does your supervisor/boss ask you 'Why do you want off' or 'What are you going to be doing'? I figure if you have leave coming, it's no one's business why you are taking off - any one go through this at work??

I tell my boss I'm not going to be there. Usually I tell him why, but he never asks, he just says "ok" when I tell him I'm gonna be out. Thanks for reminding me, I need to ask off for Monday!

Technically, they shouldn't be asking if it's a personal day or other time that you have coming. However, it seems like they usually do ask...maybe just out of curiousity or maybe to see if it's something you could reschedule if they'd like to have you there that day.

I wouldn't argue about it if he/she has already said okay. You don't have to be specific....just say you've got some personal things to attend to or something else non-specific.

there usually just so happy im not going to be there that they dont even ask why

You have to write down your reason for wanting the time off on our request forms, it's been like that at every job I've ever had.

They don't ask why I need off at my current job but I have been asked in the past. If I filled in a form I just wrote "family matters" and they never asked anything else about it. If asked in person, I just told them that I needed to take care of some personal business and they were always happy with that.

nope, but i might volunteer to tell the reason i'm taking off..:)

What's your policy at work? Do you have a formal policy?

We have PTO (paid time off) therefore, as a manager, I just jot down whether it is scheduled or unscheduled time.

PTO makes it easy. I don't need to know why, just to see how to schedule others during your approved absence.

That's my job. I don't want to know why you take a day off.
And I also don't want you to know why I need a day off.

Keep it real.

unless it's a personal day, however I'm friends with both boss', so they usually know what's going on in my sad life anyway;)

DH is my boss so he just wants to know whether or not I'm going shopping.

Too bad for him... usually the answer is YES!!!!
;)

It depends -- as of late, we've had to justify any day off and get it approved weeks in advance.

In the past, nobody ever really cared, but I would usually say why anyways. :)

Nope...as long as you have the leave available, no one cares why you are using it.

My boss always asks. So I make up some kind of really squicky female type medical or grooming procedure, and then start telling him some big, long, drawn out story. Then he interrupts my story and gets all weirded out and embarassed and just says "okay, that's alright, I don't want to hear about it".

My last job had a form we had to fill out requesting the time off and it had a "reason" line. My job before that was in a large company and they (the supervisors) actually couldn't ask why - they figured it's our time and not their business what we did with it It was nice that way.

I've never had anyone ask why I was taking off. I've had bosses that were more like friends who would check to make sure everything was okay, but that's it. I'd probably get pretty flustered if someone did ever ask. That just doesn't seem right.

At my last job, it would depend. My brother's wedding was during my job's busy season so when I requested the time off I put that in there. I wanted them to know that it wasn't optional & it wasn't something that could be rescheduled.

I took the June LSAT which is held on a Monday. I put the reason for taking time off in that memo too because it wasn't something I could be flexible with.

My supervisor needed to make sure there was coverage in the office. She liked to know the reason for the time off so that she knew who could be a little more flexible (for example, if one person is just going on a trip & another is going to something like a wedding or HS reunion).

Seeing as I am the boss I never ask myself why. And I usually get approved unless I am being a jerk that day.

Seriously I never ask why. If they have the time it is granted, that is how it works for vacation/personal & holiday time. As far as sick if it is going to be more than a week human resources needs a medical letter.

When someone requests time off from me I sometimes ask if they are going to do something fun. I do it not to be nosey, but just to show some interest in the employee as a human being. I hope people don't think I'm prying.
