Who has a Kindle? (wireless reading device)

It's probably a good idea to turn off the cellular connection (the switch is on the back) unless you're downloading a book to get the best battery life.

I figured it out. However, I can't remember my password :confused3 so I can't get logged on. It is a rather pita to try and get things entered though... I doubt very highly I will use it much to surf.... and it DOES quickly drain the battery....
Cool to know you can get on line though :)

I got my Kindle in two days, but that is because I have Amazon Prime.

ARRGH. So do I. I have Amazon Prime. I ordered it on 11/4. It still says that it will arrive 11/25-11/28. That's ridiculous.

Okay, I have a couple of more questions....I hope you don't mind answering them.

There are times that I need to reference to the beginning of a book I'm reading. It may be that I forgot something or it's a complicated book and I just can't remember what happened. In a "regular" book I can flip back and kinda remember where that section was. How hard is this to figure out on the Kindle?

Also how fast does it turn the pages? I'm not a very patient person ;) If it takes forever I'll be really frustrated.

Also does anyone know what the new version will look like?

I want to order one soon for myself but I know these things will bug me.

TIA,
Deb

I just got finished reading my first book on my new Kindle. I wanted to reference an earlier part of the book and was a little annoyed that I couldn't search by keyword. Perhaps there is a way to do this that I'm not aware of, but it wasn't easy for me to find (in like a second, I'm impatient that way). I also admit I didn't read the user guide completely either so maybe there's a way I'm not aware of.

If you think you might want to reference a part you're reading later, you can bookmark it or even leave notes which is nice. Of course, sometimes, you might not realize which parts will be important later so you'll have to find it yourself like I did. One good thing is Kindle books have what they call locations, similar to page numbers and you can go to any section by typing in the location number. You may have to hunt and peck a bit, but it beats scanning through every page.

About the page turning, that's really my only beef with the Kindle. I expected it to be instant but it takes a second. I adjust by hitting the next page button as I began the last line of the current page and that works fine.

What I love so much about the Kindle is the satisfaction of being completely surprised by what I'm reading. I'm one of those skimmers and I always spoil endings for myself and with the Kindle, it's not as easy to do that.

Deb,

There is no new version available, and Amazon has said "no new Kindle before 2009." Anything you might read or hear about is pure speculation, so don't pay attention to anyone who says they know about a 2.0 version of Kindle. Believe me, as soon as there is real information it will be posted everywhere.

Page turning - the screen essentially has to "re-arrange" itself in order to form the new letters on the next page. To do this, the screen goes "black" for a second, then the new letters form and flash up. Some people have reported finding it irritating - almost everyone reports that after a few days playing with it they stop noticing the "flash" and can get to the point where they hit the "Next Page" button about a sentence or so before they finish the current page. It takes about that much time to read the last sentence. In other words, if I am reading and I am on the second line from the bottom, I hit the next page button and I have time to read the last sentence while the page is getting ready to change. By the time I am ready for the first sentence on the next page, it is there. I know it sounds weird the way I am describing it but it's just one of those things you'll have to play with. I haven't heard anyone say the flash bothered them long - term. In my experience, it takes about one second to change the page. I mean that literally, btw!

There are three ways to find something earlier in the book, but none of them are the "flipping" method. If you know the location number (similar to a page number) of the passage you are trying to find, or can guess something nearby, you can search by location number. If you know what chapter it was in, you can search by chapter. And, you can search by name of character or even by a specific word and pull up all the references to that character or word.

lulu, I just searched for the word "barn" on my Kindle - because I have been reading The Story of Edgar Sawtelle and I knew the word "barn" must be in that book in several places. The search brought up a list of 11 items I have on my Kindle that have the word "barn" somewhere. It also gave me a choice to search Wikipedia or the Web for the same word. When I selected The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, it gave me 53 pages of options - every time the word "barn" is used, sorted by location number (earliest reference first, and so on.)

I just hit the "Search" bar and then typed in the word. Try it with yours and see if it gives you what you were looking for.

Thanks Liz. It worked! I was looking for the search feature in the menu, but d'oh! - there it was as it's own button on the keyboard (and quite large, I might add)!

Thanks Liz. It worked!

Woo Hooo!!! Isn't technology amazing????:rotfl:

The only thing I do miss with a paper book is that you had the ability to remember how far along in the book you were - I was always a pretty good judge of where something was by looking at the top of the book and guessing where to open it. You can't do that with a Kindle!!

Thanks Everyone!

You answered my question and all seems like it's pretty fixable! Thanks so much. DH told me to go ahead and order one :) My first hesitation was using the library for free and second was DH. I didn't think he would go for it. I might order it now, but I know it won't be here by the time our vacation comes at Thanksgiving week. I might wait until January, but it's doubtful...lol

Oh, Deb, go ahead and order it!!! You never know when the backlog from Oprah will clear - it could be here sooner than you think!!!!

woohoo! Mine is being prepared for shipment.... FINALLY. :)

I find it funny that when Oprah endorses ANYTHING people buy it. I was planning on getting one for ages, but I only made the choice to buy because of the $50 discount, and not because she endorsed it.

Thank goodness it's shipping, PD!!! I was beginning to have anxiety attacks about it.:rotfl:

The whole Oprah thing is interesting. I hope her endorsement means publishers are going to continue to provide content for the long haul. Also, it would be really nice if she did some more special offers on books she liked - maybe an "Oprah bundle" on some of the ones she's featured in the past.

Oooo...that would be a great idea! I'm getting closer to jumping the gun and not waiting until January!

PD, seeing Oprah is how I got started on the whole Tivo thing. I've heard friends talk about, but it wasn't until I saw it on Oprah that we actually got it years ago. Do I get everything Oprah gets?...nah...don't have enough money...lol

The dots at the bottom of the screen indicate approximately how far along you are but it's still not quite the same.

I predict an increasing backlog as the holidays approach too. Last time that happened it took 6 months to get it back in stock  I really doubt that'll happen this time but I can see waitlists of a month or 6 weeks

Kindle was one of MY favorite things LONG before it became on of Oprahs  Hehe...Oprah is SO behind the times :rotfl:

I know - I've had my Kindle for 5 months now, so I feel like I was trendy WAY before Oprah...:rotfl:

Today for the first time I counted all the little dots at the bottom of the book I was reading to see if I was halfway yet. I've been known to go to the last page, see the location number, and divide by two to see what the halfway point was, but I was too lazy to do all that finger pushing today, so I counted instead. Woo hoo, almost halfway done with The Story of Edgar Sawtelle!!!!! (Which I am finding VERY slow, has anyone else read it????)

Yeah, when I heard Oprah was endorsing it, I was relieved I'd jumped on the bandwagon months ago. :rotfl:

Yeah, I have had my eye on one for about a year but couldn't justify the price.... then they lowered the price, I got the Oprah code, and I was given an amazon gift card.... had the planets not all perfectly aligned, I probably would still not have purchased one.

Then again, my hobby - read SICKNESS - is electronic gadgets, so eventually I would have purchased one.

I had no idea what a Kindle was and didn't even open this thread until I saw it on Oprah. I still just thought "Cool!" and forgot it about it after hearing the cost. THEN, some friends brought it up and I got intrigued and watched the Amazon 6 minute clip and went to Oprah's site to reread her segment on it. Bingo!
I ordered it and then went to DH and asked if he had gotten my Christmas gift yet (Duh! No!) so I then told him yes he had and thanks very much. He is relieved and never even asked the price, LOL!
I ordered it Saturday night 11/8 with free shipping and my email predicts receiving it 12/1-12/5. I'm hoping for pixie dust and getting it earlier but happy that I will have it for our WDW trip mid-December. I am spending the wait time putting together my Kindle book list! I was very happy to see some Carl Hiassen books available and I saw on an Amazon Kindle discussion thread that the Sherlock Holmes complete set was available for .80 cents! I plan to have gallon ziplock bags by the hot tub and bathtub, LOL! :thumbsup2
Kindle Watch! :woohoo:
