Who is destashing in 2010?

Mafibisha-
don't delete those files. They are always there, but someone has set your computer to show them. What operating system do you have?

We are getting rid of everything that we haven't looked at, touched, or used in the last 5 years. If we get calls from GW, VV, or Amvets I always say yes to have them pick something up. That way I'm forced to get rid of stuff on a deadline. One is coming tomorrow and 2 are coming next week. Goodbye junk!

This week I am backtracking a bit; previously de-stashed areas needed to be looked at again; but of course they are taking much less time on the second pass through.(My desk seems to accumulate paper no matter what :) )

I already started deleting those files, so whats going to happen? :scared1:
And we have Windows XP. I think. Oh boy, is this going to be awful? :scared1:

Open a folder on your desktop.go to the tools menu, and then folder options. Under the view tab, check 'do not show hidden files and folders.'' Hit ok. close it and look around and see if that worked.

Would you believe I am actually looking forward to having the time this weekend to get more stuff together to get rid of?! :rotfl:

I have been going through things here and there and trying to toss paper trash as it comes in the house. I'm not doing very well with the paper trash though. To quote those people on Hoarders "it's so overwhelming!".

So while I am making attempts to deal with the paper clutter, I am focusing more on things that I can get a handle on. ;) I have a bookcase and half sorted through and removed a bunch of books that I've already read and see no reason to hang onto since they aren't books I'd actively encourage my DD's to read. (aka romance novel junk books!)

I have gotten all our wall pictures framed and I ordered the hanging hooks so I hope those arrive by the weekend so I can get help from the kids to get everything hung. I tossed a bunch of picture folders from various character meals and portrait studios and condensed everything remaining in them down to just one single folder. I'm thinking one of those acid-free photo boxes for sizes 8x10 would be perfect but I just need to find someplace that carries those.

As a side note, I'm not sure how everyone else stores their memento's from different trips, but we put everything in one of those photo storage shoe boxes. Each trip has its own box and that way we can go back and look at all the little 'things' that we collect along the way (maps, FPs, switch passes, stickers, pressed pennies, even those epcot masks fit if you remove the stick) and they are all in one place, contained and sorted by trip. You can get those boxes in all sorts of colors and designs to match most any room decor. Anyway just my organizing tip of the day (month? year? LOL!).

Isn't that the point of weekends?

Can't wait until Sunday! :thumbsup2

I totally agree! Sunday night is our trash night and I was so disappointed there wasn't more to take out this week. This Sunday will be better!:rotfl:

Thanks, thats helping! :goodvibes

Also, do you or anyone know about de-fragmenting your computer? Supposedly it condenses files - VOILA - DESTASHING of the computer files!!;)

But how do you do it, and how often *should* you do it?

Also, how often do you empty your trash bin on your computers?

OK- I have a challenge for this weekend because it's what I know I need to do.

Flat surfaces in the Master Bedroom! Dressers, entertainment centers if you have a TV in there, night stands, ETC!
Go for it!!!

Oh yeah- I set up a reward for myself, too. When the WHOLE house is destashed I'm treating myself to a Lands' End sheet set- which I totally want but have a hard time paying full price for.

Im joining up... I have already this month cleaned out my closet, our hall closet, and soon to be nursery room and got ird of two trash bags of clothes, tableclothes etc, a old tv (was DH from when he lived with his parents it sat around for over 3 years in our house), old computer chair, a box of miscellous trash, and a analog antena. Today I am doing my lower Kitchen cabinets (Tops got done last summer and havent added anything.) and organizing them and the toy box(I do childcare and the toys that the kids have not played with but once since I start with them are gone). This weekend we are going to do the soon to be nursery closet and our office closet and reorganizing them. We dont have a attic or basement so we only have the closet for space. I do have extra movtiation to finish because we need the space for our soon to be lil girl when she arrives and I want to also be completely organized before she gets here. So out with the old to make way for the NEW princess.:lovestruc

I wanna say tho that I do clean out my closet at least 2 a year anyway when the seasons change and when I do that I go through all the extra papers that have been collected and purge that too. I am one of people who cant stand a lot of extra things sitting around the house.

Anyone have an attic ? Ours has lots of room to save things but what to keep?

We have an older tv (but digital ready) fans, misc. stuff that will be great for a dorm when oldest ds starts college next year.

But other stuff, I'm not so sure.

If its an important item potentially, I don't want to toss it, but how do I avoid an accumulation of other *might be needed* stuff? How do y'all decide?

Think about how difficult the item will be to replace. If it's fairly easy/cheap to replace, I pass it on.

The more I destash, the more likely I am to get rid of something, though. It just feels so good to have all that empty space!

I agree with this! If you know you can find it again at GW, a yard sale, etc. cheaply, I'd get rid of it unless you are absolutely positive he can use it. Based on my experiences, I have only gotten rid of 2-3 things ever that I really regret giving up. More often, I have things that I have hung on to thinking maybe I could use this, but never do.

I cleared off the computer desk today & went through a big pile of papers. Still need to work on paper clutter but at least it's contained & not seen.

Happy to report that week 2 of the bedrooms are still in order! I have been putting away the laundry as DH brings it up, instead of letting it pile up & get overwhelming like I did last fall. The hot spots are staying clear & the kids have not been around enough to mess up their rooms. The main floor looks ok, I could have someone stop over easily though the dog hair needs to be vacuumed up AGAIN.

DD's party is Sunday night & I need to vacuum, have the kids put away a few toys in the basement & clear off the kitchen counter clutter. Otherwise, we are ready to decorate!

so happy I did this --- since I can't actively destash at my parents house (mine is done, I think!) since school is starting, I'm so glad my house is neat and organized and I hope it stays this way!!!

I will definitely take up this challenge - it's my goal for the weekend, too! :goodvibes

My desk is in my bedroom so the paper clutter can get overwhelming.

Let's get it done! :thumbsup2

I'm in for this! And, apparently, I am continuing my "get rid of Christmas" plan. DH and DS's did nothing all week, while I worked. :headache: So, between planning next week's lessons, hitting the library to pick up my books that are on 'hold', and cooking, I know what needs to be done.

I'm for this too! I actually started doing some of that yesterday since it was trash night and I had a bunch of things to toss.

I also finally got through sorting my bookcases and DH dropped off the books at half priced books. Mostly romance novels that I got rid of so not a lot of money received but I believe he said they gave him $26 for it all. It was 2 rubbermaid bins worth and 90% of those were bought at the library sale for a nickel each anyway. So I'd guess that we might actually have made a little money on those books! ;)
