And how do you like it? I just ordered one and can't wait to get it. :woohoo:

Just wanted to update this thread to say I finally got it and I LOVE it!!! Anyone thinking of getting one, It's great and so far there is nothing I don't like about it!!

i don't have one but i was looking at it today after wondering again what to do with all the books piling up. Let me know how you like it after you have it a bit. Hope you love it!

I just saw a lady at the other day with one. I always wondered about them.
So me be me I asked. She loves it and said it was the best thing her husband has ever gotten her.

Have had a Sony Reader (same thing...different company) for a couple of years and love it.

The Kindle has the capacity to download books without needing a computer or iternet access and the Sony Reader is smaller and has many less buttons.
Those are just two of the differences.

I considered switching to the Kindle, but I like the smaller compact size. Also, I am not an impulsive book buyer, so the need to download "on the go" isnt a big selling point.

The Kindle also allows you to subscribe to newspapers and magazines and have them delivered to you machine daily (or monthly ...depending on the publication).

They cost about the same $350ish. Oprah is giving a $50 discount on the Kindle for the next couple days. Go to Oprah.com for the discount code.

I love to read, love taking a book with me everywhere, like taking multiple books on vacation and have run out of storage space for new books at home....so an e-reader has been a really good idea.

Both the Kindle and the Sony Reader have their plusses and minuses.

Look at both and decide which one is best for you.

Good luck.

I spend a fortune on books. This is supposed to be a less expensivbe way to get them. But how do you download them? DO you need to be in a wi fi area? And how cheap are the books, because 12 books will cost about 350 right now and the library is free.

Maybe theywill come off the price and I can ask for one for my birthday next year.

I just learned about these yesterday. I think its really cool. I want one when the price goes down.

my son has one, and he really enjoys it.

I have a Kindle and I absolutely love it. I have always been a huge book fan. I've always found joy and comfort from having books around me.

But I'm also an electronics freak.

So along comes Kindle. I'm torn. I love books but I love tech toys. This is a combination of both.

I admit, it didn't take me long to give in. When the Kindle arrived, I cleaned out my bookshelves of any and all books that weren't absolutely dear to me (Half Price Books was happy to give me a few bucks for them!).

The Kindle is brilliant. I have as many books as I want, but in one very compact device. I can get a book no matter where I am (as long as it's within cell phone range). It's easier on my eyes than regular ink and paper and I can enlarge the fonts to make it even better (I'm 39 but my eyes think I'm 90!). I like that I can subscribe to newspapers, magazines, whatever I want. Brilliant.

And the best part? Saving trees. When I walk into a bookstore now, I see a forest. I can only imagine all of the trees that were destroyed to make those books. And the fuel from the trucks to haul the books there.

My dream was to someday own a small book store. I've given up on that dream, but I do feel better about it.

And some will say that the Kindle can't replace the experience of holding a book and cuddling up with it with a cup of hot tea and a warm blanket on a cool Fall evening. I have to say I disagree - it's worked out just perfectly for me :thumbsup2

Now, if I could just find more time to read.... :sad2:

I have one. I LOVE it. Very easy to use and easy to take with me. I love being able to browse the store where ever I am and download books right then. Most are 9.99 and under. GREAT prices for new releases!

Waiting for the new Stephen King to be downloaded......
:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2
LOVE it.

I did use the discount code for 50.00 off. It came to 309.00 w/free shipping.
Things I like about it are you don't need a computer to use it, you can purchase books right from it with them downloading within a minute, you can have paper delivered to it daily so it's there when you wake up, you can look up definition of a word right from it you're not sure of, if you lose it, Amazon keeps a record of your purchases so you can download it again for nothing, it's saves a LOT of paper. So many pluses I can't wait to get it. So happy to hear positive things about it here!!

We have two (my wife and I). We love it! I subscribe to various magazines, newspapers and blogs, all which arrive automatically in the morning (if you have the wireless part on).

Be sure to go to manybooks.net where you can download to your Kindle the 'classics' (books in the public domain) including Shakespeare, Dickens, Twain, etc. You hook the kindle up to the computer in order to do this.

We are going to China soon. While the Kindle will not, of course, be receiving the automatic downloads out of country, we are prepared for the long plane ride. I even have a China travel guide downloaded on the Kindle. I shall also, prior to leaving, have my itinerary transferred to the Kindle (this cost 10 cents; I will email my word-created itinerary to the special Amazon address; after a few minutes, they will then send the itinerary back to my Kindle via wireless.

You may also download audio books and music, although I have not done that.

You purchase them right from the Kindle. You have your debit/CC tied in w/Amazon when you register your Kindle. You don't need wi fi. I think the average new release for it is 9.99.

Newer titles cost $9.99. Some of the older titles (such as the first Twilight book) cost around $6.99. Those in the public domain can cost 99 cents (again, however, go to manybooks.net for those).

thanks for info :woohoo: Another Plus!! LOL
Never thought I'd get this excited about a wireless reading device:yay:

I love mine! I love the fact that when I'm at my daughter's gymnastics class, at the ice rink, waiting for her after school in my car, etc. and I finish reading a book, I can immediately purchase and download a new one. I also like being able to download the first few chapters for free to see if I am interested in the book enough to purchase it. I am reading so much more than I was before because I never seemed to have enough time to go to the library plus I'd have to wait forever if I wanted to read the new releases. It's also cheaper than buying the books brand new even from Costco. My students with learning disabilities are even intrigued by it and it takes a lot to get most of the interested in reading.

Something tells me you can't use this in the bathtub.... ;) That's where I do a lot of my reading. I'm so tempted to buy one but I'm afraid it wouldn't get enough use.

Yes! The ability to 'sample' a book is a real plus and has saved in quite a bit of money (discovering that I did not like the first chapter or two).

For magazines, newspapers and blogs you get a free two week trial.

I'm waiting for them to get it backlit that's my only issue with it currently.

I'm waiting for them to get it backlit that's my only issue with it currently.

That was my issue too... until DH explained why they aren't back lit, and why they likely won't ever be. The reason that they aren't back lit is that to display a back lit page takes a LOT more energy. The way the eReaders work is using ambient light. The places where the page is dark (printed) are actually places where the "reflective surface" is "turned off". The background is really just a reflection of the light around you. Doing it this way allows for MUCH MORE efficient battery use. I think my friend says she can go 7500 "page turns" before recharging.

All that said, it would be nice to read in the dark... The only way around it that I can find is to get a book light. :)
