What do you mean when you list "from pantry" or "from fridge" with no value. Did you not buy the item or have you already included it in another meal. Just curious?:)

I think she's referring to the "No buy/Freezer Challenge" thread. (Something like that.) Nothing out of pocket for the month.

Going to cook up some chicken left from the last sale. Will use something in my pantry for a coating.

I have tons of potatoes sitting in my fridge that I need to use up. Will probably roast some.

Broccoli

Entire meal should be $5 or less.

I think we're just going to have ham and cheese sandwiches and a fruit plate with yogurt dip. None of us are really hungry and still not up to par.

That's what it's been like at our house as well. 4 out of 5 of us got the flu I guess, although the only one that got it badly enough to make us realize it was the flu was my oldest. He still doesn't have an appetite. Dh hasn't been sick, though, so I feel like he deserves a real meal tonight :rotfl:

Tonight is spiral pasta (whole wheat) with sauce (free). To make the sauce even healthier I'll add sliced mushrooms, spinich, shredded carrots. And garlic bread (also free) on the side.

Well I was inspired by Good Eats last night and instead of throwing out the turkey carcass I am in the process of making turkey soup.

Turkey Carcass - double free
1 onion .25
handful of baby carrots .25
water free
3 stalks of celery - .25
salt, pepper and seasoning.

.75 cents and hopefully at the end of the evening at least 2 meals of turkey soup. (I will add the extra meat after I have strained the stock)

That's right. Either it's leftover from another meal, or was out of the pantry (and not this month's grocery money;) ). Trying to use up what's on hand and clean out the pantry/freezer, etc. Should be interesting to see how many 'new' meals we can come up with!

Hi there... maybe everyone already knows this... but I didn't, and thought I would pass it along. This is verified, not a hoax.

Kidney beans, and some other beans, contain a toxin, phytohaemagglutinin, which is destroyed by cooking at boiling point but not at the operating temperature of a slow cooker. They become safe to eat after boiling for a minimum of ten minutes, or if they come from a can. Such precautions must be observed if kidney beans are included in slow cooker recipes, as the relatively low temperatures in a slow cooker will not destroy the toxin adequately, and serious food poisoning may occur. Kidney beans can be as much as five times more toxic if cooked at 80 °C than if eaten raw, so exposing them to a high temperature for an adequate time prior to slow cooking is vital.

Phytohaemagglutinin (PHA, or phytohemagglutinin) is a lectin found in plants, especially beans. PHA actually consists of two closely related proteins, called PHA-L and PHA-E. It is found in the highest concentrations in uncooked red kidney beans and white kidney beans (also known as cannellini),[1] and it is also found in lower quantities in many other types of green beans and other common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), as well as broad beans (Vicia faba) such as fava beans.[2] It has a number of physiological effects and is used in medical research. In high doses it is a toxin.
As a toxin it can cause poisoning in monogastric animals, such as humans, through the consumption of raw or improperly prepared kidney beans. Measured in haemagglutinating units (hau) a raw red kidney bean can contain up to 70,000 hau. This can be reduced around 200-fold by correct cooking (boiling for at least ten minutes).[3] Cooking at 80 Celsius can raise the available hau up to five-fold.
Poisoning can be induced from as few as five raw beans and symptoms occur within three hours, beginning with nausea then vomiting which can be severe and sustained (profuse), then diarrhea. Recovery occurs within four or five hours of onset, usually without the need for any medical intervention.

Kroger had a deal this week on their beef chuck shoulders...if you bought the slab, it was only $1.99/lb plus they sliced it for free.
But, it gets even better ~ I was shopping with my mom and she had won a Superbowl square over the weekend :rotfl: , so when we got to the register she grabbed my shoulder slab and wouldn't let me pay for it, LOL...so that shaved $21.96 off my grocery bill and it's about 3 dinners for us. I had it cut into 1 roast and 7 nice sized steaks. :woohoo:

Dinner tonight:
Steaks marinated in a balsamic vinaigrette ~ approx. $0.90 for the marinade, steaks were free from Mom
Baked potatoes ~ $0.50 worth (Kroger had 8 lb bags for $1.99)
Ranch for the potatoes ~ maybe $0.50 worth
Fresh green beans with a little bacon thrown in ~ $1.25

Total of $3.15 to feed all six of us tonight...whoohoo!! :cheer2:
