Who is destashing in 2010?

Hi! I live just north of Monroe and was wondering what bookstore you take your books too. I would love to find somewhere to take my 5 boxes of books! Thanks :)
Hi! I take them to a bookstore in downtown Monroe called The Book Nook! I love that place! The owner is so nice and she will let you know if she can sell your books or if you should just throw them in the "freebie" box. Hope that helps! The phone number for The Book Nook is (734) 241-2665. I live in the city of Monroe. It's nice to know that a fellow "disser" lives so close! HTH!

Mrsbornkuntry, great job on your boy's room!

I've had busy days lately so I've been de-cluttering on a small scale. I cleaned out a desk drawer while I was watching TV. I cleaned out the "junk drawer" while something was cooking. Every little thing helps, though.

I just wish Craigslist wasn't so slow right now. It's understandable given the time of year, but it's frustrating when you just want stuff gone NOW.

Flylady has some rules to keep you on track. One is keeping your sink clean and shiny and free of dishes. That way, the dishes don't pile up. (since you are a newlywed and it is just you and your dh, you probably don't understand this, but as a mom of 4 kids, I totally do. Within 1 or 2 meals with 6 people eating, your entire kitchen can become a disaster zone if you can't get dishes right in the dishwasher because you can't rinse them because you left a pot in there or something. Then you get defeated and feel like you just can't keep up on the kitchen, because it gets messy too fast. (obviously I've been there)

The other big rule is to get up, shower do hair and make-up and dress completely including lace up shoes. Again, if you are working or still in school, this might be a no-brainer...but when you are a stayhome mom or retired or something.and you have nowhere specific you need to be, and the days run into each other with nothing special about any one of them...then it is easy to fall into a bad pattern of getting up and thinking you will start doing housework in your pj's and barefeet. Things go slower and it is easy to get depressed and just decide not to go out for the day or do anything for the day. Again, I totally understand this one because for about 14 years I always had a small one at home with me and I fell in to disaray around the house and myself.

The sink thing is actually a problem for us even though there is just us two adults. Our goal for the new year was to have the sink emptied at night before we go to bed. We have a dishwasher, and for the most part we are good about rinsing the dishes and putting them in there right away... but there there are times when it is full, or needs emptied. We don't put plastic or big items (baking sheets, pans, pots, etc.) in the dishwasher so it seems like the sink is always full of dishes to be washed!

I can see where the getting ready and putting shoes on deal would work, but for me, it never would... I work full time and go to school full time so I clean when I have time, which is usually late at night.

we just took our trash out to the curb since trash day is tomorrow... wow, the trashmen are going to hate us! Since its just the two of us and the come twice a week, we usually only have 2 bags max in our giant can. Hubby is afraid they aren't going to take it all, but I don't know. It's not THAT much, but it is a lot more than we usually have!

Thanks so much! I am in Brownstown, about 15 minutes minutes from you. My kids dance at a studio in Monroe so we are there 3 days a week!

I am in!

I think i always read this thread title so fast...somehow i was thinking it was about stashing money away..something i cant do : )

But i think i can manage minimum of one bag of stuff a day to get rid of. I just started in the kitchen and bag number #1 is filled.:thumbsup2

LOL I always read it as DETASSLING.

Argh- fell off the wagon. Just TOO tired to work on the living room after all. I DID forget to mention though that DH started filing paperwork last night all by himself. This stuff's contagious.

I thought I had made great progress but the more I do the more I see that needs done!

Thank-you! I've been doing some of the smaller scale things, too, such as cleaning out the entertainment center to make room for new dvds and Wii games while I'm watching a show and tonight I cleaned off my desk while helping my kids with their homework.

I did finish the big boys' room today, too, in the nick of time. I was just putting the vaccuum away when my oldest two got home from school.

My goal for tomorrow is to clean out my linen closet, under the kids' bathroom sink and the upstairs hallway/alcove place where we have a long bookshelf and plastic shelving full of board games. It sounds like alot, but all of those spaces are pretty small and decluttered, I just want to get the bits and pieces straightened up and the shelves dusted. Then my upstairs will be done and I can move downstairs to my bedroom.

I am so on board with this! Our volunteer fire dept takes any and all donations for their huge fourth of July yard sales all through the year. I would know I'm co chair for this event. This is our big fundraiser for the year and it brings in a lot of money each year. I am more than willing to give them all my clutter if it means we can buy new equipment to protect my husband better when he's at a fire!!!

Thanks for lighting a fire under me to get started!!!

I'm in...we moved into this house in July and still have mountains of junk in boxes. DS cleaned out half the garage yesterday so today I'm hitting the guest room and throwing out junk then moving on to the mountain in the foyer downstairs.

Hope it's not too late to join in! I just found this thread a couple days ago and wanted to read through it all before I posted, haven't gotten through yet.

Anyways, I have a ton of stuff to go through! AGH! My house is so cluttered it makes me sick when people come over, especially my dad. I am a stay at home mom and my dad always hassles me about what I do all day because my house is usually pretty messy.

I really do stay busy. :surfweb: LOL!

Anyhow, I have a hard time staying focused, so I am going to try to do one thing per day (clean out drawer, cabinet, etc...).

I just cleaned out DS shorts drawer (getting ready for a spring consignment sale) and found 13 pairs of shorts that don't fit him! That is way too many, we do live in TX, but SHEESH! :laundy:

Thanks for the motivation!

Cleaned out my DVD cabinet last night and packed up almost 40 DVD's for my niece and her daughters. Felt GOOD!

I didn't get to bake a couple of days ago like I'd planned. Since it's snowy here today baking sounds nice so I plan on doing that. In between recipes I plan on cleaning out at least 2 cabinets and the drawer where all of my dish towels are. I got some new dish towels for Christmas and some of mine are yucky so they need to be tossed.

Destashed freezers! Big job! Today we're making our way into the garage to organize, pitch, and take an inventory of the storeroom.

My goal is to be able to put my car back into the garage this weekend. That means the bins of holiday decor need to find a good home!

I love this thread. I have been on a decluttering mission since last summer. Sadly, my sister lost her battle with cancer. The great news is that my 16 year old nephew is now under my guardianship and living with us.
The bad news is that my sister was seriously a major hoarder. If you have seen the A&E show, you can imagine what her apartment looked like. So cleaning out her place was a horrific experience for so many reasons especially during the grieving process.
In preparation of his moving in, I spent time cleaning out the garage and house. I cannot believe how much "stuff" was accumulated. And I have been cleaning more and more out ever since. My neighbors keep asking us when we are moving because the piles being donated to AMVETS monthly are of a significant size. Part of it is some of my Sister's stuff that we just didn't have the time or energy to go through at the time and part of it is just extra stuff we don't need.

It probably helps to also say that my Mother lives with me (two time breast cancer survivor who also has a VERY hard time parting with stuff...another with hoarder tendencies....but she is slowly decluttering her room) along with my two sons.

Last weekend I went through the kitchen cabinets which are floor to ceiling on one wall and more than enough cabnitry to house kitchen needs. I ended up throwing out so much food that expired a while back. I organized all of the cabinets and have the food sorted for use. We will not be buying replacements until we use most of what is in the cabinets. I had to ban Mom from going to the 99 cent store daily and spending $20 ("But everything is such a bargain") IT IS NOT A BARGAIN IF IT GETS THROWN OUT!

So.... I have put the family on a budget and we are doing a good job so far.
It is really nice to read the other posts here to get support.

So I tossed out some ratty dish towels today. Now I can get the drawer closed again. I got a new set of plastic containers for Christmas so I went through that cabinet and tossed out all the containers and lids without matches. I also cleaned out the medicine cabinet.

When Dh gets home tonight we're supposed to go through our dvds, cds, and wii games.

I'm in. I want my garage back.:thumbsup2 Over the past couple of years I have come to terms with my pack rat mentality. I am now ready to let things fly out the door. I got a good start in 09 and intend to keep it up this year. I can now walk around my house without having to follow a certain path. My first goal is the garage. Then the basement. Eventually I will finish the main floor.

Whoaa, cleaned out under my bed today. Surprised I didn't suffer an asthma attack. I do think that in doing so I have resolved a large part of my odd sock problem :)

I lost steam a bit in the kids room mostly because I've gotten to the point where I need them to tell me what they want and don't want and try on clothes, and neither of them will stay put for more than 3 minutes. So, I'm diapointed in my lack of progess in there, but I am just forcing myself to get a little done in there each day, and not let it keep me from attacking other parts of the house.

I'm trying to gain the energy and courage to tackle my closet tomorrow. I have SO much in there that can go, but I hold on to as a security blanket. For some reason, if I have a closet full of clothes that I never wear and couldn't even fit into, I feel safe like I have a full wardrobe. I think I'm scared that if I really get rid of everything that I could get rid of..that there will be about 4 shirts and 3 pairs of pants in the whole walk-in closet and I will feel bare and have the need to go buy lots of clothes. I don't want to buy lots of clothes at the size I'm currently at because I want to lose weight, and well you all know this cycle of thinking. I really need to prepare mentally before getting in there.

Talulabelle,

I just got past that point myself. I actually was stunned how little there WAS in my closet that fit (and I think DH was a little, too.)

Honestly, it felt good to take control back from the closet! I decided that when I DO lose the weight, I will reward myself with clothes that fit. I bought myself a few pieces to get me through til then-and I'll be honest, I did save a few things I love, but I boxed them up and took them out of the closet so I can easily see what I DO have to choose from in the morning.

I LOVE him!! I can't seem to find that show anymore. Keep going everyone!!

I put stuff in the closet under the steps today, put away the stuff in the laundry baskets that needed to go to different floors & cleared out some areas in the garage. The bedroom level looks awesome & has been maintained all week. The basement is done except for paperwork in closets & all my photos. :scared1: That is a year long project in itself!

I moved a little shelf to the office for my work projects and cleared off the top of my desk shelf of dusty papers. Bonus - I found the paper with the router password! I want to switch internet providers but was afraid to until I knew I had that info in case that changes something. I have been piling the little straggler holiday items I'm running across on the counter to pack away tomorrow.
