Will Monte Cristo fill you up?

Beignets are dessert, so yes, sweet. Basically imagine light-as-air doughnuts that are fried crisp to perfection. Comes with a raspberry dipping sauce and a vanilla cream (separate pots).
DH and BF usually split the Monte Cristo (and they are not small men), and I usually get the French onion soup -mmmm, then we get 2 desserts bc we can never decide between the bananas foster and beignets. So much goodness. Used to get the garlic fries but then we had leftovers and despite having the fridge we never seem to eat leftovers when we're at Dland.

I must be a little piggy because I was able to finish the Monte Cristo no problem :confused3 I did not have any appetizers or desserts though. I ate the whole Monte Cristo, my grapes, and strawberries. My plate was EMPTY! I have to say the picture shown on this thread has a lot more meat than mine had. I even had to peel mine apart to make sure it had ham in it as I couldn't see it.

Wow, this all looks yummy! And, yes very filling. Where are all of these things served? Thinking Cafe Orleans and Blue Bayou? Are there any counter services that serve any of the 3 - pomme frites, Monte Cristo or beignets?

We have shellfish allergies and would have to be sure that they deep fry any of these items in seafood/shellfish-free oils only. Even the cross frying can cause an allergic reaction ... not fun!!!!

No couter service will have all three or any of the three. You can take the food with you. Monte Cristo come in a meat variety from BB during lunch only and the cheese variety and other items come from CO.

As far as allergies let the waiter know your concerns or ask to speak to a chef and they will take care of it for you.

Wow, seeing all this food is getting me excited for our trip. We leave next month and have never tried the monte cristo nor the pomme frites. It will be a first for us after all these years visiting Disneyland.

No CS will have pomme frites or monte cristo but there is a walk up counter in the French Quarter outside of the CS rest there, the counter faces te train stop. It has beignets in a bag (3 or 6), mint juleps, and funnel cake. Don't remember if they gave dipping sauce or not - DH says he doesn't remember any either.

Not sure about your allergy but I think that window is dessert only but they may share a kitchen w the main marketplace there. (Just checked the French Marketplace menu and the only fish is Grilled Salmon so you might be safe!)

Here's our picture of the pommes frites......

.....oh wait, I wasn't quick enough! :lmao: Sooooo good!!!

If I'm thinking of the same place you are, the FQ place you're referring to doesn't actually sell beignets, they are "fritters". I have had them before and liken them to cream puffs without the cream (so just the dough). It comes with a dipping sauce but I wasn't too crazy about them.

Apparently its called the Mint Julep Bar, and they used to have fritters but now they have "Mickey-Shaped Beignets" as well as funnel cake and drinks. Had never noticed it before our trip this past Oct but we are also funnel addicts and used to go to Stage Door and the other one in Cali, so I'm guessing they either recently changed menus (or are new?). Here's the allears.net link: http://allears.net/dlr/din/menu/men_mint.htm with a Nov 2010 updated menu, and the main page (http://allears.net/dlr/tp/dl/nosq.htm) says they serve fritters but not once you click on the menu. Beignet away my friends!

This thread just made my DH very hungry and long for a visit to DL. Too bad for him that he's blocked out until 2011. :rotfl: Monte Cristo is his favorite. He looked over at my screen as I was reading this thread, saw the pictures, and said, "I want one!" I then got to remind him he's blocked. (giggle).

I think we will be eating at CO on 1/4/11. :lmao:

Is it true theres a $4 plate charge for sharing? I want to try this and share with dh but dont want to pay for a plate charge. DD wont like anything at the cafe that sells it cant think of the name. Blue bayou is outta budget for us.

Just don't ask them to split your food, do it yourself. My two teens and I go and one of us orders Monte Cristo, one orders the fries and the third usually doesn't order anything, or sometimes a salad.

Then when the food comes we simply take parts off of each plate. You can also ask them for an empty plate.

The charges comes from their having to do the splitting in the kitchen. This was told to me by the server because I asked specifically about it. Her reasoning was that they had to stylize the plate to fit the food that was being divided instead of the standard styling that they were already familiar with, so it took extra time. And usually extra sauce or something to "fill" the plate. Makes a little sense because when we pluck food off the main plate and plop it down on our own plates it's definitely not stylized and pretty, but it's still plenty edible, lol. Monte Carlo doesn't have a side dish, but for other entrees that do the split plate also includes sides for each plate.

I know some people find it unappealing to take food from other people's plates, even family, so they'll need to pay the fee and let the plates come out already divided and pretty. My family and I are uncouth enough to not have a problem sharing off our plates. Heck, we're bad enough that even when we all order our own entree we have a tendency to share bites just so we get to try each others' choice. But, hey, I figure if they have anything contagious I'll probably get it just being around them anyway, lol (ok, just kidding there). :rotfl:

The Monte at CO has two choices....the all cheese or the one with the ham and turkey plus cheese. We always get the meat version.

Also, since the Monte Carlo at CO doesn't come with any sides (unless you consider the raspberry sauce and powdered sugar sprinkled on top a side, lol)....so there is double the reason NOT to pay the fee. The Monte Carlo at BB DOES come with a side of gumbo or salad, I believe.

Here are pictures of the pommes frites and beignets. I also included pictures of the salmon salad (super yummy and refreshing) and the gumbo in case you wanted to see those as well :thumbsup2 Also, I apologize for pictures being different sizes as I had uploaded them at different times and resized some of them.

Those pommes frites look AMAZING! What is it on them? And what kind of sauce comes with them? Oh and where can you find them? Sorry for all the questions, we haven't eaten at DL in a great many years and we are eagerly awaiting our return!

ETA: I just found the menu for CO and read the description:

Pommes Frites - Traditional French-fried potatoes tossed with Parmesan cheese, garlic and parsley, served with a Cajun spice remoulade $5.49

Can you find them anywhere else?

Here's a recipe I found online a while ago...we've made them a couple times and it's pretty dern close:

French Fries:
1 Large Potato
2 tbsp grated parmesan cheese
1/2 tsp garlic
1 tbsp parsley flakes
a dash of Cajun spices
flour
Slice the potato lengthwise into shoestring size fries. Soak in a bowl of water with a little bit of salt for 15 minutes. Remove from the water and pat dry with a paper towel. Toss the fries in a ziploc bag with a few tablespoons of flour to lightly coat. Deep-fry fries for 5-10 minutes until golden brown. Remove and allow excess oil to drain for two minutes. Put in ziploc bag along with parmesan, garlic, parsley, and Cajun spices, and shake to coat thoroughly.
Cajun Remoulade
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup thousand island dressing
1/2 tsp garlic
1 tsp Cajun spices
1 tbsp lemon juice
1/4 cup celery
1/4 cup green onions
1 tbsp parsley
2 tbsp horseradish
2 tbsp dijon mustard
1 tbsp ketchup
1 tbsp worcesteshire sauce
1 tbsp cider vinegar
1 tbsp hot sauce
salt & pepper
Blend all ingredients in a food processor for about 10 seconds until thoroughly mixed; serve as dipping sauce for fries.

so dies the dipping sauce at Dl have horseradish
in it? Horseradish is one taste I just can't handle:confused3

Looking at these pics as I'm cold and it's nasty out, I want a Monte Cristo!!!!! Talk about "comfort food".. :cloud9:

not as strong a horseradish flavor as cocktail sauce

Honestly...there are so many flavors happening in this sauce I think you'll be hard pressed to pick out specifically the horseradish. I'd suggest giving it a try before dismissing it....and if you really can taste it (or your head can because you know it's in there, lol).....no problem, these fries are fab all by themselves too.

So true. Being the gauche Hawaiian that I am, I ask for mayonnaise and eat the garlic fries with that. The sauce is tasty but between the powerful flavors going on in both the sauce and dip I prefer a dip that tones it down ... come to think of it one of these days I'm going to have to ask for ranch and see how we'll that goes!
