Why would you bring an infant to a casino?

:rotfl2:

We were at the Borgata last month and what floored us were all the pregnant woman. Hugely pregnant women. I couldn't imagine thinking hmm I wonder what I should do to prepare for the baby in my last trimester, I know let's hit the slots!

Why would this surprise you? In the last trimester of both my pregnancies I did more than stay home and nest, lol. Husband and I go to AC for shows all the time and I even went while 8 months pregnant. I live 45 minutes away. I wasn't disabled, just pregnant :)

What wrong with that? Are they suppose to sit home and wait for the moment? Most look at it as last chance to have fun for awhile.

Where should pregnant women go, in their third trimester?

And why shouldn't they go to casinos? What's wrong with them, that pregnant women should avoid them?

What you guys didn't act like shut-ins? What were you thinking going out, you were pregnant for goodness sake!

On a more serious note, I could see where a smokey filled casino would noy be an ideal place for a pregnant woman. I imagine that the pp was thinking more along those lines than what she said in her post.

There is no smoking in a NJ casino.

I went to a conference at the Bellagio last year and took both my kids. My dad met us there so the kids hung out with him while I was at the sessions. We did have to walk through the casino several times. It reeked of smoke so we walked through as fast as possible. I took my kids because my firm did not give me a choice about attending the conference and I don't leave my kids if the option is there to take them.

Nope, that isn't true. Their casino has 25% of their space allotted for smokers. The B bar also allows smoking. There is also smoking outside the theaters.

We frequent AC and smoking and smoke can be found just about everywhere. It reeks.

There is no smoking in a NJ casino.

According to the above poster that isn't true. She is speaking about the same casino the OP is and the pp mentioned.

Borgata Goes Clean Air
Borgata to be first Atlantic City casino to go 100% smoke-free

In an effort to best accommodate our customers -- smokers and
non-smokers alike -- Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa has submitted plans to the
NJ Department of Community Affairs (DCA) that will make the resort
the first 100% smoke-free casino in Atlantic City. To accommodate smoking guests, Borgata will offer several outdoor lounges that will be designated smoking areas. These outdoor spaces will offer guests a comfortable, climate-controlled environment reminiscent of Borgata.

We feel this decision will best maintain the fresh, upscale atmosphere
associated with Borgata, while accommodating both
smokers and non-smokers alike.

Subject to NJ DCA approval, the plans will take effect in compliance
with the Atlantic City smoke free ordinance.

So when you were pregnant you spent the third trimester doing nothing but prepare for the baby? You never went out to have any fun?

As far as kids at casinos, meh. Big deal. Most casinos have family friendly activities. I remember when rules weren't enforced in AC. My parents often took me onto the floor. The mere act of gambling isn't bad. It's how you handle yourself that makes a difference.

The Bellagio in Las Vegas has a more strict policy.

We stayed at the Monte Carlo in Vegas over NYE 2010 and maybe it was because it was a holiday weekend but they had security at both entrances and anyone who had small children in tow were stopped and asked where they were going and given a reminder that children were not allowed any where on the casino floor.
When we went to the bellagio, families were allowed in the main atrium (to see the decorations and such) but every casino entrance had casino security and they were most definitely asking patrons exactly where they were going with the kiddies.

Every activity does not have to be family friendly. I am so happy Vegas supposedly has left behind trying to make it self more "kid" friendly.

there is a reason it's called Sin city.

I think what surprised me was the number of them out at 3 in the morning. I know they pump oxygen into the casino but still I was exhausted and just surprised to see so many pregnant moms out and about at 3 in the morning.

I didn't see any family friendly activities when we went last month but I wasn't looking for them. I know lots of high rollers get free rooms so I would get how people would bring along the family I suppose. But really they were smoke filled and just didn't seem so great for Pregnancy. The borgata wasn't as smoky as the Taj (which was an ashtray and that's the night we saw all the pregnant mom's. It was like a convention)

Yikes and I didn't mean to offend the partying pregnant mom's. I went out in all of my third trimesters- but I guess I wasn't enough of a fun girl to think of hitting a casino.

How old is this article? Maybe the Borgata has since changed its mind, but there IS smoking there.

When you book a room you can choose between smoking and non- and there are designated smoking areas throughout the casino (right between the Bread and Butter and Bobby Flays, and in the area by Wolfgang Puck restaurants to name two). Also, people smoke in the non-smoking areas.

I don't think it would be smart for them to go totally non-smoking. Competition is too tough and smokers would go where they can smoke.

We took our 14yo son to Vegas last year for the Nascar race.

I told him next time we take him, he will be 21.

He had fun - saw Blue Man Group with DH, and played at Gameworks with DH, and went to the arcade at our hotel (Excalibur).

But, I will admit that actually taking a "real" vacation with no true purpose other than to have fun, in Vegas, is not a good idea with a child.

We took DS specifically for the Nascar race. We stayed only 2 nights, and each day we had something planned for him.

From what I am reading it seems that some casinos in some states are family friendly and encourage you to bring the kiddies.

I don't think the Borgata is one of them though.

I know it is hard for some people to comprehend, but there are places that, although kids are allowed, are not appropriate for them to be there.

When I see a place where 99.9% of the people are adults, it's strange to see infants there too.

I guess in some minds there is no place where their kids shouldn't be able to go.

And I have to say that Las Vegas is different. Las Vegas calls itself a family friendly destination.

The casinos on the broadwalk I can see attracting families because of the beach and boardwalk. The Borgata is different because it's on the marina and from what I can see does nothing to advertise itself as family friendly.

Personally, I wouldn't want to take an infant into a Casino if I were going to spend any length of time there, especially if it is smokey. Not that I think there is anything morally wrong with taking them, but seems like it might be quite a bit of over-stimulation for them, with the lights and noise.

If it's just walking through a casino to get to a restaurant, than I would.

I confess! I bring my kids to the casino twice a year!

In my case, it's for a work convention. I stay 3 nights, and bring the family with me. I work during the day, and DH takes the kids down to the OC boardwalk, out to lunch, etc. We meet up when I'm done for the day, and have dinner at one of the restaurants.

I have not stayed at the Borgata, but since it's so close to the convention center, I wouldn't be surprised if there are people in a similar situation staying there!

Yeah, I wouldn't take my kids if I was going to gamble or party, but for work conferences, outlet shopping, etc, it's just a hotel!

That article is from 2008 when Atlantic City was supposed to go smoke-free. When the economy went in the crapper they reversed this policy and went with the 25% smoking area policy. Also, when Pennsylvania opened their casinos there was more competition and they didn't want to lose their smoking customers altogether.

DD 12 spent the weekend in Atlantic City at one of the hotels a few weeks ago because of a dance convention. Obviously she wasn't in the casino itself. But, they made good use of other hotel amenities.

I have been in casino management for 15 years on the MS Gulf Coast. While children are allowed in certain areas of the resort, we definitely don't encourage adults to bring their children for a family vacation. You'll never find an advertisement for one of our casinos with children in it. In fact, we try to discourage children by not allowing strollers in the casino; adult only pool parties; minors must be attended by someone at least 30 years of age for a concernt; etc.

I'm not saying that I'm personally against children in the casinos because I've brought my own kids to eat at the buffet. But I wanted to share an inside perspective from someone who has sat in on meetings regarding minors in the casino.

This is from 2007-2008 and I'm not sure it ever went into effect. I am sure it is not now.
