When you meet someone new do you go by your nickname or given name?

My mother named me Judy, I was named after St. Jude.

Almost everyone in my family and my friends call me Jude. When I meet someone new and they ask my name I always say "Judy". I got to thinking, why not just say Jude, since that's what everyone calls me.

So, let's say your name is Patricia, but you go by Pat. What do you say when someone asks you your name? :confused3

My name is Eden and no one (except DH and sons call me anything else). I would think, though, that if most people called me Edie or something, I'd introduce myself as that.

I used to go by a nickname in certain circles. Always introduced myself as "my real name" and some would in time eventually use the nickname if they knew me well enough.

I only use my nickname (shortened form of my full name), and it's how I introduce myself. I've never been called by my full name by anyone, including my family, except for people who see it on a file (like a doctor). It even sounds strange to me when people say my full name!

I introduce myself as Ruthie Given name Ruth I HATE it I also despise when people I work with for years insist on saying Ruth Is it silly ? Maybe in someone's eyes but it's my name If you introduce yourself as William I wouldn't dream of calling you Bill, Billy, etc So I say go in giving the name you prefer as you may end up knowing this person for the rest of your life and then will have to correct them ...of course this doesn't always work with some people :confused3

my family already knows they better put Ruthie on the death announcement or I will come back and haunt them !

I always introduce myself by my full name, but once people hear others call me MJ, they start calling me MJ, too. I always think it's funny when people I barely know start calling me MJ. Even family/childhood friends have changed from Jo (name growing up and with family) to MJ if they are on Facebook because so many people refer to me by that nickname.

I'm ALWAYS Liz. Except for the doctor's office...if I introduce myself as Liz and I later get Elizabeth, I will remind the person that it's Liz.

I dislike the nickname as it is, but I LOATHE Elizabeth even more. I've tried shortening it to Eliza; I've tried Beth, Lisa, Libby, etc.; I've even tried switching to my middle name (which I really like)...none of them would take.

On the flip side...I called my DH Jason until I realized that his entire family calls him Jay. Now it sounds weird to me when someone calls him Jason - even though it's pretty much my favorite boy's name!

:lmao: I feel your pain Liz, they gave me Elizabeth for my middle name

Always my nickname with friends. As mentioned above, the Dr's and Dentist's office seem to really love using my given name. It irritates the heck out of me. I've tried to ask them to use my nickname, but they always default to the "real" one....multiple times. Ugh. Honestly, it's not the best way to start out a visit. You'd think they would understand that.

I introduce myself by my full name. I do have a nickname, but it is only used by very close friends and family.

Hmm...my first name is 2 syllables, and there are only a couple of people who have called me by the first syllable, which sounds weird as it's really not a name or anything. I am called by my full first name...which can be heard as another name, so I do have to correct people sometimes.

My mom, otoh, has a long (and often mispronounced) first name. She has 2 nicknames; most people use one or the other. One is a common nickname for her name (and the more common variation of her name) and the other is a nickname from our last name while I was growing up. :rotfl:

I introduce myself with my nickname (shortened) and if anyone calls me by my full name I tell them to call me "xxx"

I never use my full name except for filling out official documents like my drivers license or passport.

In a work setting or at my kids' school I would use my real name (because my nickname is not an abbreviation of it - it is quite different), but in a social setting I will use my nickname. If they look at me funny in any way I will tell them my real name too but explain that my friends call me X.

I have had casual friends tell me that they never knew my real name, or they had forgotten it because they only ever hear me referred to by my nickname. Sometimes it's hard to remember what various people may know me as - it can make phone calls a little awkward!

I'm Liz too. My parents and a few odd people insist on calling me Elizabeth but I don't really identify with that name if it makes sense...lol

To add to the confusion I'm Judy on my birth certificate, but I was baptized Judith. I really hate being called Judith. My driver's license is Judy because it has to match your birth certificate. Most other documents say Judith. I'm sure it will be fun when I try to get my passport this summer. :sad2:

That's because your legal name has to be on your chart. And after they've greeted a million people that day, they're going to forget your name and peek at your chart quickly for it... Which shows your given name ;) Where I work there's a comment section where some nurses will put in "prefers to be called ___ ." But it's in a really inconvenient spot that you'd have to be looking for. It's computerized, so no choice where to put it...

I don't have a nickname. But for DH, me and his family call him by his given name. He introduces himself as a nickname (just short version of his name) that he started using in college, so that's what most of his friends know him as. I would think people would introduce themselves as whatever they want to be called. Otherwise it could get a little awkward.. :)

Haha I'm an Elizabeth who hates being called Liz. I will introduce myself and always write my name as Elizabeth but everyone will slowly start calling me Liz. I guess I'm the opposite of my fellow Elizabeth's here!

My name really is Wendy, & I don't have any nicknames (that I know of! ;) ). So, when I introduce myself or I am introduced to someone, I am introduced as Wendy.

However, our 3 kids each have longer names, but are regularly called the shortened forms of their names.

When they are introduced to someone, they are introduced as their shortened names instead of the longer names.

At the doctor's office, they are called by their longer names, &, usually when we get back to the room, either they or I will let the nurse/doctor know that they're usually called the shortened form of their names.

On official documents, I list their longer names.

DD is Elisabeth and that's what we call her (well DH calls her Betty but that's just to annoy her haha!) I have found that most people call her Liz and it makes me nuts! I usually go by my nickname when introducing myself, although I had an elderly patient tell me the other day that she liked my full name better( my full name is on my name tag) so that's what she was going to call me lol
