Why no microwaves?

I would imagine that the electrical wiring in the values couldn't handle the load. Those microwaves draw a LOT of power.

You can stay at the BWI Garden Suite and get one like we did. It was great.:)

A microwave in the rooms would give our family more options for sure, however we will make do just fine. Our plan is on table service days to eat two meals in the room and on counter service, just one. Breakfast always, and sandwiches the other... Hopefully we wont miss a microwave too much. Disney can want my money all it wants... I only have so much to give...:teacher:

Some of it has to do with wiring. They need to have GFIC outlets with the circuit breakers for microwaves--you can see the reset button in the outlet of the photo of the Garden Suite at BWI.

Most new homes have these in the bathroom and in the kitchen (depending upon building code.) With a GFIC if the circuit is overloaded, or gets in water, the circuit will pop and shut off power thus preventing a fire. When doing home remodels most people will put them in--they're a really great safety feature. (I like the peace of mind the GFIC outlets give me.)

(Ground Fault Interruption Circuit.)

FWIW.

The DVC resorts are called "home away from home" because they do have at least a microwave and then a full kitchen and washer/dryer in the larger villas. As was mentioned there are microwaves in the food courts as well as the larger toasters for anyone to use. I know the DVC villas take longer for mousekeeping to service due to all the appliances, etc. that need to be cleaned. Imagine a microwave with splatters and the time it would take to clean when time really isn't allotted for that in resorts other than the villas, FT. Wilderness, and the family suites at ASMU.---Kathy

I call them GFCI - Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter.

We like to stay in a DVC "studio" with a kitchenette. All DVC studios have them. They have a microwave, fridge, sink, and toaster. It is so convenient to bring left overs back to the room. Here's a picture link: http://allears.net/acc/bwstudio22.jpg. It's from BWV; our favorite.

I didn't know that was an option. What was the fee for this?

Thanx

There was no charge for the microwave at either the GF or the BC - both times we called housekeeping and they brought one to the room (and it remained there for the rest of our stay).

doesn't the food courts have one??? Thought I remember one at the POP food court, or maybe I'm just loosing my mind...:crazy2:
as far as a fridge, we paid one trip for it then decided it was much easier(and cheaper) to put ice in the cooler and put it in the bathroom, kept the couple sodas and milk cold enough for what we needed( I use milk in my coffee) plus we get donuts from Dunkin, makes for a much easier quick breakfast when trying to get them all up for the parks, we save our money to buy lunch in the parks!;)
Yup most hotels do have these, but considering how much else you get at Disney, specially the feel of staying at Disney and how much the kids love it, I wouldn't trade thier happiness for a micro or fridge for nothing!
Course if Disney did put them in I wouldn't complain!! ;) :goodvibes

I wouldn't be surprised to see microwaves in the rooms, eventually. Especially at the deluxes and at CSR. Disney always seems to resist these kind of room improvements until it becomes absolutely clear that they have to make the improvement in order to stay competitive.

Disney gets knocked a lot on these boards for their deluxe resorts not being "real" deluxe. Puting microwaves in the rooms would be a step in the wrong dirrection IMHO. I've never stayed at an upscale hotel with a microwave. Lots of expensive "suite" type hotels with full kitchens - sure - but not an upscale hotel. Could someone tell me the types of hotel chains that are now including a mircrowave? I don't really see it as a trend in the hotels I frequent.

As far as reheating leftovers goes, I once successfully warmed leftover Chinese food using a hair dryer.

When I was teaching we had a small fire in the lounge bc someone forgot about their popcorn popping in the microwave. Brand new school with a burnt teacher's lounge. It might be a fire hazard.

A GFCI does NOT disconnect the power if there is too much current draw, it is NOT a circuit breaker and won't work like one. GFCI's are required within certain proximity of any water source, such as in the bathroom, or kitchen (or in the case of the picture in this thread, next to a sink). A GFCI outlet compares the current flowing INTO the outlet on the HOT side to the current flowing OUT of the outlet on the NEUTRAL side. If there is a difference (about 5 milliamps) then the outlet turns off. This is to protect you from shock.

However, in the case of a short, or other HIGH current draw, the current flow will be the same on both sides of the outlet, and the GFCI will NOT activate. That is what a circuit breaker is for.

Me too. I tried eating some left over :crazy2: :crazy2: cold pasta during our last stay. Yuck!
Gotta plan ahead better. Ask your server what tastes good cold :teeth: Seriously. I know a couple of years ago at Turf Club, when I was way too full for dessert, my server recommended one that didn't need refrigeration.

I'm going to agree here. Deluxe accommodations are usually reserved by people who are looking to get away from everything domestic while on vacation. (no cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc). Putting a microwave in a deluxe unit will decrease that "on vacation" feel for many just as placing a vacuum cleaner in a corner would. LOL.

Another very good reason for Disney to keep microwaves out of the rooms would be the cooking smells that ultimately permeate the hallways. What smells great to one person might be less than palpable to another.

If one is looking for a microwave / toaster / etc reserve a Villa (I love them!) Here, you expect to have the cooking smells. (And yes, every villa comes complete with a vacuum too ;))
