When do you think grocery shopping will have a sense of normalcy again?

I find these hoarding threads fascinating. I actually bought some food last Monday night for a 14 day quarantine. Husband's was strongly advised, mine is voluntary. Anyway, we tend to cook at home, and eat a generally healthy diet. Yes, I had to buy extra items, for example and extra 18 eggs (we often don't use the yolks) but nothing near what people buy.

We are by no means hoarders. But I generally do have a few extra toilet paper rolls or an extra cannister of steel cut oats. It is almost like people have never shopped before and have completely bare shelves. It is a very strange phenomena.

TBH my husband and I only buy food (more like perishable) for several recipes at a time. If we buy too much food goes bad and we've just learned over time it's best to limit to several recipes at once. That is normal..this situation is not normal.

It's just him and I. Our fridge is the most stocked it has really ever been and that's not due to us hoarding. When we make recipes they almost always make leftovers so in the fridge it goes. When we went grocery shopping last Thursday we knew it was probably only a matter of time before my husband was going remote (and he is as of today even with the concerns of the VPN network) and so we needed to account for lunch for both of us. At my husband's work it wasn't terribly uncommon for lunch work meetings to occur a couple times a week in which they would provide food so we had to account for extra days where he would need lunch food in addition to me already.

We weren't getting a ton of any one item..no sense in that for us..but our cart was fuller than normal.

Oh one thing I saw is there actually was stock left of things that upon first glance were all gone, it's just they were in the back hidden. We went to get Pilsbury rolls and all the front displays were empty and you might think they were all gone but a full tray or two was located just behind it. I moved the empty tray on several spots just so other people could see they still had stuff. Saw that for hot dog buns too with the shelves towards the floor. But other things were clearly sold out last Thursday.

My house has been self-isolating for 12 days now. We have plenty of meat & staples, but have run out of my husbands fancy beer. So I’ve placed an online order to pick up Thursday morning, I’m curious how much of it they will have. I’m hoping a lot since there are no paper goods, pasta, etc on the order. Mostly beer, coffee, & snacks

Good chance of a mandatory 48 hour shelter in place order in NYC per the mayor so making a "final" shopping list for tomorrow. Ice cream, frozen broccoli, eggs, fresh fruit (can never have enough of that), and a bag of ginger snaps should do us fine for a bit. Not worried about empty shelves since my local markets have been restocked for the most part.

Curious, what would 48 hrs accomplish?

With San Francisco doing 3 week SIP, why do you think NYC would only do 48 hours?

The problem there is that doesn't guarantee they will have it. Most of those they just send an employee down the aisles to get the items. When it's your turn, if they are out, they are out.
Thanks for the heads up.
I'll see what happens Mon. Life's an adventure these days.

they say don't over buy but so far, Costco, Walmart and cvs have had no stock in store and suggest online stores. Then online site says in store purchase only. A bit frustrating. Finally did get an order in thru Costco online to then get notified this morning that the order was cancelled. ( they say too backordered) Amazon pantry is too limited in stock but Amazon prime has been helpful with basics. Lots of eggs and veggies.. not much in the way of meat in the house but we'll make do. No one in my home is venturing out at all. Just not Worth the risk for our group.

They are deciding on if we will have one within the next 48 hours. However, there's no reason to think that grocery stores will close or that we won't be able to go get necessities.

I will admit, I am very tempted to go to my local Ample Hills and pick up some pre-packed pints since they just filed for bankruptcy and I'm worried it may be my last chance plus it would support them at this time. If I do that, I might pop in to a nearby market and get some milk, another cold brew, and a few other things to make another trip to the store further off.

Ask the mayor and the governor? 🤷‍♀️ :rotfl2:
What with schools, bars, gyms (most, not all), theatres, houses of worship closed and restaurants only allowed to make deliveries or takeout, it's already pretty quiet here. Fedex deliveries are down and Fresh Direct, up. Subway ridership is down 60% and the commuter trains that funnel workers into the city, 90%. Parks are pretty empty too..

And I should clarify- a decision will be made in the next 48 hours as @skyblue17 pointed out. No idea how long the order would be and since Cuomo (gov) and de Blasio(mayor) are playing the Bickersons who knows.

I asked because it read as if he was closing for 48 hrs, not deciding in 48 hrs.

Second store...toilet paper 4 packages of cottonelle all alone on the shelf. Yes I bought all 4, my kids might need as well. Grabbed 2 of the last packages of chicken breasts, and they had vegetables. Now if I could just get my husband to eat all the darn frozen dinners he buys at the store and never eats.
Ugh. You're part of the problem.

You notice the part where I said my kids might need as well? 4 packages of toilet paper went to 4 different homes, they are not all sitting in my garage.

I have been stocking up for a month. I went Saturday morning at 5 am for my last trip and noticed they were out of paper & cleaning products, milk and bread. My DH went Tuesday morning at 6 am and said it looked replenished but he didn’t dawdle. He was running in for 1 essential item we forgot.

One of us goes at these early times and there are maybe 10-20 people and everyone keeps their distance. I get in and out and there are no lines.

Our store manager told me last week they went from 3 trucks per week to 5 trucks each week. Next door folks are posting when essentials are restocked and where.

I understand completely but I have a large family it means I am going out every day to buy meat
