Wine and Dine 2015

Did anyone else notice the part about BEARS?!?!
At least there are only black bears (which eat berries, not people :scared:). The only real risk is in startling one or coming between a momma bear and her cubs. I see them on the trails every once in a while and have learned to just let them know that I am there. They then generally move into the woods and I can run past.

We have puma and lynx here too (though in far fewer numbers), but I have never seen one on a run.

All that said, it is beautiful here and my trail runs are amazing.

This city girl is FREAKING OUT at the thought of bears, lynx and pumas. Where do you live? Because it might have to checked off my list of places to live! (I say this as my husband is trying to convince me to move to central PA when he retires from the military...)

We have bears around here too along with panthers, stray dogs, wild boar, otters, and whatever else that wants to leave the Everglades and the Woods. This is why I end up running inside more as I would have to run in pitch black if I ran in the morning due to the time I get to work and running outside at 5:00PM is often hinder by our thunderstorms and heat and humidity. (I did an outside run last week around 5:30PM and I 'lost' 5 pounds of water weight that quickly returned once I rehydrated)

I make my husband do his runs with his phone on him as he's regularly doing a 10 to 14 mile run a week on his day off. He's running starting around 6:00AM so he still has the chance of encounters. I wish he would carry pepper spray or something but he won't.

I live in a fairly populated area (not a large city, but a city of about 30,000 in the Seacoast area of NH) and we have seen black bears near our house. :) We do not even live particularly out in the boonies. About 2 miles south of downtown. I don't usually run in the direction that I know the bears came from except during the day (we saw them at night time). ;) We also have foxes, coyotes, fisher cats, and moose. :)

Omg this suburban girl is also freaking out about all your animals! Worst thing I've encountered on my runs (other than the dog issue) is deer. Thank goodness because I'm such a wimp!

Got my five miler in this morning (Sunday didnt happen this weekend) and surprisingly it went better than expected. I've been struggling to feel good on my runs lately and have been worried I wouldn't make it through wine and dine. But today was confidence boosting and I just may have finally gotten Past that "beginning...again" phase and have a solid base going now. Feeling relieved.

The electric fences work very well - better than physical fences - but some people don't even do that. Really sad.

My current dog would probably be okay with an electric fence because he's not really a wanderer, but I've had dogs in the past that would blow right through them. The husky we had...it was like he did a cost-benefit analysis and decided taking the shock was worth an hour or two of freedom and watching his humans run all over the neighborhood trying to catch him. Wish I had been into running while we had that dog, he would have been a great running partner. Current dog could out swim me, but gives up pretty quickly on a run.

Moose would scare me, definitely. I know we have coyotes in the area, but I've never seen one alive (just sadly dead by the side of the road). And we did have a black bear wander into town last year, but that's pretty uncommon. Other than errant dogs, I'm probably most concerned about startling a skunk. :scared:

The last 2 weeks have been really busy for me so I slept in this morning and didn't get out to run my 4 miles until almost 9. It was so hot! I ran a little slower but my run felt ok. But when I got home I was trying to cool down and got really dizzy and nauseous. It felt almost like the flu and took me a good half hour to get back to normal. I was in the bathroom with my head between my knees trying not to throw up or pass out! Haven't had that happen before and it makes me a little nervous since it was only a 4 mile run and I have much greater distances to come!

Sounds like you may have had some heat stroke. I've had that happen before when I ran on a hot day and didn't hydrate well enough. I ended up at the gym yesterday doing 6 miles on the treadmill--it was just too hot and humid for me, even when I woke up at 6am.

There are collars with stronger or longer lasting shocks for dogs like that, but I get what you are saying. No single solution works for every dog.

I think I'm going to style my W&D outfit to commemorate my favorite EPCOT activity - Drinking Around the World!
Love it! I'm already rethinking my Remy idea... because I really don't want to run 13.1 holding a wooden spoon and wearing a chef's hat lol! I originally wanted to do a martini theme, so I may revisit that idea...

I have a random question :) I am doing the 5K also and was wondering do they have corrals for that also or how does that work. I looked around but didn't find anything but proof of time not needed for the 5K. Thanks!! On another note it is hot in Arkansas and the treadmill is my friend right now ;)
Yep, they'll have corrals for the 5K, but you won't know what yours is until you get your bib. In theory, they place 5Kers based on the estimated pace entered in registration. In reality, I'm pretty sure they use a dart board. ;)

Please, please, please be careful! That screams of heat-exhaustion and darn-near heat stroke. Really dangerous stuff. I can't stress enough slowing down enough to handle the heat, plus being sure to pre-hydrate and take in electrolytes.

I'm doing the princess 10k in 2016 and my friend and I are considering Wine & Dine for 2016. Talk to me about how the races are different and what we should expect at W&D.
The biggest difference, aside from distance of course, is the Princess 10K is in the morning, while W&D is at night. PHM weekend is very, very female-centric, while W&D is gender-neutral - both feel, to me, very relaxed and non-competitive.

So critters on the run... I live in the most densely populated county in FL, but we have a large coyote population. I've run into them a few times - twice running the golf course behind my house and once on a neighborhood sidewalk. Luckily they're shy and easily scared by people, so they just ran back into the bushes. Still, I don't run before sunrise anymore, since that's when they're most active. We also have rattlesnakes and gators - I see the latter pretty often, as we have a couple living in waterways behind my house.

I did my first run of Week 3 today rather than waiting until tomorrow. It was a little bit humid, but nothing too bad and I couldn't pass up the cloudy/overcast afternoon and the breeze. I'll probably stick with doing the next run on Thursday as scheduled, but I may do Wednesday. I'll see how those days feel. :)

As for the conversation on seeing critters while out, I haven't come across anything myself. Unless you count the dead squirrel I saw by the side of the road today that was surrounded by bees. So gross. My mom though did have an interesting encounter with a deer twice this morning while she was out on a walk. I know we have coyotes in our area as well, but I've only ever seen one in person a couple times.

Another day done. I'm doing my 30 minutes on Monday and Wednesdays, and tonight went really well. My ankles hurt for the first 5 minutes from the 4 miles on Saturday, but after a bit it wore off. Did 1 minute run and 30 minute walk again, no problems breathing or any tiredness at all, I'm surprised! I wasn't sure this walk/run thing was gonna work for me, but it is.

Was wanting to box a bit yesterday but due to circumstances I ended up on my stationary bike and lifted weights for a bit. Didn't want to work my legs yesterday, but oh well.

Obviously since I'm on the treadmill I don't see any creatures! But I'm sure I'd run into a deer or two around here.

Sadly I've been there... It is NOT A fun feeling and it's not always strictly due to heat (alone). It happens to me on long runs (over 2 hours usually) if I don't get enough sodium and electrolytes. Even one the treadmill. After my wine and dine disaster in 2013, I learned that I need to alternate water breaks w powerade (not watered down) and I alternate my fuel stops with salt tablets. And if I end up a little shaky after a run for that reason (heat or under electrolyte replacement), I need a salty food ASAP- tortilla chips or pretzels help a lot. I even brought pretzels w me to think although they ended up being too dry to hav more than one or two. Be careful but maybe this will help u if it happens again.

I got up early and did my Tuesday run on my treadmill before work this morning. Best thing about it is that I am done with running for the day already. :) Two solid 15:00 mm's, so I am happy with that. For a change, I didn't even look at my mileage until my time was done. I usually obsess about it, lol. My DD25 is stressing because she hasn't been able to run. She just had major dental surgery from a workman's comp injury (took a baking pan to the face!) and then caught a bug that knocked her out for a week. I think she will be fine. She has been running for years, just not competing. She is using one of Hal Higdon's training plans because she likes to run more than 3 days a week. I know she will leave me in the dust at W&D! We are NOT going to try and stay together! Way too much stress on me. :)

How do you pace yourselves? I was running about a 10:00 mm, but I have picked up speed and would like to run between a 9:40 and a 9:50. So last night, I had more wine than I should have right before a run, and my first mile was a 10:01. So, when my garmin shows me I am being a slow poke (for me), I pick up the pace and run the second at a 9:17, waaaaaay too fast for me. I did the third okay, but then I was too tired to finish the other mile and a half (it didn't help that I got up late and needed to get to work). I didn't have this trouble when I was running a 10 mm, but I am really having trouble pacing myself. Any suggestions?

Not every run should be at the same pace, but on the tempo runs with this pace in mind you might consider shortening your interval on your Garmin. If I want to stay really close to a pace, I set my interval to .25 miles. I know every quarter mile how my pace is tracking. I also have a screen that shows my current pace, but this can fluctuate wildly based on overhead obstructions blocking GPS satellites, so I rarely use it.

This probably isn't all that helpful, but it just takes practice to "feel" what it's like. :confused3 I like @BuckeyeBama suggestion of checking in every 0.25 miles.

Thanks. I will definitely give this a try.

I'm pretty terrible at pacing. I tend to just go by feel, so my pace can be very different depending on a lot of factors--time of day, temperature, what I ate, whether I had caffeine recently, etc. Also, my first mile is always the slowest for my short runs, sometimes as much as 1:40 slower than my "normal" pace. Partly that's because my route is mostly uphill in mile 1, and partly because I am still warming up. I typically pick up the pace significantly in mile 2 without even trying. When I'm on a long run or it is very warm, I will consciously slow down if MapMyRun tells me my last mile was faster than my goal pace, but I don't have a good feel for how an 11 mm feels compared to a 12 mm.
