Wine and Dine 2015

I mentioned that I would like to put a flyer in the dog owners' mailboxes and plead with them to keep the dogs at bay if they see me running by for the 2nd pass (I do and out and back) and I just felt like she was acting as if I did something wrong and I should be the one to change my ways.

And did I mention that is ruins my run because I have to stop and deal with dog??!! :(
I also live in the country and have had issues with a number of dogs. I had to stop by and talk to the owner of one specific dog that chased me into the road and was almost hit by a car (the dog, not me). I told the owner that if the dog chased me into the road again, I would call the ASPCA. There are laws to protect dogs from bad owners, and I am not afraid to call in the authorities. However, most dogs just bark and remain on their property. I have learned to ignore them completely.

I love dogs but I carry pepper spray (more for bears than dogs). I dread the day that I eventually have to use it - not for my sake, but the poor dog's.

My #1 tip? Slow. It. Down. Seriously - heat + humidity is no joke and no one wants to wind up ill or, you know, dead. I run by feel, not numbers, in the heat. If you feel like your exertion level is comparable to a regular, less hot/humid day, then keep doing that, no matter what the pace is.
This is the key - I ignore my Garmin altogether on hot/humid days. I run to a level of effort/comfort on those days and take walk breaks if I feel it necessary (I hate walk breaks).

In the heat especially, you train to an effort level, not a pace.

Raw Threads shirts are amazing! They are super soft, comfy and dry pretty quick. I just bought a bunch during their online sale and plan on wearing one during W&D. They always have a booth at RunDisney expos which is where I was first turned on to them (Star Wars). You will enjoy them no doubt!!

I'm working on "costumes" now that I'm home again, and I *think* I've finally figured out what I'm going to work on for Wine & Dine. I'm so dumb - I can't believe I didn't think of it earlier.

I think I'm going to style my W&D outfit to commemorate my favorite EPCOT activity - Drinking Around the World!

I'm going to go with a silver sequin running skirt and then a white top - on the front, I'm going to make images of all the flags of the countries and arrange them in a circle representative of the World Showcase. On the back, it will say either "World Showcase Drinking Team" or "Wine And Dine Drinking Team" and then the number 15 (like a baseball jersey), and I'll have a C for captain on the sleeve.

Easy peasy!

AND ... I actually may be able to convince the husband to wear the same shirt with black running shorts ...

Love this idea Keels! Hope to see it during the race!

I have a random question :) I am doing the 5K also and was wondering do they have corrals for that also or how does that work. I looked around but didn't find anything but proof of time not needed for the 5K. Thanks!! On another note it is hot in Arkansas and the treadmill is my friend right now ;)

I ended up just doing my 4 miles on my parents' treadmill today. When I woke up this morning there were some storms in the area, so I didn't want to go out and get caught in that. Even on the treadmill it was slow and I did a lot of walking, but I got the distance done.

We did the 5k a couple of years ago and there were corrals but it seemed you were just randomly placed because we didn't submit times. It was actually kind of strange because I registered 4 of us at once and myself and 2 DSs were assigned one corral and my DH was in another!

Last year I was bitten by a dog on a run. I often run in a local park with trails through the woods. There are usually lots of dogs but they are always leashed. I try to give all dogs as much space as I can so I don't startle them. This elderly couple had 2 dogs, a large and a small one and don't you know when I ran by the little dog sprang out and bit my shin. I didn't even realize until later that I had dried blood down my leg (I was in a good zone and didn't want to slow down)!

Hey guys! I'm a bit new to this thread, I'll be running with everyone this Falll. I've done TOT & Avengers before, so I'm pumped for this race. This will be my first time completing any kind of training schedule for my half (I'm bad about it), so I'll be doing my 4 miles tonight. I actually hate running outside because of people and heat, so I do all my training on the treadmill. This will be my 7th half marathon!

ETA: Finished the 4 miles. I did a 5 minute warmup as noted and then a 1 min run 30 sec walk pace for the rest. 45 second walk when I got tired. Finished in 56 min, about 14 minute mile and I didn't get tired until the last half mile. Really proud of myself!

Got my 5 miles done today (I started on week 2 for scheduling reasons, so I'm currently doing week 3), although not quite as early as I would have liked! I delayed about an hour due to heavy rain. It was still raining when I went out, but not as heavy.

It's early but my training runs are already feeling better than Tink, just because I have a lot more running fitness now. I think spin is going to be good for my cross training. I already feel like I am seeing some improvement running up hills... or should I say just running them. I often had to stop and walk up them before. :o

Ok I have a gripe that I'm sure you all can relate to. I was talking to my coworker today about a dog that chased me when I was out for a run last night. I said that there are 23 dogs on my road and I've had to deal with at least half of them so far. I was saying that I wish that the owner would be outside when the dog is not leashed to rein it in when it is after me, and she said that that's why these people live in the country. To let their dogs run free. And I should find a different route. I was chased by a dog when I was 5, bitten by a Doberman when I walked in the door to someone's house and also chased while riding a bike by a dog which caused me injury because I fell off my bike. Let's just say my first instinct when confrontation is not to embrace the dog. I have pepper spray but really don't want to resort to that. I carry a stick, which used to be the size of a baton but became too cumbersome and has now become a nail I keep in my iphone holder on my arm. I thought about bringing dog biscuits with me but then I thought that might make them chase me even more!! And what happens when I run out of them? Lol

Um...no. I don't think living "in the country" gives you an excuse to leave your dog outside by itself without any restraint. I have a dog, and even if I lived in a more rural area the dog would not be unattended unless it was secured by a fence or a tie out. And even then I wouldn't trust him to be alone for more than half an hour or so, especially if there was a chance of people walking/running past the property. Things can happen--dogs get into things they shouldn't, people steal dogs, kids wander through the property and want to pet the dog. No matter how well behaved you think your dog is, the only really "safe" option is to keep the dog restrained or within voice control at all times. Even in my suburban town people will let their dogs wander and I just don't get it. I get paranoid even when I'm sitting right outside with the dog because I know he's faster than me and if he really wanted to take off after something (he's particularly fond of chasing deer) there's not much I could do to stop him.

The electric fences work very well - better than physical fences - but some people don't even do that. Really sad.

The last 2 weeks have been really busy for me so I slept in this morning and didn't get out to run my 4 miles until almost 9. It was so hot! I ran a little slower but my run felt ok. But when I got home I was trying to cool down and got really dizzy and nauseous. It felt almost like the flu and took me a good half hour to get back to normal. I was in the bathroom with my head between my knees trying not to throw up or pass out! Haven't had that happen before and it makes me a little nervous since it was only a 4 mile run and I have much greater distances to come!

I'm doing the princess 10k in 2016 and my friend and I are considering Wine & Dine for 2016. Talk to me about how the races are different and what we should expect at W&D.

Love it! And my husband would probably be happier with your suggestion then the crazy lederhosen I dreamed up for him! ;)

Got my 4 miles in yesterday. I had taken Thursday off because of a bum ankle and wouldn't you know it, not even a quarter mile into my run yesterday I tweaked my back going into a run interval. Seriously? Only me! I was quite determined to get the miles in for the long run through as I know that's what I have to build up. But it was painful, and a little slower than normal. Ironically for FL the weather was perfect yesterday morning for a run. Still struggling with pain in my back so I'm hoping that it will be gone by Tuesday so I'm back to business as usual.

One thing I've noticed, and has reminded me of progress, is I remember the first time I ran 4 miles in prep for the Enchanted 10K this past Feb. I was so sore afterwards. Yesterday, despite hurting my temperamental back, it was just another run for me. And if not for the back pain I felt good. No soreness afterwards, except the darn back. Proof that the training works and we all grow as runners!

Got my Mom's POT done this weekend in Colorado - flew up here to help her through her first race :) Lovely weather here, a bit chilly though! Coming up here and doing this makes it really feel like its Wine and Dine training season more than before!!!

Did anyone else notice the part about BEARS?!?!
