Why would anyone sell their DVC membership?

If management continues to put more emphasis on selling and building new DVC resorts and less about maintaining the current resorts then we will be selling.

I have to clean and repair my personal home. I am getting tired of doing that when I arrive at my DVC home.

Also the last couple of trips to the parks were not as enjoyable as past years. We might do as Deb and Bill and sell off some of ours for a timeshare at a nonDisney location.

We have been going for over 25 years and I finally think we are getting tried of it. We will probably take shorter Disney trips and start taking more to other locations.

Except for HHI DVC, I never tire of going there.

:) I am actually not DVC. I enjoy the resorts very much (have also been to HH). But I like to keep my options completely open. We love a Bed and Breakfast in London, enjoy staying at a small family-run hotel in Paris, as well as the Auberge St. Pierre on Mont St. Michel - and other places too! I'm staying at the Candy Cane Inn and the Ayres Anaheim in CA (the latter I've been to already and very much liked, the former has great reviews). It is nice to have every choice in the world open to me.

Sounds good!

I also like to keep options open, and DVC is one of them. We use it enough to make the points worthwhile. As someone mentioned, if we sold, the prices might go up more than we would want to pay to buy back in.

We just bought a condo in Colorado as another option. We can trade out with other Intrawest condos, and rentals will defer some of the cost. Plus we will now have cheap ski lodging.

In the long run we might sell it all if we find a couple of those quaint European dives.

I feel the same way. Is it just us??

I think that Disney's aggressive marketing and loose licensing is killing the magic. You can find Disney on every aisle at WalMart. Yuck!

We sold a 70 point add on last summer mainly due to unexpected business expenses here. Sold it for $20 per point more than we paid for it. We still have 3 DVC contracts.

Job loss

The quality was something we had already begun to feel was declining prior to above. :tiptoe: The rooms are just not being maintained and cleaned that well. We stayed on points at CSR 2 years ago due to lack of availability at any DVC resort and it was refreshing how great everything was. :magnify: Very clean and just impeccable. We have not felt this at DVC with many many stays in the last several years. But we still love DVC & still own enough points for 1 trip a year. POOR ME! :grouphug:

The parks are so crowded and we have done everything to death anyways that we are "taking a break" on that front. :coffee:

When we add up the total cost of vacations, DVC was actually the easy part but due to our current financial situation the part we sold now funds the whole trip we do take each year. :wizard: I'm still having panic attacks though. :scared1:

As someone else said the commitment had already become something we were no longer really into. We have never been anywhere else in the 8 years since joining. :beach: So we need to branch out a little more if gas prices ever come down. :drive: :moped:

We may add on if our situation changes but this actually forced us into a more rational allotment of points. The whole DVC/ Disney thing was about to send me to DVC anonymous :drinking1 or an intervention :teleport: anyways.

We just listed our DVC. We're selling because our family got bigger and we have a small (100 point) contract so we would need to add more points or constantly borrow.

Plus we're getting Disneyed out, we would like to go on other vacations and don't want to have to worry about banking/borrowing points. I don't want to feel like I "have" to go to Disneyworld every other year.

Oh yeah and it was an impulse buy that we didn't completely think through. With that being said I don't regret it and we won't be losing money buy selling.

Why I am selling my DVC contract:

I bought in at the Beach Club in late 2001. We honeymooned there in '99 and fell in love with the resort. I really didn't do my homework and neglected to look at the difference in costs for annual dues for each resort. OKW vs. VB = HUGE difference, and for obvious reasons of course.
After a few years of trying out all the different Orlando based DVCs, we decided we liked OKW the best. We like to take friends with us and the OKW 2-bedroom suites ROCK. It was then that I found out about the difference in dues depending on where you own. Depending on the number of points you have, it can make a pretty good sized difference in annual dues.
This past Spring, we opted to buy a resale contract at OKW. My plan is to sell my BCV contract, but I haven't yet gotten around to it and want to use up my remaining points on it for the year, since I have paid the annual dues on it already.
Selling a contract w/ higher annual dues for another contract w/ lower annual dues may not be cost-effective for everyone, but hopefully it will net out to be a good deal for us. I bought in at BC for $72pp and got my new contract at OKW for $75pp. My hope is to sell BC for somewhere in the $90-95pp range.

We owned back in 2000 at VB but due to some problems with a business venture of mine we felt we had to sell in 2005. We used our DVC membership all the time and within hours of the closing felt just awful.
Sellers remorse I suppose.
We still went to WDW each year we were not DVC owners but it just didn't feel the same. We loved the parks and still had a great time but we would always visit the DVC resorts and do tours at the sales center. From the moment we sold we talked about buying in again.
Jump to 2 weeks ago when we purchased 175 points at SSR and have our first trip home the end of August:banana:

good luck with your decision!

:cheer2: WELCOME HOME AGAIN!!!:cheer2:

I think the last trip was better than the previous trips and I'm hoping that trend continues. Although WDW is not the sparkling clean, nearly perfect place it was 30 years ago. (Can they PLEASE strip and repaint the ladies room bathroom stall doors off the BW lobby - those things have been gross for five years - and the best they've done is put more paint over doors that five years ago had been painted six times too many. Its Disney, make another set of doors and paint them - then replace the ones up and go strip them for next time its obvious you can't give them even one more coat of paint).

However, I'm with Sammie - with an extention - if WDW continues to emphasize serving more people - more resorts, more rooms - at less cost with the same park/restaurant infrastructure, it isn't worth it for us either - at least, not once the kids outgrow it. Used to be you could at least go when it was quiet and get a good value, now the parks are almost always busy - standing in long line after long line isn't my idea of a great vacation. We know the system, so we avoid a lot of the lines, but still - we feel shoulder to shoulder all vacation. I don't WANT to make ADRs six months in advance. I don't want full hotel restaurants.

:sad1: I had to sell my other contract earlier this year due to job loss and financial difficulty.

Just to clarify, I can certainly see why Members will sell some of their points.
We are actually in the process of selling one of our 10 contracts. It's actually more of a reorganization of our points since AKV is coming on line.

I believe your question is why people would sell their "DVC membership".
That's a whole different ballgame.

MG

We did the same - reconfigure the portfolio to adjust to a new use pattern and new resort.

Yep! We went in January and were shocked by how crowded it was! We are going again for free food, staying value for the first time, but after that I think we will take a few years off from Disney. The kids are all old enough now to enjoy almost any vacation and we really want them to see the world (well, oldest starts college in a couple of years, so we want to have a few great trips at least before that!)
Actually, we sold both of our contracts due to a series of financial problems (moved and had two house notes for several months and got scr***d by the IRS!) Now that we are in the black again we will just spend our $$$ on other stuff.
I have to say, though, we will have to try out AKV (or is it VAKL, or???)

I totally agree with the above.

We have been going for alot of years and I finally think we are getting tried of it. We will probably take less Disney trips and start taking more trips to other locations. This year we are going to both the beach and out West. It was time for us to sell frankly because the selling was good. We paid cash for the contract and had it long enough to have broken even we felt. Actually we made a profit. All is good and I am glad we sold. It doesn't mean we love Disney any less, we just don't want to do it as often or in a Villa. We stay Deluxe every time so we have enough room for our family. We do all table reservations every trip and the only appliance I used was the refrig which I can get in any of the deluxes so the kitchen wasn't such a big thing for us. After having a front loader washing machine, I didn't like how our clothes looked using the machines with the aggitators in them. So I wasn't using going to use the washer/dryer anymore. Really for us, it was the time to sell. It's all good.:hippie:

yea MG - but lots of DVC members have one contract - not several.

divorce - one wants to kept it but the other wants to sell, death - beneficaries don't want DVC, they need money NOW, or a better opportunity comes along.

I will definitely get rid of some of mind if and when CRV comes along.

I have a question what is CRV??

We bought in late 1996 (just missed the free passes), added on 3 times for a total of 4 contracts (two and hilton head and two at okw). For 3 of those contracts, i had a CM discount and only paid about $48 a point. Sold off 3 of them (kept one HH contract) and actually sold for more than we paid for 10 years of usage.
Our reasons to sell, we wanted to use the proceeds of the sale to buy an RV. Once i found the RV that i wanted, i forgot all about DVC! i'd NEVER dream of giving up going to disney each year, but this way with the RV, we can stay LONGER at Ft. Wilderness and still go to other places (if the price of gas doesn't kill me first, lol). Plus, like others have said, i don't think disney is keeping up the resorts as well as they should, DVC is just getting too large for my tastes and we figured the market was good to sell, which proved to be true. At some point, it won't be and i didn't want to reach that point. I used to buy every thing i could with the DVC logo on it, but it just stopped being special for some reason. Plus, dues have gone up considerably. i STILL love OKW and consider that my first DVC home and we will stay there again for sure and also at HH. I think it would have killed me to not go to HH resort.
I am so glad when i bought in and added on that i bought small contracts (50 and 100 pts) so selling off was easy and i was still able to keep a nice contract for myself.

I had responded in a similiar thread awhile ago. We've been members since early 1996 and had accumlated 1000 points over 7 contracts for various DW properties, HHI and VB. We loved every trip to those locations through the years including using Conceirge and going to Keystone for skiing multiple times. Disney excercised ROFR on one of HHI contacts and we'll be going one last time in August and then closing right after. We started selling all our properties in April and are down to one remaining 100 point contract to sell. Our only reason for selling is that we also want to try other things such as all oceanfront vacations and Europe. Now that our daughter is entering high school doing as many trips will be difficult with HS sports. We have so many fond memories of many trips since our daughter was 3 and with many family and friends. No regrets at all having bought DVC. We won't be able to do the 3-4 vacations a year as we had in the past. The fact that we can sell most of the contracts with a small profit after closing costs is also a nice benefit. We loved Disney and who knows, maybe we'll buy back in 20 years or so when we're grandparents and start doing all those trips again.
DVC customer service was always great. I still remember getting chased out of HHI when hurricane Charlie approached and they reimbursed us for points for the last night not used and during that stay the A/C had broken and they also moved us into a new unit. I don't think that type of customer focus is common in the industry.

I feel like I can answer this because we are considering selling ours. A major reason is that I love hotels. I love daily maid service. I love nightly turn-down service. I hate the fact that you don't get fresh towels and clean sheets every night at DVC resorts, unless you pay extra for it. I thought when we bought that I would get used to these things (after 2 trips) and be okay with just washing our towels daily, but I didn't.

I also want to stay at different resorts at Disney. I want to stay at the POLY with the MK view. I want to stay at the BC or YC. I feel tied to BWV, which is our home resort. Don't get me wrong, I love the BW. It's just that last trip when we took the boat from the MK to eat at Kona, I was sad walking into the great ceremonial hall, knowing that I can't really stay here with DVC. I feel too much that my vacation decisions are decided for me for the next 30 some years and I don't really like it. When I told DH that I want to stay at the POLY in May 08, I expected him to talk me out of it, because of DVC. Instead he told me that I should book the trip I want and maybe we should sell our DVC contract. At the very least, we can bank our points. I booked the POLY. DH is now trying to convince me to switch to the YC/BC (his favs) and we'll do the premium plan. He knows I love premium plans and is just trying to get me to switch to his resort. :rotfl:

I want to go on a Disney cruise maybe next year. Except that I know that I can't use DVC for that-way too many points-we are a family of 5. That makes me feel like we shouldn't do the cruise. :confused3 Or maybe we should just sell the DVC and than pay for the vacations we want to do. In 2 years we want to go to Universal-my kids are huge, huge Harry Potter fans. I know we will all want to stay at a Universal resort-and then that's another vacation not using DVC. We want to go to Hawaii in a few years when our DD 5 is older. I want to actually research and PICK the hotel we stay at, not hope for an aceptable trade through Interval.

In retrospect, buying DVC probably wasn't the best fit for our family and the way we like to vacation. After 2 trips at BWV, I am ready to stay somewhere else. However the only other DVC resort we would do is the BCV. I don't want to have to call at 7 mos day by day, go on waiting lists, etc. I just want to pick up the phone and call WDW travel and tell them I want to stay at the BC-done! I feel like using DVC every trip we would be settling for something that wasn't our first choice. I'm thinking DH is probably right and that we should sell. I have to admit that the thought of selling makes me feel happy-kind of like we'll be free to than do whatever we want with our vacations. I guess that's a sign we should sell.

Very few hotels provide clean sheets every day anymore. Usually just every three or four days.
