Why would someone do this to a tree?

Someone in my neighborhood spent weeks painting his tree and we watched in dismay as it became more and more of an eyesore. And isn’t this probably going to end up killing the poor tree?

Hope you live in a neighborhood with an HOA! I know lots of people hate them, but they would nip this in the bud!

I don't find it odd that someone would look upon that and think thoughts on it. I however do find it odd that people feel the need to create little groups to tell others what they can or can not do with their own property. Why does this need nipped in the bud if it's not your tree? I know the answer to that to which I say, I don't care, it's not your tree and not your property.

That tree is definitely dead. I wonder what the significance of the colors are...

You can paint tree trunks to strengthen them over winter and also to protect against pests. It just has to be latex, not acrylic or oil. It's done in various parts of the world and does not kill the tree.

That said, I assume they did this as an art piece. Do you know what kind of tree it is? I know everyone keeps saying it's already dead, but that's what certain trimmed trees like crepe myrtles look like in the winter and they are not dead.

Tree certainly looks dead. Maybe they are waiting for their tree service to come out and cut it down?

I'm guessing the red was to apply some Christmas cheer, but really it looks like something from Stranger Things.

Tree looks scrubbed clean, yard is neat and tidy, home looks modest so best guess is they just decided to make it art, possibly because they are so expensive to remove. Seems like someone is at the door in the photo so I would probably have just said it is an interesting piece of art and asked if the colors are special in some way. If the artist is color blind the red looks like green so they can't tell it's unusual.

Honestly, I don't nwcwssarily hate the concept, but the execution though doesn't look so hot, at least in that picture. I would say if you are going to do something like this, you have to make it really good.

Yikes. Why does my opinion bother you so much? Everyone is free to chose where they live. I personally like living in a neighborhood with a strong HOA. After living in one without an HOA, I am grateful that there are rules to keep our property values high. Homes in our neighborhood generally sell within a day of listing, so having an HOA isn’t running people off.

And this artistic tree would not be allowed.

Quite possible that this is a work in progress.

And now, this tree artist has an even wider audience, so OP is officially obligated to keep us informed on the changes. That's right, full coverage!
