.

Currently watching a replay of today's US/Canada men's curling game on CNBC, and there is an annoying jerk in the audience that keeps blasting an air horn. Are these things not banned for indoor sports?? Hopefully s/he doesn't have tickets for any more games.

I jinxed figure skating. First major controversy in over a decade (also in ice dance but to the benefit of an American team). Looking at the detailed results, its the French team that have an element that was scored very widely. From 0 to 4.

Highest and lowest grading are removed. So one judge shouldn't be able to impact results drastically. All they would be doing is giving scores that shouldn't count in the end.

That being said, I think there needs to be a great degree of penalty for falls, missed elements and poor execution. The French team had a mistake, the Americans didn't. But because the French pair's program was considered 'more difficult' it didn't impact the overall results. And in the men's, there really shouldn't be a scenario that a skater can single a quad and repeat an element and still be able to win gold if they hadn't had further mistakes. Some rebalance needs to happen so we don't just get programs that are filled with the most difficult elements performed poorly (sometimes) winning.

Also in ice dance for the second part of the score too much depends on reputation. There seems to be a hierarchy to those scores. Cizeron looks like he partnered with middling skater and turned her into a Tessa or Gabriella; all the judges are more generous with those scores.

I was just listening to Mike Tirico talk with Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir. I think Weir hit the nail on the head when explaining what could've happened with Ilia. Weir said that it happens... a skater misses/mucks up a move and starts thinking about how many points might've been lost and where can he put in something to earn them back. This splits your focus. Skaters need to learn to prepare for this, and if it's not happened to you before, it can really mess you up on the ice. Seems to make sense; when was the last time Ilia was behind, or made a mistake?

Poor kid, I feel really badly for him, but what a class act, when he congratulated the winner. Ilia looked like he was genuinely congratulating the guy and not just going thru the motions, waiting to be off camera for some privacy.
