Why you should always have an emergency fund

Hi guys!

My wife since we have lived together (August of 2007) have tried to put away atleast 100 dollars a month in an emergency fund. Sometimes, when we get bonus's at work we will throw that money in the account. Also, during tax time we throw some extra money in there.

With that being said we had $5000 dollars in our account (topped it up when we got married.) We were saying the past few months "isn't it so great we have this emergency fund, and we've never had to use it?" Now we are eating our words!

Last month (2 weeks before Christmas) wifey was complaining of tooth pain. We went to the dentist and they said she needed ALL FOUR of her wisdom teeth taken out. Without any dental insurance, we were left to foot the bill of $1790 dollars. UGH!!!!!

Then, last night I'm sitting there and I've been sick the past few days with a real bad sinus infection and bronchitis, and I realize my jaw hurts a little bit. I decide to sleep on it as it is most likely because of the sickness I was getting over. Woke up this morning with a very sore jaw, and pain in my back tooth. I just got back from the dentist and need to get a wisdom tooth pulled. Since I still have all four and I'm going to be getting put under, I have decided to get all four taken out. Two of them are "boney impacted" whatever that means, and my surgery is going to cost $2250.

Bang!!! Almost 80% of our emergency fund wiped out. But, we didn't have to dip into our savings, or our bill account. But Jesus, $4000 in 2 months just on dental is obsurd. We are now looking for dental insurance lol.

If you have medical insurance, impacted wisdom teeth are often covered under that as out patient surgery. My dental insurance does not cover wisdom teeth removal. All of my children's were removed with a $50 out patient surgery copay.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Good job to you and your wife for being prepared!

I think your thread should be titled "Why it's important to have dental insurance." ;) Seriously, I would look into it...you just never know with teeth.

I had my four impacted wisdom teeth removed at the same time. My medical covered the 2 that were impacted. Call your insurance company!

NMW you crack me up hahaha!!! You got that right.

But I just called the surgeon, as well as my healthcare provider and all I'm responsible for is the x-rays, and a $25.00 copay! Thank you guys so much.

Wow, we have dental insurance and we just paid $980 oop for our copay for our sons impacted wisdom teeth. Our medical insurance wouldn't pay for that.

BEYOND happy lol. I will most certainly be adding this info to the website we're designing.

Isn't this wonderful!! :goodvibes I'm so glad I post everythig on the dis before I do anything drastic. Someone here always knows!!!!!! :cool1:

My dental ins covered my wisdom teeth removal at 80% and I had all four removed at once (and only had gas, not knocked out). I only paid $400 out of pocket.

Seems if your wisdom tooth removal is coverered under your medical insurance your wife's would have been too. You should still be able to file for that. They would reimburse you by check for the portion they should have paid. Might want to give a call back to the ins co and see about it.;)

Isn't that funny, I've been around here quite a while now and I really do think somebody on here will ALWAYS have the answer.
