Morning all!

Thank you for the birthday wishes! Work is just crazy busy right now and I finally will get to go to WW today so I can post my up or down or same. After a weekend of not traccking if I am not up 10 pounds it will be good. :worship:

Then I will get the threads weight report up as well!

I know I read that many struggled this past week and I think for myself it is in part due to being sad summer is over. The start to fall and school is such a busy time that it is easy to loose track of taking care of ourselves.

I hope we all can jump back into good habits and maybe set a goal of trying something new this week. Eating something different because often we eat what we know and trust, especially if we are trying to loose weight.

I bought Crumpets last week and I have enjoyed them as a base for homemade pizza's as well as with lite syrup for a pancake substitute. Low calories and fat!

I have been tracking minus this weekend on WW but I will try and start posting my food here if it copies easy so maybe I can help share new ideas for you all. :thumbsup2

Well, not too bad yesterday. I can tell that I'm slipping a little bit (getting lazy and not eating my best choices, even though i'm staying within my points.). No veggies with dinner. Too many carbs. So I'll have to work on that again. It just kind of creeps up on me.
Poor hubby was  yesterday. Told me this AM, he lost 15lbs!!! I know most of that is water loss, but WOW!!! Really hoping I don't catch it. Garren had a lighter version of this stomach bug on Saturday, but he only got sick a couple times. Poor hubby was miserable. He decided to stay home one more day today, just to recoup a little bit, but it looks like it's over.

I've got a question for everyone. DH and I are planning a date night for Saturday evening to celebrate our 15th anniversary. :lovestruc Probably just dinner and a movie (if there is anything on that we like). Anyone have a suggestion on where you would go for dinner? Somewhere with good choices, but still tasty.
I usually do Applebees when I go out with "the girls" because there are options I like that have the points/calories/fat counted out. BUT, hubby is not a fan. He likes steak places. We both like seafood. He's not a fan of pasta places (says their pasta sauce tastes like it came from a jar.)
So, any suggestions which I could look up the points in advance or which include the calories and fat, etc. on the menu?? I'm hoping to be good enough that I can still have a LITTLE bit of popcorn at the movie. I LOVE that stuff! But I want to eat right the rest of the day and stay within my points. (So I'll probably go vegetarian at lunch.)
Any ideas??? Somewhere with a healthy and tasty veggie option would be FANTASTIC!!! Like in the 6-8 point range for your WW fans!
Thanks!!! :worship:

Have a great day everyone!!!
Susan

Susan, not sure if you're looking for chain info, but all the chains..ie Outback, Logan's, O'Charley's, etc have nutrition info on their websites now. If you can't find it, or it's a local joint, at any steak place you should be safe with grilled chicken or sirloin, just watch your portion size... have half the baked potato and no butter/sc..get a salad with low fat dressing. At seafood places again, grilled shrimp is good, broiled/grilled fish (just make sure they don't broil in butter), scallops, etc. Seafood is pretty diet friendly as long as you ask how it's prepared and watch portions. I always just look up before we go, and count everything out. Hope this helps.

Is anyone else nervous about eating eggs now?

I am not just because I make sure to wash my hands well as I am handling my food and cook the keck out of food usually. I am not a rare egg eater or meat eater plus I figure if I get killed by eating an egg, it will look pretty awesome on my headstone.

Dawn lies here: Killed by bad egg. Proof God has a sense of humor.

As promised...a recipe for Jane (et al). I'll get more out over the course of the week but it's a start!!

Chicken Tetrazzini

Makes 8 servings/6 points per serving

Ingredients
12 oz uncooked whole wheat pasta, use whole-wheat egg noodles
1 spray(s) cooking spray, (5 one-second sprays per serving), nonstick
2 Tbsp fat-free margarine, divided
3 Tbsp vinegar, tarragon-flavoured
1 pound(s) mushroom(s), sliced (about 6 cups)
1 1/2 cup(s) fat-free chicken broth
1 cup(s) fat-free skim milk
4 tsp raw arrowroot
1 tsp dried thyme
1 tsp dried tarragon
1/2 tsp table salt, or more to taste
1/4 tsp black pepper, or more to taste
1/4 cup(s) fat-free sour cream
1 1/4 pound(s) cooked boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into bite-sized pieces (about 3 cups)
1 cup(s) frozen peas and carrots, thawed
3 Tbsp Galaxy Foods Soy Cheese Veggie Topping

Instructions

Cook noodles according to package directions with added salt; drain and set aside.

Preheat oven to 375°F. Coat a 9 X 13-inch pan with cooking spray.

Heat 1 tablespoon of margarine and vinegar together in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add mushrooms; cook until soft, stirring, about 5 minutes. Remove mushrooms and set aside.

Whisk broth, milk and arrowroot together in a medium-sized saucepan until smooth. Stir in remaining tablespoon of margarine; set over medium heat. Cook, stirring with a wooden spoon, until thickened and boiling, about 8 minutes. Stir in thyme, tarragon, salt and pepper. Remove sauce from heat; stir in sour cream.

Combine cooked noodles, chicken, mushrooms, peas and carrots and sauce together In a large bowl. Pour into prepared pan; sprinkle with grated topping. Bake until bubbling and hot, and top is starting to brown, about 20 minutes. Slice into 8 pieces and serve.

Susan (i think that is who asked) - I know Chilli's isn't really a steak place but they do have good steak. I looked up their nutritional info for it when we went the last time and it was pretty healthy. They have a guiltless grill menu and the Sirloin steak with steamed veggies (I think it was broccoli) is
240 cals, 8g fat, 1820mg of sodium (I don't worry about the sodium too much for one meal). Try healthydiningfinder.com and you can put in your location and it will tell you the places that have healthy choices. They have a breakdown of what they classify as healthy. I think the whole meal has to be under 750 cals.

Victories today:

I did not go through the McD's drive thru for breakfast this morning after taking DS7 to school. Something I've done a many a morning after taking him to school. Especially first day of school, first day back after holiday etc.

I did not get seconds at dinner tonight.

I only ate 1/3 of the small slice of carrot cake and gave the rest to DH.

Things I could have done better:

Not made meatloaf and mashed potatoes and green beans cooked with bacon for dinner.

It's what DS7 wanted for his first day of school celebratory dinner. And boy was it yummy. Unfortunately. But like I said earlier, no seconds for me! Huge change in behavior.

Not shared a regular soda with DS2 while at the grocery store this afternoon.

DS7 had a fabulous day back! He loves his teacher... so far. Hoping for a fabulous year !!

Carrot cake is my favorite, especially with cream cheese frosting. Julie, if you have a low cal/low fat/not-so-bad for you version of that, I'd be all over that.

I'm not a fan of meatloaf at all so I can easily pass on that. But DH loves it, so just like my Mom did when I was little, I've been searching in vain for a recipe that I don't hate. I finally found a turkey meatloaf one that's pretty tasty and DH likes as well.

We're on Day 3 of back to school. Right now we're just having the battle to get youngest DS in bed on time, but so far they all still love school. How long do ya think that will last? ;)

Barb- Piper is doing okay, she's coughing up a lot of junk, which is a good thing/bad thing. Good thing to get it out of her lungs, but also an indication of a pretty raging lung infection. Sorry I can't be more helpful about your son, no boys for me, and learning as I go along.

She's having a blast being back in a classroom after being homebound last year, hopefully she'll be able to stay there, we'll see. Last year she had an IV run right before school started and ended up being back in hosp within two weeks of going back to school, so we decided to pull her. A lot will depend on what we find out at her appt next Wed.

Hopefully it will all go well and she'll be able to stay in school. I can imagine how hard it is for her to be home.

I've got a question for everyone. DH and I are planning a date night for Saturday evening to celebrate our 15th anniversary. :lovestruc

Aaaaw - happy anniversary! DH and I will have ours on the 3rd and are also looking for ideas. I already have his gift and I REALLY want to go ahead and give it to him now.

Amanda has some excellent advice here. Most chain-type restaurants have their nutritional info online, so a little planning ahead of time will really pay off. My fall-back option is always grilled chicken, or some type of salad with grilled chicken on it.

My kids tried crumpets when we went to Scotland last year. They thought they were so cool! I've looked for them here since but haven't had any luck. I never thought of making pizza with them....

Jessica- Is there something you can take with you to eat at/on the way to work? I know there are a lot of recipes out there for breakfast cookie/muffin type of deals. :goodvibes:

I used to make some things to quickly heat & eat... I just need to find the time to do so! Maybe this weekend...

Tracking for yesterday...

B-fast: none :scared1: Unless you count Diet Coke?
Lunch: 2 homemade bean/cream cheese wraps & a whole cucumber (pickle size)
Dinner: Hot dog w/wheat bun, mac&cheese, & green beans
Snack: 1 cheese stick & 1 yogurt
Drinks: 2 Diet cokes & 24oz of water

Observations:

1. I doubled my water intake! It's not where it should be but it increased by 100% so I will celebrate that!
2. If the school buses would show up on time for both kids everyday, breakfast and lunch packing would be a snap. Bus was 45min late for DD yesterday and 49min late for DS today.
3. I need to wash up some fruit so that it is ready to eat & snack on... I have grapes in my frig!

Holy carp! :scared1: Are these public school buses being that late? 'Cause I gotta tell ya, I'd be raising some *censored* LOL!! I understand getting the kinks worked out of the bus routes, but almost an hour late is ridiculous! Good job on the water intake, maybe you could add a glass a day until you get it where you want it?

Jane and Susan, you asked about my son (the grouchy one). He's 13 and is now in the 8th grade. He's incredibly bright, but also socially awkward and incredibly shy. He's got ADD and is somewhat immature for his age as well. So the other kids see him as "weird", and in 8th grade quirky is the last thing you want to be. He was OK in elementary school up until about 5th grade, then the teasing started. And because of the way the schools are zoned araound here, all of his elementary school friends go to a different middle school than him so he feels very alone. He does have a few friends but he "feels" like he doesn't. I've reminded him over and over again about the friends he does have, but he just tends to focus on the negative. When he brings up the negative stuff, I try to counter it with pointing out the positivies. Sometimes I think I take this too far, maybe he things I'm not acknowledging his feelings at all :confused3 He is in the band and that has helped a bit, but getting him to try other clubs or activities is challenging. I make him go to the church Religious Ed activities even though he hates them. I think he's just scared of being hurt or rejected yet again. I know he's just a late bloomer and eventually he'll be OK... but I just hate watching him go through these tough years. :sad1:

My son is almost the same. He is 12 in 7th grade. He is unbelievably smart as well. He was reading at a 5th grade level when he was in Kindergarten! But he is also socially immature. He has HIGH anxiety and is always anxious about everything. :scared1: I know how you feel. I know he is a great person and I want everyone to see it too, it just breaks my heart. :sad1:

I am proud to say I weighed in at WW and was only up......

+ .4!!!!

After eating:

Carbones Pizza (pepperoni and green olive thank you)
Pecan Pie for my birthday (from Betty's Pies Sheree)
Chicken wings
Khans mongolian BBQ
A huge burger and a few fries
Some pop! (I had a headache and usually caffeine helps but not usually one thing I drink ever.)
Tobies Doughnuts (1/3 of an apple fritter and a maple Long John)
Subway
etc. etc....

I was really worried. I just went out of town with the attitude it was a weekend to splurge and knew I would walk a lot to try and earn some activity points.

We had packed a cooler of fruit and had that for snacks so it helped. I have decided to go with the mindset that what I do daily is what matters and there will be a few times a year that eating out, food splurges etc...will happen and as long as I account for them than I will be fine. No guilt and move on. This is for the long haul and I will never be perfect.

I need to take Baylor to football so I will be back later on with the tally's!!:cool1:

OH YUMMY!! Two wonderful MN traditions!
Way to go with such a small gain!!
I have been checking and am continuing to gain this week. I'd like to blame TOM, but I think it has more to do with my intake! I have GOT to get moving!!! Especially tonight and the next few days. Tomorrow is my b-day and we are going to the State Fair!!! Dawn knows that means FOOD!! I have to limit my intake and burn some calories!!

Oh yes. Last week for DS's middle school orientation the bus was exactly 60 minutes, yes 1 full hour, late picking him up. I called the company and asked why it took four busses to get to my son. There is no excuse for the busses breaking down... especially THREE on the same route. They had all summer to maintenance those stupid things. They assured me that next week (aka NOW) the busses would all be up and running with no delays. :headache:

The company is First Student: not owned by our schools. I gave them an earful. When I called DS's school this morning to let them know since, "I know longer have faith in the bus company," the secretary agreed and told me that they had not been made aware that DS's bus was late.:mad::mad: After my first call to let them know he was late, she started double checking attendance w/ the bus and found there was a missing boy! :eek:Last I knew she couldn't reach his mother so she was assuming the mom went home to get him. I am blessed that I have an understanding boss that will allow me to wait until both kids are safely on the bus... I am not letting the bus company know this. It infuriates me. I am documenting everything. These are children, MY children, and the company's business is to transport them safely in a timely matter. I think I will google the CEO's information and send him a little note. That might make me feel better.

No exercise today or yesterday...I'm in a funk. Gotta get my butt moving tomorrow.

Tuesday's 6oz steak with dinner was probably not the wisest choice, but it was sooooo good. At least a lot of the meal was veggies, I guess.

I have a trip planned to visit DBF in Phoenix over Labor Day weekend. We always eat so badly when we're together because I like to go to all those places that we don't have here (Del Taco, In & Out, Sonic, etc) I'm going to have to make a very conscious decision to NOT do that this time, and go on walks every night. Walking during day will most likely be impossible with the heat there.

Sheree – We used to go shopping all together when the kids were little. Boy I don’t miss those days. Isn’t it amazing how much faster you can get through the store without everyone else adding things? Much less expensive too.

Aimee – Great job on avoiding McDs. Baby steps.

Amanda – I hope Piper has a fantastic Dr. appt next week and is able to stay in school this year. It’s amazing how many kids hate going to school and beg to be homeschooled and how much yours would love to stay in school and things don’t always go her way. I love carrot cake as well (the only one in the family that does so I don’t get it very often). I just made some cookies using a carrot cake mix. Surprisingly everyone liked the cookies.

Just so I’m not just a recipe taker here’s one (I used my fancy new program to calculate the nutritional values). It sort of gave me the taste of carrot cake, but a LOT less calories and at 28 cal per cookie (granted they were small cookies) takes away the craving a bit. Oh, they look like they aren’t cooked (they didn’t spread out like normal cookies) they are more of a cross between cookies and muffins.

Sarah's Oatmeal Cake Mix Cookies

1 box Cake Mix
1 cup Oatmeal
1/2 cup Applesauce
1 Egg
3/4 cup Water
1 1/2 cup Raisins

1. Put all dry ingredients in bowl
2. Add all wet ingredients; stir until incorporated
3. Add oatmeal; stir
4. You may need to add water depending on how dry the oatmeal makes it (consistency should be thicker than pancake batter); stir
5. Add chocolate chips
6. Scoop onto parchment paper (9 cookies per sheet) using the small cookie scoop (1 Tbls)
7. Bake for 9 - 10 minutes (like I said they don’t look like they are cooked, just break one apart to determine the timing)
8. Cool for 10 minutes

Servings: 44
Yield: 1 cookie

Oven Temperature: 375°F

Susan – I wish I could help you with some restaurant options. I can’t think of any steak houses that have healthy veggie options. Do you have the Dining Out book? I have a old one at work. I’ll try and look through it tomorrow and see if there are any good options for you. Oh, I just read Amanda’s post. If you do the baked potato see if they have a low fat Italian dressing and use that on the baked potato. I do this all the time and I like it better than butter (I’ve also used balsamic vinegar and that tastes good too)

Dawn – glad you had a good weekend. Hmmm crumpets. I’ll have to try that. I agree with you about the eggs. The only ones that I like are hard boiled or in a recipe. Love the headstone epitaph. I agree that sometimes you just have to let go and do the best you can 90% of the time.

Julie – thanks for the recipe I’m going to import this one into my new program. Just one question where do you get raw arrowroot? I’ve never cooked with it before.

Jessica – I’m on the hunt for a granola bar recipe (something like a fiber one bar) that is easy to make and lower in calories. If I find something I’ll let you know. If the buses were that late how late were the kids getting to school? I agree a letter to the CEO of the bus company (and maybe the school board as well) will make you feel better and might get the situation noticed.

Sara – Hugs to your son. Just know it generally gets better as they get older. Mine are pretty much normal people now that we can talk to and have entire conversations where they don’t roll their eyes (well mostly).

Sheree – Happy Birthday!!!! Enjoy your day at the fair, just remember to drink a TON!

Dana – I hope things look up for you. I was in that bad place a couple of weeks ago. Sometimes you just need to wallow in it for a while just don’t wallow too long. How about if you and your DBF try some of Julie’s recipes? Cooking is a great way to spend time together. If you like them you’ll have a new dish to work into your menu planning and if it isn’t to your taste at least you will have had fun making it anyway.

Today started out really good, then in the afternoon I just couldn’t stop munching.

Breakfast: yogurt, strawberries and blueberries, hard boiled egg (1/2 yolk)
Lunch: salad and one slice of pizza (took off the cheese and most of the ham)
Snack: granola bar, crackers w/rf peanut butter, 3 tootsie roll minis, 4 carrot cake cookies
Dinner: lasagna, spinach salad
Dessert: ¼ of 6” apple tart (Brendan brought home from his evening class)

August 25 DONE

I’m going to hit the gym tomorrow night! There now I have to do it. I’ll try running again, and try and increase the number of times during the 30 minutes.

Hi gang,

Just a quick check-in post. I haven't been tracking online, but I have been tracking at home and doing pretty well, maybe even a little short a couple of days. Slowly getting into our fall routine. DH and I are both on the RCIA team at church (for those non-Catholics, RCIA is the process by which people join the Catholic church, lasting from now until Easter), and the Thursday night inquiry sessions started last week. So that'll be every Thursday evening from now until late November. Tonight DD started back at gymnastics. Tomorrow we have her open house, then her preschool starts Sept. 7. (Which is actually really late for this area. The big kids in "real" school started on or around August 6, and most of the preschools started last week or this. I'm hoping once she starts school, and I have five glorious hours to myself for the first time in nearly three years, that I'll be able to get into a good workout routine. That and the temperatures cooling off. It's been soo freakin' hot this summer that DD and I have barely been able to play outside, which makes me really sad with her starting school in a couple weeks. Lots of good times that could have been had but weren't, not to mention not enough activity for either of us.

Saw my neurosurgeon today; what a waste of time that was. Waited literally an hour and forty-five minutes to see him, and only ended up with five minutes of face time with the doc. He had reviewed my case before I came in, and while he agrees that it's most likely not an infection in the disk, is still going to send me for the biopsy just in case. (I think it's mostly a CYA thing for him and the other doc just in case they're wrong.) He again noted that things haven't really changed since I had pre-op xrays taken back in January, which is a good thing. He also mentioned doing a myelogram to see how much pressure the collapsed disk is putting on my nerves, but did he go ahead and order it? Nooo, of course not! So I'll have the biospy done, go back for results, then probably get sent for the myelogram, and come back again for results and hopefully map out a treatment plan, then probably have to come back at least once for whatever the treatment ends up being.

Between the long wait, short face-time, and lack of action, I was quite aggravated when I left and in no mood to go upstairs and weigh in. I'll try to remember to do so whenever I go for my biospy. (They're gonna call me with the date, so I'll keep you all posted.)

Oh! Speaking of recipes, does anyone else here get Cooking Light magazine? About 6 weeks ago I got some quinoa out of the bulk grains aisle at Whole Foods, but didn't really know what to do with it. Been searching for recipes, but nothing really struck me. Well, I found this recipe in the August issue, and it is sooo yummy! I increased the amount of tomato and spinach in it, and next time will probably make a double batch so that I don't still need to serve a second veggie with it. All three of us ate every bit of it --DD is only two and she even ate more of this than her chicken! -- and it certainly left us wanting more.

Quinoa with Roasted Garlic, Tomatoes, and Spinach

Good morning all!

Sheree- :bday: I hope you have a great day!

Dawn- Way to go!

Jessica- I would say a letter is definitely in order. Our bus system is still run by the school, I have to say, I haven't ever heard good things about a privatized system. They've tried to implement that here a couple of times and enough people said "no way" that it hasn't happened.

Dana- I'm sorry you've been feeling down! They say exercise is actually a mood lifter...so get out there and walk, girlie!

Jane- The cookies sound good! I need to pick up some applesauce, I have a couple cake mixes to experiment with. Thanks for the well wishes for Piper.

Elizabeth- I'm sorry the Neuro appt was such a waste of your time. I know what you mean about free time, when Piper started school (kindergarten, Drs didn't want her in preschool), I didn't know what to do with my 7 hrs a day! You're going to love it. :goodvibes: I've tried quinoa and wasn't crazy about the consistancy. I don't get any cooking mags, have been thinking about asking for a subscription for Christmas to a healthy cooking one.

Good day here yesterday, still plugging along on work. It stopped raining about 8:30, so I did get out and do my 4 miles. The early wake-up call is starting to get to both Piper and I, I'm feeling grumpy this morning, and she was not a happy camper last night, lol. She gets to go to bed at 8:30 though, I'm getting there about 10:30-11:00 and running on 6 hrs of sleep. Thank goodness it's almost the weekend! We've gotten into a good routine though, she gets home about 3:45, does meds, does homework, we have dinner, go walking, she showers, and does meds again. I'm getting a lot of info out of her during our walks, which is very cool. She actually goes into detail about her day and doesn't just say "fine" to everything!

Our dinner tonight was Crockpot Chicken Stroganoff..I got the recipe off Spark and it's yummy and super easy! Next time I would actually add more chicken, it makes a ton of sauce..I put in two breasts, and could easily have done 4 and had more leftovers.

1 can reduced fat cream of mushroom soup
1 16 oz container fat free sour cream
1 can mushrooms
1/2 packet of lipton onion soup mix
1 lb boneless/skinless chicken breasts.
Combine everything except the chicken in the bottom of your crockpot, then put the chicken in. Cook on low 6-7 hrs. Serving is about 1/2 of a breast.

We ended up not eating out at the Mexican Restaurant last night for the tennis fundraiser. I decided that I would rather just give cash to the team and not take a chance of eating out of control. With it being so early in my journey to a healthier lifestyle I did not want to sabotage it within the first week of trying to be good. And going out to eat there would have done just that, Mexican is one of my weaknesses. I know with WW that I have 35 extra points to use as needed for stuff like this but I have already decided that I will only use some of those on Friday or Saturday each week, and only if I get some exercising in during the week. Score one for me in my food addiction battle. :cheer2:
