DznyFan: Here's what I recommend for wearing your hair curly - this is what I do. Use a minimum of products, too much will weigh down the curls. The anti-frizz shampoo and conditioner, or ones for curls, are an excellent idea. Use just one product in your hair. At home I use a mousse, I think it by Garnier Fructis, and sometimes I will mix in a little bit of a styling creme - I'll rub the two together in my hands before applying. In FL a gel seems to work better, must be the humidity difference. Anyway, let your hair dry about 1/2way before applying the product, and then use just a little bit. Rub it between your hands and work it in starting in the back of your head at the ends - you don't need much at the roots. Don't brush it, just sort of finger-comb to distribute the product. To get defined curls, take 1/2 to 1 inch chunks of hair and twirl them into little ropes. At the top of your head, take chunks from the right side and lay them over to the left, and take chunks from the left side and lay them over to the right, so the chunks sort of criss-cross. This will help build some volume into the curls. To dry, either use a diffuser attachment on your hairdryer (on low) or just use the low setting and keep it kind of far away from your head. It will take a while to dry this way, but it'll keep the curls from going haywire. Kind of gently scrunch the twists with your hand as you dry - keyword here is gently. Use your hand like a little "cage" to keep the twists in place. They will kind of untwist as they dry, and turn into nice little curly pieces. You don't have to dry the hair all the way, in fact it usually works better if you leave it just slightly damp, to where it looks dry but feels a little dewey. Finish with a blast of air on your dryer's "cool" setting - this will help set the curl so it won't undo and frizz out. Spritz with a light-hold hairspray and you're good to go!
This is the way a stylist showed me how to wear my hair curly, and when I actually have the time to do it, it works great! Of course a good cut makes a world of difference, but I haven't had one of those in years. Curly hair can be very hard to get the layers to lay just right - make sure your stylist has curly hair or they just won't "get" it.
Hope that helps you! Curly hair can be such a pain... but when it works, it really WORKS!
