Ever since I started school (30+ years ago) it's been after Labour Day.

I don't think we have a law for when schools can start. There is quite a range around us. My kids start in mid-August. It used to be late August but they adjusted the schedule a couple of years ago. Now, they can get a full semester finished before winter break. And they get out for the summer before Memorial Day.

This applies to us too. I have a daughter in high school so I really appreciate the whole "finals before winter break" and not after. It lets her enjoy Christmas.

My kids start August 17th. They're in private school so state law doesn't apply to us. August is brutal here. I wish the kids started on August 1 and got out earlier in May so summer break would be more pleasant.

When I was in high school finals were in January. I absolutely hated it because teachers would also assign end of semester papers and projects that were due when we returned in January.

My son is in college UGA goes back Aug. 11. My co-worker has kids in middle and high school, they start Aug. 10. Her sister is a teacher in another county and her daughter starts August 1. All of them got out around the first of June so a short summer for them. When I was a kid back in the dark ages when we had to walk to school in the snow up hill both ways, school ended Memorial Day and started the day after Labor Day. We also had from Thanksgiving until the first off and got a long weekend at Easter.

We usually go back the last week of August but our teachers walked off the job for 6 weeks last school year. The kids didnt get out of school until june 23 so this year our first day is September 6.

We have a staggered start - Grades 1-5, 6 and 9 go back to school on 8/18. This gives the 6th and 9th graders a day in their buildings by themselves with several orientations. 7-8th, 10-12th start on the 19th. K has a staggered start on the 22th & 23st. Half the class goes the first day for orientation, 2nd half goes on the second day and then the whole class starts together on the 24th. K has individual assessments with the reading specialist and teacher on the 18th and 19th - they come in individually for an hour appointment for their assessment.

School gets out the Thursday before Memorial day.

I work in the Transition group with our young adults 18-21 with special needs and they start on Friday the 19th. (Our professional days start a week earlier, so I have less than a month left of summer vacation

Edited to add: Our schedule is also set up to end the first semester before Winter break.

Day after Labor Day for us. A few private schools around here start earlier. But, I believe all public, traditional calendar schools start the day after Labor Day... Can't miss the State Fair and Labor Day weekend at the cabin...dontcha know?

August 22 for our kids, we live in SE Ohio. It is a private school with kids from several counties, and we have to wait until all of the county fairs are over before we can start (4H projects/animals). Our last day will be the Friday before Memorial Day. My nephew attends public school here in the neighboring district, he starts August 17.

When my kids were in school they went back after labor day. Then the school went year round. Never knew if there was any law back in the 80's

Biggest district in our county started last Monday, July 11
Next biggest begins August 16.
Next biggest begins September 1.

My kids are done, so I don't have a pony in that race. But the private school they attended is starting August 17.

The first day for NYC public schools is Thursday, September 8. Our first day off is Monday, September 12.

our district starts tue 8/30, seniors are done/graduated by 6/3 with the remainder of k-11 out on 6/9. we've got 2 or 3 days built in to the calendar for snow days so if they aren't used everyone gets additional days off in late winter/early spring (usually a Friday before an existing 3 day holiday or existing Monday late start).

no laws here restricting when school starts-just how many hours/days must be held, so if an individual school or district gets too fast and loose with calling snow days and doesn't budget them inside the school year then their end date can be greatly extended. if they have some other type of unexpected issue come up it can be a very LATE beginning to summer vacation. one of the locals had a teacher strike at the beginning of last school year plus damage from a wind storm-they were in deep doo before thanksgiving so they didn't end the school year until around 6/23.

This year k-12 is starting on August 30th. Most likely k will just do orientation and testing with the first full day of classes on Tuesday after Labor Day. There is no school for anyone the Friday before Labor Day so everyone gets a 4 day weekend. High school typically has freshman only on Tuesday then all grades on Wednesday but things like homework not starting until Tuesday after Labor Day.

DD started today.............she is a teacher though so starts a week before the kids come. They come back next Monday, July 25.

The district I live in also goes back July 25

8/15 here. The kids don't mind, really. We've been out since May, and we were thrilled to get out "early" this year because of no snow days. The past two years we've gone into June and summer felt really short. We expected this summer to feel longer, but it's felt really short, too! I thought by taking our vacation earlier this year that would also make summer feel extended, but that did not prove to be true.
