As a conservative (not a Republican)

This is totally OT, but that struck me as funny. I have always considered myself a fiscal conservative and the republicans now in office offend me to the core.

I'm all for an African American or woman (or both) being president but God please let it never be Condi Rice! Ugh! I'd rather have Dubya for another four years and believe me, I can't stand that man!

I'm also not very crazy about Hillary (though I loved Bill Clinton) but I'd take Hillary any day over Condi. I hope Barack Obama runs and wins. I do think the country is ready for either a black or woman president and I suspect 2008 could be the year.

As for the original topic, I voted that a black would get there first.

If ever a woman could do it, it would not be Hillary. I think she's over-maligned to a strange degree, and I have always liked her, but she is far too disliked to ever win a presidential race. Politics aside, she does not have a popular persona.

But even if there were a perfect woman candidate right now, I mean completely qualified in every way for the job and exactly the right personality and family and no skeletons whatsoever, it will take much longer for the country to feel secure with a woman at the helm. As progressed as we Americans consider ourselves, there is still an incredible amount of backwoods thinking here, when it comes to women and minorities. It almost seems worse than 20 years ago.

Sad.

I really think Obama could get there though. So far it looks like he has enough going for him that he could really break through.

That's exactly why I wrote it that way. I'm conservative both morally and economically and I have totally lost faith in the people in office who call themselves conservative.

Mickey Mouse has a better shot at becoming president than those you have listed....

Unfortunately I might add....

On the news in Chicago this morning... he's not officially throwing his hat in the ring, but he said he's now considering it and will make an official decision after the elections in November.

He's very charasmatic, and people seem to like him... I just don't trust him. I'm not crazy about his moral decisions.

I don't think anyone thinks of themselves as not "morally" conservative. Morals do not change. However, I am "socially" liberal. I am not against gay marriage; I believe in a woman's right to choose; I am an environmentalist, but most of all, I believe that you should not spend money on programs (whether social or military) unless you have the money to pay for them.

Every election year Mickey does receive a high amount of votes. Although he has never had enough votes to carry a state.... :(

I don’t think Condoleezza Rice would be elected because she’s unmarried. Buchanan was the only unmarried president in US history. When it comes to image voters want that “All American” family: husband, wife, 2.5 kids, and a dog.

I think Barack Obama uses more liberal rhetoric than the public at large is comfortable with. Some people feel the current administration leans too far on the conservative side. I don’t think they would elect someone who leans far on the liberal side. It would be a “safer” vote to elect someone who is more moderate in their rhetoric.

A black man will become president before a woman. My prediction is that it will be Obama.

FWIW, I'm a Republican and am intrigued by Obama. I have to investigate a little more, but at this moment, I think I could vote for him. He'd certainly be a breath of fresh air. He might be exactly what this country needs.

Yea and show me ANY politician who is NOT interested in power. Give me a break. If someone was only interested in helping their fellow man and had no interest in power and influence for themselves, they would join a charity, they would NOT become a politician. Politicians are a special breed.

You're right generally, probably about 90%, probably 10% of them are really interested in public service and not power for power's sake.

You don't like the way she votes, don't vote for her. That I understand.

It's the folks who *hate* Clinton - the folks who find her significantly worse than any other mainstream Democrat - the ones who would move to Candana - those are the one's I'm curious about.

If you find Senator Clinton worse than other mainstream Democrats, why?

I don't HATE them at all, 'cause I don't hate anyone. I'm from Ark. so I know them better than most. I kinda grew up with them running the state, all through the 80s. If you come from that perspective you would probably know. A lot of us here were so shocked to see them make it as far as they have. It has been one scandal after another with them. From land deals, sending state troopers out to "silence" detractors, I could go on and on for days. A lot of which never came out, which is why many of us were shocked that they made it as far as they did.

I'm not talking about the Monicas, and the Gennifers and all that, I'm talking about scandals that were much worse, much more than just messing around with chicks.

The main problem I have is that I defy you to name 3 things they have even done for the little people which, I guess, they claim to represent. Ever since I can remember they were always in CYA mode dealing with scandals.

They even took polls on where to go on vacation for heavens sakes. I don't want to go on about this 'cause its totally played, I just have a hard time understanding what there is for anyone to LIKE about them.

If you do please name me 3 things they have done for the "little person." I would bet you can't name anything. Googling doesn't count.

I'm not sure I agree with that, I know that my morals have gone through some adjustments through the years. There is a general level of societal morality that stays the same, views on murder and violent acts like rape come to mind, but there are some that are changeable. For example, many who call themselves moral conservatives believe in the death penalty and I used to be one of them, but I no longer can support it.

I believe that the government should keep out of the way as much as possible, including staying out of marriage. The government should not legislate who can and who cannot marry-but that also means that people cannot use the government to compel sacramental marriage on the basis of civil rights.

I agree, but then again I disagree. I think plenty of people think of themselves that way, and IMO, it's pretty disgusting that many conservatives tried to lay claim to being morally superior.

Not only are morals subjective, they don't group together into different camps.

I think the morally superior claim runs both ways. Liberals claim to be morally superior because of their tolerance and commitment to social justice. There is also a streak in liberal conversation that leans toward intellectual snobbery. The Republican party used that rather successfully against John Kerry. Listen to Air America for a few days with an open mind and you'll hear it. BOTH sides want to claim that they are on the side of the angels.

Is readin' about it okay with you or do we need to interview them personally?

Just to be clear - you are arguing that you know the Clinton's better than anyone because you watched them closely - when you were 4. You must have been one astute pre-K kid!

Funny how the voting age folks in Arkansas didn't feel the same way. The elected him governor, what, 6 times? They voted for him 53%-35% for President in '92 (53% being the highest percentage any candidate got in any state that year).

They must not have the insight you and your friends had from the nursery.

Can we pass a law requiring this to be tattooed on the forehead of everyone elected to Congress?

I believe Mrs H.Clinton will become the first female president of the United States within 8 years, just curious though, would Bill's title be First Gentleman, First Man, or something different?

I would think he would just be refered to as "Former President Clinton" just as he is now.

What would be a good title for the husband of a president? It took many years before we settled on "Mr. President" and "First Lady"

I vote for "First Gentleman".
