I think renting is a point that I would normally take but Soon2BEX is feeling more generous now than he will be down the road, I'm thinking.
While we will be doing the divorce this thru mediation, if there becomes a girlfriend involved (and I'm sure there will be) all bets are off & what I am left with from this marriage could be very little at all. Right now he is for buying me a new car, if under $20K & renting an apartment at no more than$1,000 monthly.

At present our house is worth MAYBE $100,000 (market drop, the kitchen & dining rooms are torn out--all remodeling has stopped), our stocks have nosedived.

I don't want to buy now but I feel as if I am behind the 8 ball

I'd LOVE to do yr suggestion of the RV it sounds so exciting & right up my alley!

Jean, I'm so sorry to read you are going through all this. If you want to move every few years, I'll adopt you and put you in my suitcase!

However chances are slim of that so I do have a couple of suggestions:

Greenville, SC
Asheville, NC
Indianapolis, IN
Nashville, TN
Fayetville, AR
Knoxville, TN

I have been to each of these places at some point and love them dearly. They all have things to do but still semi easy to get around and more importantly not priced right out of the bank.

My MIL lives in Monterey, TN and its a really nice smaller community that's somewhat rural. There is shopping within an easy drive (15-30 min) in both Cookville and Crossville. Nashville is about an hour away if you want to get into the city to do anything. While it does get cooler there in the winter, they rarely get snow, and if they do it doesn't last long. Summer will get a bit more hot and humid than in NH, but not as bad as the more southern states. Real estate is very reasonable there too.

No particular ideas on where to live, but I'm thinking you have a couple different options here.

If you like the small town you live in already, maybe you could check at your church to see if you would be able to find someone in a similar situation that you could rent a new place with together-saving you a long distance move.

Is your ex planning on helping to pay for your move? He should! If he wants your house so much and is wanting you to leave it, he should have to fork up the money to make that happen! At the very least be paying alimony/spousal support.

I wish you the best. There are beautiful places all over the US that have small towns in them that are probably a perfect fit. Maybe google a few Chamber of Commerces for a few places and ask them to send you info.

I've never been. My husband's family owned the town's hotel and cafe for years and he's told me about how the town is and was, and it seems it hasn't changed.

As for culture, they have an ice sculpture festival every Winter.

It just always seemed a nice place to live, if ever I was banned for whatever reason from living in Southern California.

Seeing a couple of suggestions for Greenville, SC...when my mother and I were thinking of moving, when I looked for condos, that area came up. If others are suggesting it, that might be worth looking into.

How about Greenville, SC?

We have the BEST downtown, plenty of recreational activities to participate in, and if you are interested in the arts, we have plenty of that too! There are festivals all the time here and in the surrounding areas.

Housing is great, you can get a lot of house for not a lot of money. There are smaller cities on the outskirts such as Simpsonville, Mauldin, etc. Everything is practically at your doorstep, no matter where you live their are doctors offices, shopping and restaurants, etc.

We have a good hospital system, I should know, my 5yo sees seven doctors besides her peds and has had multiple surgeries and hospital stays.

You have the beach a few hours away and the mountains about an hour away.

Lots of retirees that go to Florida, end up here. I think they are called half-backs, lol!

I was going to say GREENVILLE, SC too!!! A beautiful place, lots of outdoors activities, great weather, not too big, a university town (Furman is GORGEOUS and lots of people in the area use it for walking, picnicing, music concerts.....they are even opening up a new retirement place on the grounds of the university), downtown area is adorable and has old historic houses. Prices for real estate is very reasonable, cost of living is great (gas prices are the lowest in the nation) plus there is even a Costco. Can't beat it!!!

I totally think the RV/camper idea is great!

I say travel the country, see all of the sites, drive to where your son will be stationed and visit there a while, stop and meet Dis'ers (you're invited to dinner at my place in CT! LOL)...be FREE!

And while you're vagabonding around the country getting to know where you like best stop in at every museum you find and chat them up. You never know when you'll get a lead for a great job.

Our downtown is the best"est" ever! We have a waterfall that runs through it and a suspension bridge surrounded by beautiful gardens. It is pet friendly and just a walk to the zoo, or shopping and restaurants. We have Fall for Greenville, Artisphere...during the summer we have Shakespeare in the Park and free movie nights...we have a baseball team and artists of different mediums.

There are decent townhomes in the 100,000's and houses just right for a single person or a couple. We also have a Sam's Club AND we just opened one of the largest children's museums!

Atlanta is less than two hours with the aquarium and such, Asheville is about an hour with Biltmore, etc. There are lofts and apts. downtown too! Heck, if I was single, I think I might have a downtown loft!

I can't think of a medical specialty we do not have here, we also have Clemson U., lots of other colleges if you want to take any classes...great shopping...

Even though I am a Florida gal and have lived all over the world (AF officer's brat), I have to say Greenville, SC is just a beautiful part of our country.

If you want to stay in NH, how about looking around Strafford, New Durham, etc. None of those are a far commute to Portsmouth and the seacoast, but tend to be WAY cheaper than living on the coast.

If you're leaving the area, how about Williamsburg VA? When my parents left NH, they went there and loved it. The prices weren't a whole lot worse than NH, and although the summers were hot, the winters weren't nearly as bad as they are up here.

I give my little town a thumb's up for you.
I think you'd like the small town feel and there are some things within walking distance - just not a supermarket.

Hunter's Creek is also a nice area.

My own town aside, the little town I visited once and want to retire in is Lewisburg, WV. Gosh I hope I'm remembering the name right. A little bit hot, of course (little bit! ha!) in the summer, and that's the only time I saw it, but man oh man was it gorgeous.

I've also lived in Spartanburg, SC. I never had a great time in Greenville, but Spartanburg's downtown was being revitalized during my time there, so it might be even nicer now. Best part? If you like receiving chiropractic care, you can go to the chiro college's clinic. It has an awful name for a school in the South (Sherman College...named after the founder's chiropractic mentor...nothing to do with a certain general), but it's a good school (and it's the reason I was in Spartanburg).

What about looking in the Carolinas? If you look about 30min to or more outside a major city in the small towns you can get a house for a really good price. But you would still be close enough to the entertainment you want.

Just a thought.

I have an entirely different suggestion.

Take a year and wander the US. Buy a used RV, get a dog, get a map, sit down and just put stickers on every spot in the US that you might want to visit.

Then go there!

You should get some settlement money out of the divorce, figure out a budget for gas and food over the next year. You can work temp jobs if you decide you want to stay in one place for longer.

You can take a year to find a place AND to find out who you are.

Why burden yourself with a house and a mortgage? Maybe yes, eventually, but maybe you will find out after the end of a year that that's NOT what you want for yourself.

I say go explore the US, give yourself room to breathe, and find out who you are now .

I forgot to mention why I suggested the RV in the first place: FORT WILDERNESS in Disney. It is, IMO, the MOST magical place in WDW. And I don't own an RV. We own at Wilderness Lodge (dvc) and we spend half our vacation goofing off at FW since it's just sooooo wonderful.

If you can push your ex for a lump sum settlement, you'll be free of him instead of having to get him to pay your car payment and mortgage for however long he feels like it...
