Why would you bring an infant to a casino?

We're lucky here in IL. Smoking is banned in all public places including casinos. The only exception is for "Retail tobacco store" (more than 80% of their business is tobacco related).

About this time last year, they were talking about lifting the ban on casinos because revenue is down and neighboring states allow smoking but so far, it hasn't gone anywhere.

WI has a smoking ban but since the casinos there are operated by Native American tribes, they do not have to abide by the law. We have a lake house in that area so we go to Ho Chunk in the Dells. I have to leave my purse at home otherwise it takes days of me leaving it in the screen house to get rid of the smell.

This is totally OT, but do smokers gamble more than non-smokers?

I don't know if they gamble more or not but the casinos claim that they are loosing revenue because smokers go to other casinos nearby in other states that allow smoking.

I found this. Based on my own circumstances. The friends and family that we go to AC and Vegas with - none of us are smokers. I would love a smoke free casino in AC!! :thumbsup2

Gambling Addicts Aren't Necessarily Smoking Addicts

There is a false perception that most gamblers are smokers, say the reformers. It’s based on the notion that someone addicted to gambling will also be addicted to tobacco, says Hallett. For years, casino owners argued that 70 percent of gamblers were smokers. But in 2006, researchers at the University of Nevada, Reno, studied the habits of 17,723 gamblers. Only 20.9 percent of them were smokers — about the same as the national average. (Only 11.9 percent of California adults smoke.) The exception in the study was at rural casinos, where the percentage was 36.5. The research suggests that if casinos were made smoke-free, business would not suffer.

Very interesting, but not surprising. Non-smokers hate the smoky casino floors (at least I do). I would bet the casinos would make MORE money by going smoke free.

I agree. But we're the non-smokers! :rotfl: However if one opened among the many that allow it it should stand to reason non-smokers would flock to it. :confused3

We were in AC last week and it was very noticeable that people were smoking where they shouldn't and it wasn't being enforced at all.

Your wish is my command... Read this weekend in our local paper that the Revel Casino will be mainly smoke free (all indoor areas and most outdoor). Found here on the internet.

You would think but IL is saying that it's loosing guests to IN where smoking is allowed but not gaining any of the non-smokers from IN. :confused3

Personally, I think that they're using the smoking ban as an excuse. The reports only address smoking but fail to address the down-turn in the economy for the decline in revenue.

I was thinking more along the lines of a large casino presence like AC and Vegas. How many large casinos are there in one area in IL?

In the Chicago area, there are 5 but they are spread out among different suburbs. Actually, the ones in IN are closer to the city and they allow smoking there. People generally have to drive a bit so smokers must be willing to drive out of state.

It's not at all like AC or LV. They just opened the first land-based casino in IL a few months ago. All of the others are riverboats/barges.

We took our son to Vegas a few months before his first birthday. My brother was turning 21 & my parents took us all (me, bro, DH & son) on a trip to Vegas. He walked or rode through a few casino floors but mostly we walked the strip with him & spent time in the kids part of Excalibur to try & win him a few toys.
DH & I went by ourselves a few years ago & at first we thought it might be fun to bring the kids (We went to the big Star Trek convention) but after we saw the people handing out all the cards with naked women we thought we might wait a few years!!

When my daughter was about five, I took her to the casino in KC several times. They had a childcare facility. You checked the child in. The kids played with other kids, video games, play space, etc. The parent was given a special badge so that no one else could pick the child up.

I would go play the slots for a couple of hours while she had fun playing with the kids. They charged by the hour. It worked out great for both of us.

We were at the Borgata (in Atlantic City) this past weekend and I was really surprised at the number of babies and small children there.
Why in the world would you bring an infant to a casino? :confused3
It isn't smoke-free and the noise level can be really high and I wouldn't want to expose my kid to that if I could help it.
I can maybe understand if it was during the summer months, at least you can take them to the beach, but in February?
I can't imagine after planning an adult getaway weekend having to deal with a crying kid in the next room or seated next to you in a restaurant. :headache:
Do casino resorts have the right to exclude kids under a certain age from staying there?

The resort can't discriminate in lodging based upon familial status. But every casino I've seen bans anyone under 21 from the casino floor, including babies. Many casinos I've seen are smoke free in the hotel, if not the casino. Many have smoke free sections of the hotel and sections in the casino. Some of em have child care as well. As for crying kids in the restaurant, as long as the parents take the kid out to calm down, I'm not going to think anything of it. If they just sit there and let em scream all night, that's not cool.

The Bellagio in Las Vegas has a more strict policy.

http://www.bellagio.com/under21policy/
I don't think they enforce this, or else it's new. When my son was 15, we wandered all over inside the Bellagio and then went to the buffet. No one stopped us. This was in 2012 or so, though. At the time, kids could be in the casino, they just couldn't linger at any specific game.

Edit: Ugh. Didnt see how old this was. It was a timely thread for our 2012 (ish) visit. My kid turns 21 in a few months.

I never quite understood that policy since it was never enforced. That they have exceptions makes it extremely difficult to enforce, and in any case I doubt they want to make an issue of it.
