I'm curious about something.

I've never rented or given away a DVC vacation. For those of you who have, is it common to give the person who's staying there your membership number and let them call DVC member services?

Granted, it's "your" points that are being used, and your dues that pay for the member toll free number, but I don't know if I'd be comfortable doing this since it's supposed to be member exclusive.

Just wondering how you've handled this. (As if I'd ever give up a DVC vacation.:D )

Regina,

If I was you I would call and make arrangments yourself and let them know the name of the person staying. That way you know how many points they are using. that way you will still be in control of the situation.

hi: i made ressies for my son and dil this past summer. they never called member services or needed my member number. i made sure of this when i made the ressie.

Personally, I wouldn't give out this information. I was just curious if this is a common practice for those of you who rent or give away your points to non-members.

Like I said, I have no plans to do this, but I was simply wondering what you usually do in these situations.

When we first joined, the MS confirmation came with the membership number printed on the letter.

A few years ago, they started NOT including this info on the confrimation letter.

I have not rented a reservation, but have provided ressies for others on many occasions. I always make the ressie in their name- the confirmation is always sent to me- I make a copy of the ressie and provide the original to our guest. They have no need for my member number and I'm happy to make any requests they may have.

Even if someone has my member number and confirmation will be sent to my address, but I sure don't see any reason for that information to be available to anyone else. MS does not send out any banking confirmation or any cancellation letter and I don't see why anyone should have access to my account.

Oh how true that is baileybrad. But then again I just used renting and visiting with my mom as an excuse to get back down there I had plans to buy when we got there all along.

dvcreg-when I did rent for those days the person I rented for completely handled everything. I neveer had access to her member number.

Does anyone think I should go for another visit just to make sure my add-on goes good!!!!?

Definitely, you can never be sure about these things. Better to check it out for yourself!! :D

Enjoy!!

MS should not be willing to talk to non members and certainly should not make account transactions without an authorized person on the line (member or associate member). The only people that can call MS other than a DVC member are II exchangers. That's not to say that non members (renters and the like) don't call MS and I know that sometimes MS will at least discuss things with them.

Regina, I just got 48 points from another member. She made my reservations for me. I called MS the next day and gave them my member number and the confirmation number. This confused them as they did not see that confirmation number on my account. I explained that these points for this confirmation came from another member, gave that members name and the confirmation number again. They found the reservation and verified that this reservation was in my name for the dates and unit size we wanted. This closed the deal on our point "swap".....spruce

When I recently rented point the member made the reservations for me and sent me the confirmation number. After a few days I called and confirmed the ressie was there and everything was correct and then I sent payment. I never knew or do I want to know his member number. (I want my own!! :p )

Check out the FAQ on the DVC point rent board here and get soem good information on renting points and the usual process followed. That is where I found out what to do, and where I found the points I rented.

I know I am not a member as of yet, but I just rented points on the rent/trade board, spoke directly to the owner & He called MS put the ressie in My name. In yesterday's mail I rec'd conformation from MS. The resse is in my name and no where on the conformation has his member number. I am glad for that, as Mike Scott just said, I want my own number! :)

But I have a question for all you DVC members..Can I call MS to confirm my resse a month or so before I leave, even thou' I am not a member? Can I put in a request a few days before, like I would if staying in another Dis resort? Just wondering..right now I am just glad to be going!

I would never give out my number or allow anyone else to make a ressie on my points. I want to know what is going on with my points at all times!

We once donated a 5 night stay to our son's private high school as a fund raiser. We made the ressie for the winners.

Hey dianeschlicht- What a great idea for a fund raiser. I may try that my self sometime for our school. Of course it will have to be after I buy more points.

By the way, what did you stipulate in it? Like time of year or room size.

but something about the way you phrased the title of the thread, "When Non-Members Stay at DVC" just struck me funny... it sounded like all of those programs they used to have on Fox before they got real programming. You know, "When Animals Attack", "When Good Dogs go Bad", "When Non-Members Stay at DVC"... ;)

Again, my heartiest apologies - I'm not even sure WHY this struck me funny, but thought I would share nonetheless... :D

Member Services is suppossed to be dealing with Members only (hence the name). ;) The "toll-free" number is not really a free number. It is paid for by member dues. A few years back members were advised not to be sharing the number with non-members since the phone bills were rising dramatically due to people making calls for all kinds of information, not just DVC members. A member renting or giving points to someone else is a private transaction. The member is still the one who is suppossed to be dealing with MS just as if they would be going on the trip.

A non-member who wants to make a special request should have the member do it at the time they make the reservation. If you want to follow-up closer to the actual trip, you could call or fax the resort directly (not MS) and put in your requests. This would be the same as you do at every other WDW resort.

Do have the member add your requests. The earlier requests are usually filled first so waiting until a week ahead of your trip to fax in a request won't help that much. As for confirming the trip. The best ways are to have the confirmation in your name. If that's not enough, a 3 way call with the member and MS is the next best option. I suppose you could call the resort itself about 5-7 days before the trip and confirm as well.

MS should not be talking to non members otherwise though I know sometimes they will field general questions that do not violate confidentiality issues.

Thanks for my laugh of the day Jon... sometimes the oddest things strike as being funny....

I was a non-member once upon a time... loved it so much i never even took a tour... had bought within the year!
