Where do I get a fish extender?

ok.. I have a stupid question....what if you are cruising and not part of a DIS group..you put up one of these extender thigns on your door...does it just hang there and nothing in it? I guess I don't get the whole idea but I am very curious to learn.

The original purpose, from what I understand, is that DIS members come around and leave goodies in your pockets and then you do the same with other DIS cruisers.

I suppose that you could hang one for your family and use it as a message board for each other if you don't have a group of DIS'ers to exchange with.

I saw pictures of these and wondered what they were for!

Love this thread, so infomational. Now I know there is more to plan besides what I need to pack. As you can tell by the earning my ears category by my name, I'm a completely new DISer, but I pick up things pretty quick. Our first cruise (DW and I) will be Sept 25, 2008. A short 3 day, but just enough to get away.

I'm making one for the kids in our family (aw heck, probably for the adults too) and putting in little surprises for them each day.

i was just wondering where the mickey fabric came from???

Here's a photo that I just took of fish extenders that mfabre and I made for our upcoming cruise.

I used the directions linked above. I made my pattern 9" wide by 28" long for the front/back and the felt used as an interfacing. Hindsight . . . I would use 9 x 26" for the felt and not place it at the top so that you could make a casing to run a wooden dowel at the top. The felt makes it too thick, especially if you use flannel for your material as I did.

The pockets were 6" x 9".

I used a 3/8" seam allowance and 1/4" for basting.

The designs on the pockets were iron-ons that I made from clipart that I found online in the Creative Designs forum here at the disboards. The name idea is from Pat in that forum. The "what happens at sea stays at sea is a triplefigs design.

What would I do differently . . . not use black material but matching the red was impossible.

It was really easy!

None of these ideas are original and are a culmination of things I've seen on the disboards in various forums.

What a sad, sad door for a DISer! Where are your decorations!?

You could leave little gifts and such for your own family, I guess. The best thing to do is go to the Cruise Meets forum, find your cruise dates, and start chatting. Get to know your fellow cruisers and join (or start) a fish extender swap. Our upcoming cruise has 3 people delivering each day of the cruise so far!

Check out the cruise meets board and find your group. Even the short cruises have lots going on! It's also a great place to ask questions, as you will get to know a specific group of people, and they you. Plus... it's a lot of fun!!

Momtomari- check out Joann fabrics or walmart they sometimes have Disney
fabrics. You can also do a search on the web.

DS12 had a sewing unit in home ec last year and they made "locker pockets" - organizers to hang in their lockers and hold small objects. For some strange reason, he chose a fabric patterned with fish to make his - not cartoon fish, but real fish, like someone would use to make something for a fisherman. Anyway, we used that as our fish extender. Not exactly Disney-themed, but appropriate for a "fish" extender.

i would say the best bet is just making your own, because ebay can't pesonalize it like you can :)

Most of the posts mention the extender having four pockets. Is that necessary? When I am planning to cruise, it will be solo - so I'm thinking one or two pockets would be all I would need - right?

All of the FE's I made had only two pockets. It was pretty easy to see which gifts were for the kids - and I just let them check it when they can andn went from the room so they had fun seeing what we got.

My mom and I are getting ready to attempt making 5 for our cruise. Here are the directions that we're using as a basis for our pattern. I think we're going to go with 8" wide and 28" long using 4 pockets that about 6" deep.

If we're successful, I'll post back to let you know . . . hopefully with photos.

I tried this link for directions but it has moved. Does anyone know where it went, or have another one?

Thanks!

I just ordered one on EBAY too....it IS customized. You pick patterns, colors, names, etc. The pics look GREAT and I am so excited. It is the 1st real thing I have bought for our cruise prep!
