Wine and Dine 2015

How do you pace yourselves? I was running about a 10:00 mm, but I have picked up speed and would like to run between a 9:40 and a 9:50. So last night, I had more wine than I should have right before a run, and my first mile was a 10:01. So, when my garmin shows me I am being a slow poke (for me), I pick up the pace and run the second at a 9:17, waaaaaay too fast for me. I did the third okay, but then I was too tired to finish the other mile and a half (it didn't help that I got up late and needed to get to work). I didn't have this trouble when I was running a 10 mm, but I am really having trouble pacing myself. Any suggestions?

I second all of the above. For me, i can usually "feel" how fast I'm running but I fall into that same garmin trap of trying to compensate. So I will tap my lap button anytime I feel like I need to settle down and get a true picture. I didn't know I could set it to .25, I might have to see if mine does that bc I would definitely try that. I don't use my garmin at all for mile times during races, bc I like to be able to make myself slow down or speed up to make sure I don't go too fast and fall apart.

All that being said, I also run on a track, and on the treadmill. Bc both have the ability to constantly give me feed back of my speed I have really "trained" myself to feel my paces, just from repeatedly running on the treadmill or track. That's part of how I learned my pace. But I also ALWAYS run w music and being a former dancer, I can't not run on the beat. So I've painstakingly found songs that keep me on the right paces i want to be. I even move my playlist around for races based on this. It's not perfect but it is close. So maybe until u find you can recognize the 9:45 goal pace by feel, u can use one of these methods (shorter garmin intervals, counting your steps in a 30 second time frame, music, track or treadmill) to "learn" it.

If I want to stay really close to a pace, I set my interval to .25 miles. I know every quarter mile how my pace is tracking. I also have a screen that shows my current pace, but this can fluctuate wildly based on overhead obstructions blocking GPS satellites, so I rarely use it.
I do the exact same thing. Our weather changes so often, and so drastically, here in FL, going by feel is really, really hard; what *feels* like a 10:00 mile in 45* and low humidity can easily be a 13:00 mile the next day when it tops out at 85* and 90% humidity, right? So I have my running app calculate avg pace and tell me every 1/2 or 1/4 mile.

I also nearly always run mostly negative splits, so I don't keep a single pace the whole run, anyway. I'm kind of a second half runner naturally, so it works well for me to ease in slower in the first half of a distance and start picking up pace in the second half. The result is a fairly consistent avg pace overall on my long runs, but it sure isn't consistent within the run itself.

This makes sense. Before I really got into running as my primary exercise, I occasionally ran on a treadmill at the gym, and it was a 10mm pace. If I can't fall into a pace in the next little bit, I may try running at the gym. It's so freaking hot where I am, inside training at least allows me to run in the evening. But, gosh, how I hate the treadmill.

My run was tough this morning... humid and my step class on Monday is in the evening, so it was only a little over 12 hours since I killed my legs in step class! But I got about 36:00 in and get to relax the rest of the day/evening. :)

Spin tomorrow, run again Thurs, then Friday is my rest day. And so is Saturday this week, because I have a 5K race on Sunday, so I'll just use that for my weekend run, since the plan has 3 miles this weekend. Kind of weird that it drops so low this week!

Well this morning I got up at 7 and ran before work and it was so much better. It was still really humid but it was overcast which really made a difference. Felt fine after.
For those of you training on treadmills, do you feel it prepares you ok for long outside runs? I run on the treadmill in the winter because I do not like running in the cold but it feels so much different for me to actually run outside than it does on a treadmill. I can run on a treadmill forever and its easier on my lungs, etc. I also don't think I ever really get side stitches when I'm on the treadmill like I do when I run outside. For me I don't think I would be physically ready for a half if I did all my training on a treadmill, but maybe it's different for you guys?

I've ran 6 halfs and I've always done my runs on treadmills only. Running outside is definitely harder and I by no means was probably prepared for a few of the halfs but I managed to finish all of them even if I had to walk most of the end. Usually the first 3 miles are hard as I get used to being on the pavement, but afterwards I start to get back into my general rhythm, but of course I run slower when outside. I don't get side stitches either on the treadmill or pavement. Plus all the adrenaline from the race overshadows the difficulty difference for me.

The only time I run outside is when I do races. I wouldn't mind running outside between 5-6 am, but I just feel unsafe going out alone at that time in our town, also I'm too lazy to get up that early!

I actually run faster outside than on a treadmill... the pace that I run outside feels way too fast on the treadmill. I do feel like being able to run outside helps just with getting used to the pounding and the harder surface outdoors, too. I did the first 2.5 months of my Tinker Bell training on a treadmill though because winter in New England was terrible this year.

Same! When I go that fast on the treadmill I feel like I'm going to fall off. I guess it is because outside I'm controlling the road and on the treadmill, the road is controlling me.

I definitely run better outside than I do on a treadmill. On Saturday when I did my 4 miles on the treadmill, it took me about 50 minutes (about a 12:30/mile pace). On the other hand, my outside pace is much lower, usually in the 10:40 range.

This. I run faster outside too. Which is fun. :)

I started off running on the treadmill because i was injured and it was easier on my knees and being able to run on the treadmill was better than not at all. Same theory for when it's too hot or too snowy or too hurricane-y (did my last wine and dine training when sandy hit). I didn't notice too much difference DURING the race because of adrenaline and just excitement of being with everyone and running a Disney race. But I felt it later in my ankles. (This was actually Tink 2014 I'm referring to). Had I to do over, I still couldn't have done much about it due to weather but I would have iced down my ankles after or done an ice bath just to help recover. I am grateful for my treadmill all the time- I wouldn't have run nearly as much without it. That being said I do most of my running on softer surfaces even when I'm outside- school track, limestone trail... Runners world even had an article recently about running on concrete- even roads are better I think. But doing some, or even half of your training on a treadmill will still get you there! Especially if your conditions are much different from Florida in November (sometimes I think I'm better off doing a 10 miler in a warm-ish basement than in the cool fall low humidity air).

However if u will be running a hilly race (which wine and dine is NOT), definitely try to run outside some to get natural elevations and downhills.

Yep, I run faster and more comfortably outside too. I have a hard time maintaining my form on the treadmill. I always do my long runs outside but sometimes with weather or scheduling issues I may do my weekday runs on the treadmill.

I am pretty much solely am outdoor runner and do other workouts in the winter. I have tried treadmills but I am really pronated and have some crooked hips. Running straight enough to stay on atreadmill track is very difficult for me. Thankfully this past winter wasnt bad in michigan I feel way ahead of where I was this time of year last year.

I do all my training outside, even when it was really cold leading up to Princess last year. Mostly because I prefer to run outside so I don't pay for a gym membership and the base gym is too far really to bother. But my friend who ran Princess with me did mostly treadmill training and was just fine during the races. (I'd venture to say she's faster than I am and might have been better prepared!)

We train indoors and out ... It's so hot in Louisiana currently that our outdoor runs are short (1-3 miles) ... All we do. Basically Maint runs. When it cools, we'll do more and in the mornings we'll try ... But listen to our bodies.

Heat/humidity is nothing to fool with as a runner .. It will win!

So, I ordered my MVMCP tickets last night/this morning (at 1:37 am, actually ... #NightOwlProbz) and I got an email saying that they still weren't processed because of system availability issues and I'd receive an email when they were.

That was 12 hours ago! Has anyone else run into this problem? I guess I could call, but I figured I'd ask here before I waited on hold for forever ...

I do my week runs on the treadmill and then do my weekend runs (given the weather) outside. On the off days during the week I do strength training or participate in fitness classes. I found this method really helped me during Princess in Feb. I love training in cold weather. It is so hot right now in Georgia that I feel like I'm suffocating when running outside:faint:

I've never heard of that before, but it wouldn't surprise me. Disney's systems are temperamental at best.

I am still undecided on the Christmas party, but we can get the military tickets at the gate so we can decide last minute. I had decided against it, but now I'm leaning towards going.

JUST got my email. That was kinda stressful, but whatever. Got my tickets!

I've never used MagicBands before - we usually buy Florida Resident tickets when we get there (since we split time between Texas and Florida and still have a Florida address) ... should I order MagicBands to add these to and then add our Florida Resident tickets/annual passes when we get there? Is it even worth it? I'm such a MagicBand newbie.

I personally love the MagicBands! If you're staying on-site (I can't remember if you are since I know you have family in the area) they are free with your reservation. Otherwise I think I'd pick one up. They'll have runDisney ones at the expo!

We're staying offsite and my parents' house - except for the night of the race. Right now, I have a room on hold at the Swolphin but am still watching in case I can find anything better that's still almost as close (probably impossible) and is not ridiculously expensive (I'm using points for the Swolphin).

Would I get a MagicBand even if I don't purchase park tickets - just the room?

Sorry for asking such dumb questions!
