Hi guys!
My wife since we have lived together (August of 2007) have tried to put away atleast 100 dollars a month in an emergency fund. Sometimes, when we get bonus's at work we will throw that money in the account. Also, during tax time we throw some extra money in there.
With that being said we had $5000 dollars in our account (topped it up when we got married.) We were saying the past few months "isn't it so great we have this emergency fund, and we've never had to use it?" Now we are eating our words!
Last month (2 weeks before Christmas) wifey was complaining of tooth pain. We went to the dentist and they said she needed ALL FOUR of her wisdom teeth taken out. Without any dental insurance, we were left to foot the bill of $1790 dollars. UGH!!!!!
Then, last night I'm sitting there and I've been sick the past few days with a real bad sinus infection and bronchitis, and I realize my jaw hurts a little bit. I decide to sleep on it as it is most likely because of the sickness I was getting over. Woke up this morning with a very sore jaw, and pain in my back tooth. I just got back from the dentist and need to get a wisdom tooth pulled. Since I still have all four and I'm going to be getting put under, I have decided to get all four taken out. Two of them are "boney impacted" whatever that means, and my surgery is going to cost $2250.
Bang!!! Almost 80% of our emergency fund wiped out. But, we didn't have to dip into our savings, or our bill account. But Jesus, $4000 in 2 months just on dental is obsurd. We are now looking for dental insurance lol.
