I think at some point in the history of DVC you could obtain direct benefits with just a 25 point contract.
It costs them money to give direct benefits…. they need a minimum profit margin to justify those ongoing costs.
Yeah once they raise it they aren't going to go back. Direct benefit minimum is a vastly different situation than changing the min point add on for existing members.
Yes. There was no distinction between direct and resale until 2011, and free valet parking was gone long before that (when Disney outsourced valet services). The 2011 restrictions applied only to the points themselves, which couldn't be used to book Disney cruises or certain other negligible things.
at that point why not just go for the full 2000? Maybe they already had 400 points...

When I first read it, I thought maybe it was a business that bought it for an employee benefit/nice write off. I suppose there could be a large family that wants to spend several weeks at a time every year. How much does that even cost? And MFs?
I think we have to admit that the economy is extremely robust and even when pockets of the economy are doing poorly, there's still tens of millions of Americans that will always be doing extremely well with significant amounts of money available for leisure travel and other luxuries.
But also, could be someone that thinks they need the flexibility to book a couple two-or three-bedroom units for a week+ during peak seasons, and their math was really that simple. Not incredibly hard to imagine a wealthier grandparent type that wants to put an anchor on the family calendar that says: every year we are all going to Disney World as a family, the rooms are already booked!
Interesting thoughts. My mind immediately went to someone who has so much money, they don't care about a $250k+ purchase price and $15k+ in annual dues. But, then I think to myself, if you have so much money, that those numbers are basically meaningless to you, why would you be buying a timeshare in the first place instead of just paying for what you want every year.
I would just buy a house near disney and rent it out when I was not using it.
It is fun to imagine all the people who would want 1600 points in a single contract at a single resort! Grandparents wanting to plan the yearly family trip for a big family. Wealthy people for whom all of this is just a rounding error to their bank accounts. I'm trying to think of others. Edit to add: just look at the points chart. That's only 11-ish days in a Grand Villa at the Riviera over Christmas/New Years timeframe. If that's the type of room you thought you needed at that time of year, 1600 points doesn't go as far as you'd think at the premium DVC resorts.

Funny how different peoples tastes are. I’ll stay at FWC but LL is what I’m looking forward to…in my mind it’s going to be epic and beautiful. “Monstrosity” made me do a double take lol
April 2016 is when a member needed to purchase "any direct points" outside of grandfathered resale points to get member benefits.
