When to start looking?

We are planning a vacation for the first week of December of 2007 for our family of 4 and our friends' family of 4. We would like to rent the points needed for a 2 BR at either OKW or VWL. I am wondering when I should start "officially" looking for postings to arrange reservations. Should I try to secure a DVC member willing to rent out points before the 11 month window opens (since I know 2 BR can go fast) or is that unreasonable? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

You will definitely need to start looking for someone to rent you points before the 11 month window hits. In fact, you'll need everything to be "in place" with your point owner so they can make the reservation exactly at the 11 month mark (January, 2007).

Keep in mind that you will need to find an OKW or VWL owner in order to get that 11 month booking window. Finding OKW owners is probably no problem but VWL is a very small resort with significantly less owners. And you are looking at a very busy time of the year for booking DVC.

My guess is that you can start looking late fourth quarter this year and line something up.

I would begin looking in the Nov '06 time frame.

VWL is my home resort and I tried to book a 2/bdrm villa for the 1st week of Dec '06 back in early April which is within the 7-11 month booking window...nothing available.

Early Dec is a very popular time period for DVC members, so if the 1st week of December is your choice, I would make sure you get a DVC member to book it at the 11 month window which would be 1st week of January, 2007.

If you make contact with a DVC member in November, that gives you 30+ days to work out the details and payment terms so everything is ready for booking in January.

That's right, you need to have things in place for the 11 monht booking window (11 months from day fo check out) so you can get what you want. VWL is the smallest DVC resort, and as such is difficult to get into. That is especially true for December, because folks enjoy the decorations there so much that time of year. OKW will be a bit easier, and one other consideration is that the villas at OKW are considerablly larger than the 2 bedroom villas at the other DVC resorts. There will be an additional queen sized bed at OKW as well.
