We just bought 200 pts at SSR direct from Disney. How do I know what my use year is?

Can we buy 50 pts add on at Beach Club and if we did would that be our home resort as well as SSR? I'm thinking in terms of the 7mo/11mo booking window. TIA

it should say on the contract. your guide can also tell you.

ideally, you never want to have to travel in the last 3 months or so of your UY. for example, i have an oct UY since i don't want to visit wdw in july-august-sept.

(i would add that i hope you broke down the SSR contract into at least 100 pt subcontracts...it's generally a good idea to make it easier to sell part if you need to...)

BCV would be your "home resort" for those 50 pts only. you can bank 50 BCV pts and then use those 50 banked BCV pts + 50 current BCV pts + 50 borrowed BCV pts to book up to a 150 pt BCV stay every third year at 11 months out. but your SSR pts (whether banked, current or borrowed) will still only be good for booking SSR at 11 months out and not BCV - just like your 50 BCV pts can't book SSR at 11 months.

at 7 months, you can combine pts to book whatever is available.

For others reading and the OP, you should buy a UY that works best with your vacation patterns.

DVC can be a great way to save some money if you intend to vacation at DVC locations yearly. DVC can also create new challenges and a disappointment or two if you don't plan ahead and buy the correct number of points at your favorite resort with the best UY.

Why is this?

I'm also curious about why you don't want to travel in the last months of your UY. Mine is August; we bought in to SSR in early June. Can you change your use year?

If you book a trip in your last three months and then need to cancel, you are beyond your banking window. If you can't rebook in the last three months, you will lose your points.
There's also a similar holding account example that I can't put my finger on at the moment.

If you never have to cancel, use year doesn't matter what so ever.

I can't believe that your guide would sell you a bunch of points without explaining the importance of UY. Shame on them if they didn't explain it to you.

As I recall all he said was that August would be our 'Disney Birthday' when we got our yearly points. Maybe we weren't paying attention or something but I'm finding out there was other important info that he didn't mention. I'm still glad we bought but if it wasn't for this forum I wouldn't have found out anything. Thanks to you all for answering all these questions.

be sure to read the above link - some owners get confused and think they can't book until they "get" their yearly pts. booking is not related to UY...

I think its really important to read through all of the documentation that they send you - the 4 month rules are mentioned many times in them but I find so few people actually read the contract that explains what you are buying into. I think that the picture book vacation planner even covers the banking and cancellation rules.

WHY DON'T YOU WANT TO TRAVEL IN THE LAST 3 MONTHS OF YOUR UY? I am a new DVC owner, so pardon the ignorance, but I don't understand this.

HOW/WHY CAN YOU COMBINE PTS at 7 months to book whatever is available? I was under the impression you couldn't combine separate contracts/pts without a formal "transfer."

Again....excuse the ignorance. Your clarification would be appreciated.

If your contracts are all under one master contract then they act as one big point pool at 7 months. You don't need to transfer. That is why I recommend that you have only 1 UY.

The part about not wanting to travel in the last 3 months of your UY is only a precaution if you ever need to cancel a trip. For the most part it makes no difference but it's best to purchase a UY that takes your preferred travel times into consideration. If you ever did need to cancel a trip close to your date of travel then if you were traveling late you in your UY you would be past the banking deadline and have only a short time to use the points or have them expire.

As disneynutz said - if you have all your contracts under one master membership (one UY) then at 7 months they all can pool together without any transfers.
