When do your kids start school?

DD started today.............she is a teacher though so starts a week before the kids come. They come back next Monday, July 25.

The district I live in also goes back July 25

Do they have extra breaks during the year? We start August 10th and get 2 days for fall break, 2 weeks for winter break, and 1 week for spring break.

Here in nj the teacher contract stipulates school has to end by June 30th and there has to be at least 180 days of school. I don't know whether there is a law about starting after labor day but it's always been that way.

My dd will start her senior year on September 7th.

My kids old private school ended May 27.

The overall school year has gotten longer because they now take Thanksgiving week off instead of just Thursday and Friday, and President's Day week off instead of just President's day. And in the case of the second largest district...the one that goes August 16 to June 2, every Thursday is a half day.

I work in the Transition group with our young adults 18-21 with special needs and they start on Friday the 19th. (Our professional days start a week earlier, so I have less than a month left of summer vacation

Edited to add: Our schedule is also set up to end the first semester before Winter break.

I am a teacher too and now have four weeks before we start back. I start back on August 15 and have two days of teacher inservice days before the students start Wed. Aug. 17. Our last day is scheduled for June 1. But if we do not use snow days it will be earlier. We have to be in school 180 days. I live in Illinois.

The first day for NYC public schools is Thursday, September 8. Our first day off is Monday, September 12.

Now, that is crazy! They should have just had the Sept 8 and 9th as teacher workshop days and have students start on Tues. Sept 13.

Schools in NJ can start before Labor Day. Earliest start is September 1. When Labor Day is late, like last year, some districts chose to have two or three days of classes before LD.

My guess is that it is year round, so they have other times off during the year.

When I worked in year round schools, we were multi-track. The school year officially started July 1st and ended June 30th, but we had 4 months off during that time period.

Our school used to start always on the Wednesday before Labor Day. The kids would have a 3-day week. The next week, they would be off Monday for Labor Day, so would have a 4-day week. The next week would be a full week. I liked it because they were eased into the schedule.

In NC, state law says school can't start before August 25. (I liked it before the law, when we got out before Memorial Day but started around the second week of August).

My kids are college age. Classes start August 17, I think.

Something like that wasn't unheard of when I went to school. Two or three times Rosh Hashanah fell in early to mid September soon after school started and we had off.

Looks like NYC schools are off for a Muslim holy day on September 12. And classes go to June 28!!

But that doesn't make sense...
1) Labor Day is the first Monday in September.
2) School starts the day after Labor Day.

The earliest Labor Day can be is September 1. Meaning the earliest school could start would be September 2. Of course, lawmakers don't generally understand logic.

When my kids were in school they went back the Tuesday of the last full week of August. But then they changed the law here in Michigan and public schools don't start until after Labor Day.

Yes, they get 2 wee fall break, 3 week winter break and 2 week spring break.
Doesn't help when you have yard duty in July/Aug and it is 110 degrees out. Not fun.
