When you meet someone new do you go by your nickname or given name?

I'm an Ashley and there's not really a nickname for that, so everyone calls me Ashley. Occasionally I will get Ash from close friends but not on a regular basis. Just a "hey Ash can you grab that" kind of thing. I always wished I had a nickname because I dislike the name Ashley.

My mother named me Judy, I was named after St. Jude. Almost everyone in my family and my friends call me Jude. When I meet someone new and they ask my name I always say "Judy". I got to thinking, why not just say Jude, since that's what everyone calls me. So, let's say your name is Patricia, but you go by Pat. What do you say when someone asks you your name?

Funny you should use Patricia because that is my name but I go by Patty so that's how I introduce myself.

My parents decided they would make the name they called me my middle name because it flowed better with what is my first name.

Helps sort out my friends from those using official records.

What amuses me is my middle name is only 4 letters, and people who know me all add something to the end to make it longer......like "ly" "ie" "o" "ito" "isimo" and "en".

We do that to my DH also. His first name is 4 letters and I always add "ie" to the end.
