Who is destashing in 2010?

Ok! I have not reported in a while but I have gotten rid of 6 boxes of stuff. I have my DS5 telling me he needs a donation box. I have to watch him though, he is throwing stuff in there that is brand new just because he wants other to people to enjoy it. I have started in my craft room this week. This room is going to be hard. I have to be honest with myself and get rid of some the craft things I will not use. Wish me luck!

I got a good bit accomplished today. I went through stuff that got quickly boxed up from the future nursery while DH was prepping to paint it. I sorted through some of it and boxed up 4 big boxes for Goodwill, and 2 big boxes of stuff that I think my Mom might want. (If she doesn't, she can drop it off at Goodwill herself.) I also threw out 2 1/2 big bags of trash.

I ran across a big shoebox of old bank statements that I need to eventually shred when I have time. I'm still amazed at the sheer amount of paper stuff that I'm throwing out. I had at least a whole trash bag of papers from various vacations from the last several years...brochures, park maps, receipts, old tickets, cruise info, etc. Why in the world did I keep this stuff to begin with? :confused3

I have boxes and boxes of toddler toys to go through. We haven't had a toddler in the house in years! I *do* want to keep a few for the kids, but what to keep (?) has been the question. I get emotional and put them away. I'm going to start on the boxes a little at a time. Starting today.

The easiest way I've found is that anything electronic should go, anything classic and sturdy would most likely be a good keeper. Little plastic things just get brittle and broken over time but solid wooden toys are keepers, the Little Tikes stuff is often a keeper depending on what it is and some of the Fisher Price stuff is also a keeper. Like I kept all the boys LT trucks and all the peek a blocks that we have and all the holiday themed Little People stuff. Although I sold off 99% of our Little People collection because it would be way too cumbersome to store.

Anything they've chewed on or possible drooled into should be tossed for sanitary reasons.

Anything missing pieces should be donated or tossed (puzzles too) since those missing pieces are not going to reappear in storage.

Hopefully that helps in breaking the emotional ties to some of the toys. I know it's very hard to get rid of your kids things but you can always take pictures of the toys and write down little bits and pieces about it (like who's fav it was, who gave it to which child, etc) and then just keep a small flip book or memory box with those in them. Easier to relive the memories when you can just grab a box and look at the pics and notes. :goodvibes

anyone watch Hoarders last night? With all those stuff animals covered in bugs?:scared1::sick:

Makes me want to do another stuff animal toss here. We've got a couple hampers full of stuffed animals and the kids only ever play with the most recent. I've also got a big bag of stuffed animals that the kids and DH have given me over the years. They are special to me but it's not like I have a place to display them not sure why I'm hanging onto them. I should probably take my own advice and just take a picture of them and write down a bit about each one.

Thanks! Very helpful advice. :)

I donated an Elmo dancing doll and a Little People VHS and some clothes. I wish I had taken a picture of the doll, but I didn't see your post till just now. I have boxes of this stuff and I know I have all of the pieces, just not in the same box. So I plan to make some room and put the "misfit" toys in a section and try to recover those pieces to make them whole. It would be a shame not to try.

I will probably ask the children what they would like to keep. Sometimes they surprise me with their answers. I asked them about their stuffed animals last year and we donated a large bag of their choosing. We still have way too many, but it was a start. They are not into the "baby" stuff at all anymore, but they do have memories and favorites. :cloud9:

I just got through my youngest's dresser. Holy cow! No wonder I was having a hard time putting his clean laundry away and getting the drawer shut! Half of it doesn't fit him anymore, a quarter was ready for the rag pile, and another quarter was still in good shap and fit him, but was just stuff that he hates or doesn't like the way it feels so he will never wear. Every time I put his laundry away I was just putting the good stuff on the very top layer and jamming the drawer shut. It is SO MUCH NICER now! and eayier to put everything away.

Little bit each day, I keep going. Funny how the in the beginning, there were areas of my house that didn't seem like a problem to me, because there was so much more that was screaming to be cleaned out...but now that I have gotten through the worst of it, the littler things are looking big to me. Like his drawers...as long as I could still get it closed, and the mess was hidden, it didn't seem like a big priority to get to - but now it is a big priority.

Made it through the laundry basket of paper that was a "keeper" today! It is all sorted out. I have several stashes of paper in various different places, so this will be an ongoing chore. I know NONE of you can relate! LOL. Eventually, I'll get it all in the same place and re-establish a paper system.

Sold what I posted on Craigslist yesterday, listed one more thing today. I think I will make it a goal to find and list at least one thing a day on Craigslist. I have quite a few sell-worthy items, but to deal with it all seems overwhelming. One a day seems like a good goal.

Tomorrow, I'm hitting the big bad bedroom upstairs. There's little furniture, but from all the moving around me did earlier in the school year...there's not too much floor showing with all the stuff! Everything just got shoved into that room! Ugh.

I'm just now getting motivated to do this. I always watch hoarders on A&E (or is it Bravo) and end up going through some of my "stuff" afterwords. :rotfl:

Ugh. I just spent 2 hours with DD in her room picking up the miscellaneous pieces of 'stuff'. Granted I can now see the floor, but it's so frustrating b/c her room is so tiny, I'm not sure where it all fit. Oh, and why do kids need to save every piece of paper, every extra button, every shoebox? We filled a garbage bag full and I know I helped her deep clean her room not that long ago. :confused3

I really, really need to go through the happy meal type toys and other small miscellaneous pieces, right now they're sitting in one box, but every one is her favorite (according to her). Guess that'll be a job for when she's at school. We don't even eat out that often, where does it come from? Thankfully Target has the pink totes I like to use to sort her toys on sale this week, at least that way I can pretend I'm organized. :rotfl:

I didn't feel well today, but I did work on the toiletries and medications in the linen closet some this evening, as well as 2 big boxes of assorted toiletries that were sitting elsewhere. I ended up throwing out a big trash bag of stuff that was old, expired, nearly empty, etc.

I forbade DH to buy any further OTC medicine, especially cold medicine. We had 14 (yes, 14) partial boxes of cold medicine, most of which were expired. He's guilty of buying all but 2 boxes of those (the type I take). Oh, and don't ask who bought the 5 bottles of Chloraseptic spray. :rolleyes1 More is not always better. :sad2:

I haven't been on in a while, but I have been doing TONS of destashing and wanted to celebrate. It's reading week here, and since I'm a teacher I have had a few days off, so I cleaned through the front entrance closet (one bag to charity, plus a few items to my younger sister and boxed up for the next garage sale), finished my room/scraproom (3 bags to goodwill, 1 big box and another bag to sell, one box to sister, 1 bag to trash), and the laundry room (two giant bags to trash). Tonight I started the main bathroom as well, and am already AMAZED by the amount of stuff I have. People, PLEASE stop buying me lotions! (coincidentally, anyone know how long they last)?

Just an idea for anyone with kids who are trying to get rid of books but aren't planning on selling them for whatever reason - talk to a teacher; my sister just went through her bookcase and donated three giant boxes to my classroom. Not for libraries, but I try to keep books all over my room so kids always grab a book in the morning and when they are done work. There is everything available; comics, "easy", series, novels, non-fiction, everything. And bonus - you know that at least some kids will for sure like them! I had the last box sitting on my desk in the morning before class started and I had a line-up of fifth graders and a waiting list of grade 7 and 8 students waiting for books before they even went onto the shelves. It was like Christmas for some of them. Plus, it got them out of the house! Win win!

I made it through half of the junk room. I really need to collect all the bags of paper for recycling and get them to the school bins. I need to sit in front of a good girlie movie with my paper shredder. I have sold and listed a few things on craigslist. I'm meeting one buyer at Half Price Books where I'm taking more books.

I've been married for almost 2 years now... I've kept all my bridal shower/wedding cards in a box, I felt bad throwing them out but I just don't know what to do with them... I got a cute scrapbook and taped them into it tonight and *duh* I didn't realize how thick the book was when I was done and it wouldn't shut, so I just yanked them all out. What should I do with them? I don't want a whole box of wedding cards, is it okay to throw them out? I will probably keep a few special cards, but do I really need all of them forever?

You don't need to keep them forever. Pick out the ones that mean anything. Perhaps someone actually wrote something meaningful and didn't just sign their name. If this means something to you, and you get warm fuzzies rereading it, then I would suggest that you get a nice keepsake box. I'm thinking a cool trunk-like looking type decorative thing. Designate this as the place that you keep these types of things. It is what I have done for these special momentos. Then, when you are in that mood, you can sit and read through some of the things in the box and smile and remember. Otherwise, seriously, throw them in the recycle bin at your local school or library, it's a fundraiser for them and they get money for the paper in those bins.

Yesterday,

Threw out 4 stained and nasty T-Shirts

Put 2 Shirts in the yard sale pile

Put 5 VHS tapes and 1 DVD into the yard sale pile (will put more in when I watch more DVD's)

Got rid of some old cardboard boxes that were hanging around (not useful for anything because they were small and riped)

Sold another 70 comic books

Hopefully today I will be able to get rid of a few more things:goodvibes

The kids and I had a lot of activities this week, so even the little things that I've been staying on top of went downhill. How is it that when we are barely home, there are things that happen at the house that need to be cleaned up? The ratios seem all out of whack! :confused3

Hoarders pushed my buttons again this week...those stuffed animals! We don't have many, but I'm ready for them to be all gone. My poor little 8 year old hasn't watched the show and can't figure out why all of a sudden I'm giving those animals the evil eyeball. On a different note, I have uncovered a Hoarder tendency I didn't know I had. I've been bringing home copier paper boxes to pack stuff up in and have been doing so. But, and believe me, I know this sounds crazy, I realized I was trying to save the ones that were in the best condition. For WHAT? :scared1: Craziness!

I have been destashing as well. Forget what I have postd and what I have not, :lmao:
So far today I have a trash bag full of books, some Halloween decorations, a back support, forget what else but the "cats room" is looking better!
I took Wednesday as a vacation day and got rid of 3 boxes of Christmas stuff.
The super duper house decorating days are gone, our boys are now 18 and nearly 16:scared1:

I am having such a hard time getting rid of Disney stuff! Such as reciepts from suvies from our trip in 2004!, maps of the parks; we have been 6 times  I think we know our way around LOL... So please send me some pixie dust to be able to get rid of all the "paper" from Disney:hippie:

How are you doing destashing on this Saturday?

I donated large bags of stuff every day last week. :) That's my goal and I'm sticking to it. I debated long and hard over some drapes. They were up for about a year, still in almost new condition. They were a heavy material in a deep burgundy. Really nice. I couldn't decide if I'd need them again. Then I thought I am over my burgundy phase. I'm leaning towards lighter colors now. But someone else might be in a burgundy phase. So out they went.

Right now, I'm working on ridding our home of excess kid clothes and shoes. I'm taking a bunch of stuff to a consignment store. I just know the kid shoes are multiplying. I have shoes coming out of my ears! Feels good to get rid of the boxes of stuff!

As soon as I feel a bit better I am going to go through our clothes. We have a lot that never get worn anymore and I am overrun with them!

Dawn
