When should kids start using deodorant??

My Dh and I are having a difference of opinion (). My 9 yr old is in a sport camp and sweats. He see us use deodorant and he thinks he needs it because he sweats. I say he is too young to start with deodorant. That he doesn't need it until he has hair in his arm pits. My Dh says just let him use it no big deal. I'm not thrilled to start the whole chemical use thing with him. What do you think???

I think it's an issue of body odor, is he sweating and actually smelling like he has body odor?

My DS10 started using it when he was 9.

Just sweating isn't a reason to use deodorant, my DD5 sweats but does not need deodorant.

I don't have kids or any experience with this, so take my opinion as just that my opinion.
I say if your kid wants to use deodorant, let him. Glad to see he has more common sense than some adults I've smelled!

When you can smell him, he needs it. Before that, it is a waste. That said, if it makes him feel better about himself, let him try it...

My fourth grade teacher told us that we all smelled and it was time to start using deodorant.

Unfortunately puberty has started earlier then many years ago because of the foods we eat today. My DD has started showing signs of puberty at age 10. Her doctor said the 4th-5th grade is a time when it begins and they start to smell; to my dismay If you are concerned about the chemicals google "chemical free deodorant alternatives." I have friends who use them and say they do a great job. Good luck.

Congrats on having a boy, especially at age 9, that is even thinking about hygiene. Most of us boy parents are trying to encourage the use of a shower and soap on a daily basis and that 3 days of dirt is not a badge of honor. Don't discourage him - you have a very, very rare gift there

My son plays hockey and is 10 and uses deodorant.....febreeze is good for the equipment but you gotta get the source as well He was the one that asked for it so i purchased it for him and he uses it daily.....i dont see any harm in it.......

I got DS8 some just recently. He expressed an interest, and my thought is that I'd rather give it to him now when it makes him feel grown-up, than have to sit him down someday when he starts really needing it and tell him he smells. I just got one that was only deoderant, not antiperspirant (which I think is more worry as far as chemicals go) and that had enough of a scent but wasn't too heavy. He seems happy.

Our DD had a peculiar cooked onion smell from sweating around the time she entered first grade. We changed to organic milk and that smell went away. She started using deodorant around 3rd grade IIRC.

OMG..I say that about my daughter...that she smells like onions, but I've figured it her body odor... i'm glad I'm not the only one...LOL


Anyways...to OP... read up ingrediants that you approve of and buy that kid some deoderant

My youngest DD is 10, and has been using it when she was 7 (almost 8). She needed it.

I'd let him use it. Not sure why the concern. Does he have issues w/ allergies to products or skin conditions? I'm sure they make deodorants that are more natural or something.

Well, with your line of thinking my DS14 would have suffered through about 4 years of BO just to wait for the armpit hair to show up. Go spend some time in a 4th grade classroom after recess and you will change your mind quickly. Some kids need it as early as 7 or 8 and others don't need it until 12.

WHY on earth would you not want your kid to take care of basic hygiene?

If you are worried about the correlation between aluminium and Alzheimers, fear not. I researched that mightily, (my mom had Alz) and there is no known link after all.

If its other ingredients you fear, use a natural deodorant.

My son is nearing 15, is in full puberty (he shaves daily) but has not one arm pit hair. So if I wait for that, well who knows. And he would sure stink in the meantime.

Both my kids started using deodorant at around age 9.

I agreee, go hang out in a 4th grade classroom after recess and you'll see, your son is on the right track. Its pretty ripe in those classes and I can see why kids' teachers always had a few plug in air freshners going!

You could try that but chances are the kid will want Axe just like the rest of his friends so they can gas out the school with the fumes from the locker room . Axe body wash, body spray, shampoo, deodorant and the kids are good to go
