It's time for a tribute, folks. It's time to pay homage to that around which our Disney vacations really revolve. It's time to stop pretending that the only reason we're there is to see Mickey or make the kids happy or relax.
It's time to 'fess up!
Admit it, you know you do it, too. You plan your vacation around FOOD!
How can you take a trip to the World and not plan about/dream about what foods you're going to eat? In this chapter, we're going to pay homage to the foods we've chosen, the foods we don't even know we'll have, and the memories associated with said foods.
So let's recap the dining a little, shall we?
Sep 14- Casey's
Sep 15- Everything Pop Dining Lunch, Coral Reef Dinner
Sep 16- Chef Mickey's Late Breakfast, Everything Pop Early Dinner
Sep 17- Brown Derby Lunch, Villain Candy Apple, CS Dinner
Sep 18- Flame Tree BBQ Lunch, Boma Dinner, Goofy's Candy Co Snack
Sep 19- Kona Cafe Breakfast, Dole Whip Snack, CS Dinner
Sep 20- Crystal Palace Lunch, Lapu Lapu Fest, CS Dinner
Sep 21- Leaving Day
And to give DH, love of my life, dark knight extraordinaire his due, we will begin with the Slushy Coke.
When did the love of the slushy coke begin? For this, we will travel back through time, to DH's first few times in the World. I can't pinpoint the exact first time DH revelled in all that is slushy coke, but it was in one of the parks. And once we found them, we had to find them all! It became our sacred mission to search out the slushy coke and enjoy its yummy, cool, refreshing taste. We searched in Epcot, where they can sometimes be found by Test Track. And in MGM, where they've been all over the place. And then, the first time we stayed at the Pop. Ah, was DH in heaven then. A slushy coke every day? For breakfast, and upon returning from the parks at night! DH was in
. Staying anywhere but Pop became taboo. Why would we even consider staying somewhere that didn't have the slushy coke machine in the food court (NODoleWhipforTK).
What other loves do we foodies have? Well, I'll tell you.
Last year, at the Coral Reef I had, I believe one of my favorite meals ever. And I've had some pretty good meals in the World, but this ranked right up there. My main dish was the Pumpkin Risotto, and it was out of this world good. Right up my alley. My DM ordered it and said it was the winner dish of the evening, and it was. I topped it off with their Key Lime Tart, and I was in heaven. It was a perfect combo, and very, very good. At that point in the evening we were amused with how bad our waitress was (read condescending and rude and yet surprisingly not smart either) that we just didn't care and were enjoying our food.
Keeping it inside Epcot, we will now discuss what used to be my favorite caramel apple ever. And that, my friends, was in Germany. It used to be such that I required one of these every single trip. I will even go so far as to admit that I would lick the additional caramel off the wrapper they use to hold the apple.
And yes, my mother does have that photo. Sadly, last year, the German caramel apple suffered a tragic blow.
They changed the caramel!
Now I don't mind normal caramel on my junky apple from the Villian Candy Shop, it belongs there. But in previous years, in Germany the caramel was different. It was lighter in color, and had a much more refined taste.
I know, I know...I'm starting to sound like ZZUB. But if there's cause to mourn the pound cake, there's cause to mourn this apple. It was my favorite, and last year they changed it. And made it the same run of the mill caramel you could get everywhere else in the parks. Blech. I did eat it, and purchased one for DS which he enjoyed thoroughly, but it was a blow, people. I mourn the loss of my apple, and will not be getting one there this year. :::sigh::: Perhaps a Dole Whip would soften the blow...
Ah, the Dole Whip. I extol its virtue, and yet, have only had it once. And that was before I discovered the DIS. Before I knew how highly it was praised. See, even then I had good taste.
We opted for the Dole Whip float, and I am really looking forward to getting it on this trip. In one word, it was refreshing. I'm hoping if I'm lucky, I can sneak in different varities of Dole Whip!
Now, at the Brown Derby, I love the Cobb Salad. Back when my DM and I used to take solo trips, this is my favorite food memory with her. Depending on whether it was lunch or dinner, we would either split it or have our own. And I loved stopping to eat with her in the Brown Derby. It was a cool, air-conditioned break from the parks, and conveniently close to the Animation Courtyard which was like my mothership growing up. I can distinctly remember one trip with just me and her, the waiter taking our picture at one of the tables for two on the upper tier. Back when they used to have a piano player. Before 9/11 and severe budget cuts. Does anyone else remember the singers in Alfredo's? Later, when we brought DH with us, he actually won a free dessert by guessing one of the songs the piano player was playing, it was a fun game that night. We used to go in January when we were in college since we had a long break and Disney was so slooooooow then. Talk about walking onto everything. I'd love to do that again. So this trip, when I eat that Cobb, I will think of mom.
And while we're paying homage to mom, let's pay some homage to nana as well. Let's jump for a second to France. See, we ladies have a tradition. We've taken some trips just the three of us, and our tradition is always to head to Epcot, usually through the International Gateway, pop on over to France and get three glasses of champagne. We then toast ourselves, and our vacation, and sip our champagne and walk through the World Showcase. I don't know if I'll do that on this trip. I won't have Mom and Nana with me and DH isn't really a champagne drinker. I think DH and I may have to come up with a new drink tradition that's just for us. I would say a margarita in Mexico, but I do that with my father-in-law and somehow it just wouldn't feel right without him. I'll probably have it with my meal when we eat CS in Mexico, but it can't be the inaguaral drink. Any suggestions?
And since we're hopping all over my itinerary, let's jump back again. When I'm hungry later at MGM, I will be partaking of a junky apple at the Villian Candy Shop. I don't know what kind. Whatever I fancy. I'm sure you'll hear all about it from me in my trip report, and how lovely it was. I will skip CS dinner just to be able to eat this delectable treat. Who needs dinner when there are so many wonderful desserts?
Speaking of wonderful desserts, I'll be looking forward to making my own treat at Goofy's Candy Company, and letting DS pick his own. I think this is going to be one of the fun highlights of our trip, and I can't wait.
I must pay homage to the Casey's hot dog. I have had this wonderful meal so many times I can't count them. I have so many memories here, that it would take a whole chapter and then some to describe all the different times I've eaten a Casey's hot dog, and with who, and what the circumstances were. I'll give you one memory that's more recent to satisfy your curiousity. It was DS' first trip to the World and he was 8-9 months old. I had walked outside of Casey's briefly, and sort of ran into that really nice lady who will sing with the piano player sometimes. Do you all know who I mean? She's a really fun costumed character. Well, she spotted me, and spotted DS, and picked him up and started singing, "Baby face...you've got the cutest little baby face..." and then told me how cute he was, just like her grandchildren, and handed him back to me. No one from my family was with me, they were inside. I have no pictures, no video, nothing but my memory. Just me and my DS on his very first trip to the World, and his cute little baby face.
And as we near the end of the road, I'll finally get to taste that delectable goodness that is Tonga Toast, forever changing the TK world. I think that deserves some
And see, I've deliberately planned it for the end of the trip so in addition to meeting Tink, I'll have something to look forward to!
I'm part Italian, and so many memories I have are in some way tied up with food. The same for DH. Around specific holidays, we cook the same dishes. Things our grandparents made, our parents made, what our traditions are. And when we go to Disney World it's no different. We relive the same food traditions, and if we're brave, we try new things. Sometimes we happen on something without even realizing it, other times, it's a tried and true favorite. In this way, I look forward to my food memories, new and old, that we'll have from this trip.
And in truly fitting style, DS just woke up from his nap and asked to watch Ratatouille.
Boy...you'd think we were related or something?
So, I guess it's off to watch Ratatouille and remember
"I don't LIKE food, I LOVE it. If I don't LOVE it, I don't SWALLOW."
It's time to 'fess up!
