Where to find inexpensive wall art?

We built this house 3 years ago, and really changed our style. Previously, we liked the primitive folk art look, but it just doesn't work in this brand-new, modern house. So we're going more modern: the metal sculptures, etc. We really like it!

But we're having trouble finding things for our walls that we can AFFORD! Even Target seems to be greatly overpriced -- I found a beautiful print that I loved there - -for $149!

We're heading out shopping today. Going to try Kirklands. Anywhere else??

I've gotten some beautiful prints -- from calendars! They should be about 90% off right now. I get them matted and framed and you could never tell where I got them. I usually go to book stores for a larger variety.

You should look at places like Kohls, Home Goods and Bed Bath and Beyond. Me and Dfi are looking for stuff right now and I have found most of it at those 3 places. I go about every other week or so and look at their clearance and sale stuff. Try using coupons on top of a sale/clearance price and its amazing how cheap you can get stuff!

I was going to add calendars too. I got a bunch for $1 each at the bookstore last week. Some were page-a-day puzzles (for the car en route to WDW!) but the others were ones I intent to tear apart and frame.

If you are interested in larger peices, I'd try Ebay. You can get some attractive (if not museum quality) prints and paintings cheaply. About $100 for something the size that would go behind a sofa and much cheaper for smaller work.

I don't know if you have an Old Time Pottery store in your area but they have TONS of beautiful wall prints...most for under $100.

Home Goods...also I know it sounds scary but a giant canvas with the colors you want and let the kids go at it!

The other thing based on the description of the house is B&W photos of simple objects close - up.

Ikea has some great modern looking art pieces for cheap. Our house is also modern and we were having a hard time filling a huge wall space where our living room rose to 2 stories. We had a hard time finding anything affordable that would fill the space. We finally found a large rug at Target that filled the space and had all the colors we were looking for. We bought a curtain rod and hung it up like a tapestry. Pretty different and we get compliments on it all the time.

Do you have a digital camera? I just blew up and framed (black $5 frames with matte) pix I took in Morocco at Epcot. Lots of interesting architecture, and even the everyday up close can look so interesting. If you can't go huge, hand a collection of pix together.

Another good idea--don't know how modern your house is or what kinds of furnishings you have, but hang frames together--one very large, then smaller ones inside, with or without pictures.

Interesting baskets, sculptural items, etc. hung in a grouping are more inexspensive than one large piece, but can have the same visual effect.

If you can't tell, I've been thinking about this. I just had my living room painted so I've been looking at blank walls.

I agree with IKEA for modern style art, prints... Also blown up B&W photos are beautiful. Go to snapfish or shutterfly and look at the options for personal creations. There are alot of cool things you can do.

I bought interesting hand made paper at a store that sells art supplies. It had nice texture with an asian feel to it.

Then I went into Photoshop and came up with a bunch of rectangular shapes in varying ranges of opacity and overlapped some.

Picked up a free asian font online and put an image (the fonts had Willow Tree's, bamboo, storks, pagoda's, etc).

Also at the art supply store, I picked up an ink pen that writes in gold leaf ($7.00) and randomely drew gold lines here and there.

The hand made paper made it through my printer with no problem! It came out very artsy, and probably less then 50 cents!

The images below are from Photoshop prior to being printed on the handmade paper and prior to the gold leaf highlights.

Most of my wall art was done by my boys. I purchase a mat and frame and hang their work like I'd hang anything else. If you want poster-sized artwork you can have Kinkos enlarge your kid's work, or for a bit more money you can take a digital photo and have WalMart put it on canvas...they do it complete with digital brushstrokes.

When we moved last summer I realized that what I have on my walls falls into four categories: I: Home Interiors stuff my friend Gina has given me II: Family photos III: Shelves and things we've collected (dalas, Mr. Potato heads, ceramics my kids have made, etc.) IV: Artwork that I've purchased at craft shows or that I've been given.

I used to have big poster-sized artwork, but over the years it gave away to things that have more meaning
