Who has a Kindle? (wireless reading device)

Happy Kindle Day to those who received theirs!!!!

I am absolutely addicted to mine and it's only been two days! I think it actually forces me to read more, because I can't look ahead to see how many more pages in the chapter. I usually hate books with long chapters, but with this, I can't tell how long the chapter is going to be until I'm well into it, and by then usually I don't want to quit until I finish it. It's also not as easy to read ahead, which I am frequently guilty of doing. And, with all the sites that offer the public domain books for free, I have a feeling I will be reading more of the classics, which is something I have always wanted to do, but just never have.

I also love:love: the basic web access. We don't have mobile wi-fi for our laptop, and now with my Kindle I can have basic internet access almost anywhere. So cool!

I ordered mine last Saturday and it was delivered today! I LOVE IT! Thanks to the OP for starting the thread - and for the discount code! Best Christmas present EVER!
:goodvibes Thanks! I'm happy you're enjoying it as much as I am and the rest of us.

I just love it too.

Hopefully they'll have another discount code. I think I'd like to give this to me for Christmas this year. :)

Have had a Sony Reader (same thing...different company) for a couple of years and love it.

The Kindle has the capacity to download books without needing a computer or iternet access and the Sony Reader is smaller and has many less buttons.
Those are just two of the differences.

I considered switching to the Kindle, but I like the smaller compact size. Also, I am not an impulsive book buyer, so the need to download "on the go" isnt a big selling point.

The Kindle also allows you to subscribe to newspapers and magazines and have them delivered to you machine daily (or monthly ...depending on the publication).

They cost about the same $350ish. Oprah is giving a $50 discount on the Kindle for the next couple days. Go to Oprah.com for the discount code.

I love to read, love taking a book with me everywhere, like taking multiple books on vacation and have run out of storage space for new books at home....so an e-reader has been a really good idea.

Both the Kindle and the Sony Reader have their plusses and minuses.

Look at both and decide which one is best for you.

Good luck.

Walmart has the Sony Reader in it's "Online Specials" section for $258 with free shipping.

Even though the one we bought is a gift for my my MIL, I have the honor (duty) of checking it out so I can show her how to use it. It's charging right now.

I got a Kindle recently! I absolutely love it!! I told my DH that I suspect it will get very expensive though because I have been tearing through books. My DH said that I should enjoy myself and that there are worse habits to have. :cloud9:

At the moment I see the Sony as an also ran. Kind of like the other MP3 players when iPod was still KING of the market. I had the cheapie but still coveted the iPod  and it didn't take all that long for me to cave. :sad2:

I don't doubt that in the predictable future there will be other book readers with all the capabilities and maybe more of the Kindle but I think it's a way off. I looked at a Sony as well. It was about $100 cheaper. I thought the Kindle was worth every penny of the extra $100 and I still do. :thumbsup2

Here's an excellent way to compare the readers currently on the market

Looks like the Kindle smokes the competition.

10 days now... still waiting for mine to ship.... :rolleyes1 any day now, any day.....

I wonder how they determine who gets theirs first..... I would THINK I would get a wee bit of priority here as.....

1. I used an AMAZON.com credit card to pay

2. I actually PAID for shipping

3. I buy lots of stuff from them. Probably make 25 - 35 purchases a year between my wife and I.

We ordered the same day if I remember correctly because we were on the same thread about the Oprah discount. I didn't use an Amazon card. I didn't pay for shipping, and I don't buy much from them. Mine has shipped.;)

I ordered on the 29th and it came on the 3rd or 4th and I got free shipping!

Sigh . . . I really want one of these, but I've decided I'm going to wait and ask for one for my birthday which always corresponds with Mother's Day; thus, I usually get a double-present! As expensive as this is, it'll be a double-present.

The Kindle has some "experimental" features such as a web browser (you can DIS from it!) and (I haven't figured it out yet) it supposedly can show you your location on google maps.

Like a dagger through my heart.... ;)

When you figure it out, can you let me know how you do it? Thanks!

It's worth the wait, you'll see.

Awesome!!

I also like the NowNow in the experimental feature too. You can put in a question relating the anything and they respond to your Kindle and email to you. I got 3 different responses. It's pretty neat.

Really? It can do that? I guess I need to read my manual one of these days. ;) I really like that it can do that. I don't really need it since I can surf the web on my ipod Touch, but it is still nice to know. :)

I got my Kindle in two days, but that is because I have Amazon Prime.

I figured it out. However, I can't remember my password :confused3 so I can't get logged on. It is a rather pita to try and get things entered though... I doubt very highly I will use it much to surf.... and it DOES quickly drain the battery....
Cool to know you can get on line though :)
