What's a fair wage for a part time/seasonal job scanning in business documents? The person would work out of our home based office, hours of choice. It is soooooo boring (i'm the one doing it now ), but you can spend alot of time online waiting for the papers to process so it is pretty cushy. Just sort, load, save, wait and repeat. I was thinking 10 an hour but after seeing the babysitting posts was wondering if that seems cheap? We have a college kid and a mom coming over to talk about it this week...

Babysitting is a whole different category of pay. They aren't set hours and part time so they get less money. Plus baby sitting you are doing a lot and are responsible for someones kids.

Depending on where you are you could actually get away with paying the person a dollar or two over federal minimum wage for a job like this. I would almost go as far as to say if this is being offered as like a no degree required type of job 10 an hour might be too high. I wish I could find a job like the one you are talking about at 10 an hour especially if your company gives benefits. Do they have other duties like answering phones or taking out trash or is it literately just scanning and filing?

No other duties, just scanning. Not even filing, after they are scanned they get sent to shredder...no benefits because we need someone to work just for about three weeks every quarter. Papers are sensitive material so the person has to be trustworthy, but other than that no special skills, my 7 year old even helps sometimes! The job is cake as long as you don't go insane from the boredom... like I am tonight !

When you interview each person, I would first ask what they had in mind for their wages. How many hours are they looking for? Will they work every day or a few days per week? At least this way you have some starting ground and then make them an offer.

Yeah, it's not a complicated job and requires no special skill set, but these are confidential documents and you need to have someone who is trustworthy and reliable --- someone you can use each quarter and possibly give them a little work in between. If you pay $10 or under, you're going to get someone who only wants to make quick money and they probably won't be back to work for you again.

Heck, if I lived near you, I would take the job for some extra income!!!!

I think it depends on the unemployment in the area you live in.

I know a lot of teens/college kids in our area who cannot even get jobs at places like McDonalds for minimum wage and would be thrilled to have that job over fast food even at minimum wage.
Years ago we lived in a different state and fast food places offering higher wages couldn't hire enough help, so location and the job market varies and should determine what you need to pay.
Maybe a young stay at home mom would love to work occasionally to make a little extra money, or a college student who doesn't want a permanent job but just few hours here and there.

There is a lot of unemployment in our area. Our dog sitter is senior in college who couldn't find a job last summer ANYWHERE because she didn't have experience... restaurants and retail here have a lot of degreed adults working in them. But I also don't want to take advantage, I haven't had a "real" job in 15 years, so I just don't have a good idea of going rates... The two ladies I'm talking to I know personally, so I would especially like to know a fair working number to start with.

I am a Bank Manager. We hired part-time tellers starting between $9 and 10.50 per hour depending on experience. These people handle tens of thousands of dollars per day and confidential files are part of the job. While I do not set their wages, we have never had an issue with trustworthy employees.

I have worked in other banks/credit unions, starting wages seem the same across the board. I have several great employees that would jump at the chance to make $12 per hour

I would be willing to do that job for minimum wage. Work part time at home in my pjs with the kids around- there are not many jobs like that around.

I have a friend that works at home for a mystery shop company (not as a shopper, as a scheduler/reviewer) for $10 per hour. I used to have a job from home, but we had to have a quiet office space with no young children around.

I would say $10 per hour is more than fair. I would definitely do it for that.

I was going to respond to an ad in the paper until I read how much they were willing to pay. Duties included personal caretaker, housekeeping, running errands (no mention of reimbursment for gas), and cooking. It was part time (30 hrs). They were offering $10 per hour. I'm not afraid of hard work, but that is a lot to ask for $10 per hour.

will they be getting cash and off the books...or actually 1099 employe at the end of the year...cause that means they are technically self employed thus paying taxes and into SSec etc....it makes a BIG difference IMHO
that same 10-15 an hour comes out to like 6-9 dollars....

If the person is going to be an employee and taxes withheld, then I think a lower rate would be sufficient. But if this will be a sub contractual arrangement where the person isn't an employee, a higher rate of pay is necessary in my opinion. In the latter situation that person will be taxed on the entire amount, which I believe would come out to be about 25%. This may not be a big deal if the person has a spouse who has a regular job and their with holdings cover the taxes but if its a person who is single, that would hurt a bit at tax time if they hadn't put money aside.

thats why you see people in total SHOCK when that 1099 comes and they now have to pay up OUCH...thats all Ill say..
It would be important that you tell them in advance OP, otherwise can be a Sticky situation...

I think it depends on what part of the country you live in. If you live in NYC, $12/hr will not get you much. If you live in Alabama, that might be considered decent $ for a PT/temp job @ home.

When we considered moving to FL before we had kids, I looked into hospital jobs (radiology) in a few areas of FL and they were almost half of what they pay in Philly for same exact job. Even though housing & property taxes are less in FL, cars, food, clothing etc still are more similar everywhere. I couldn't even wrap my head around such a low paycheck to come up with a budget. Needless to say, we're still here....

I am a substitute teacher here in NH. My school district pays $75/day (after 9 years I am at the max pay for our district...started at $65) for about a 7 hour work day...so essentially $10/hour (before taxes). I am responsible for the safety, care, and education of upwards to 25 children at any given time. Sometimes I am responsible for children with significant disabilities (seizure disorders, swallowing problems, etc) or with significant behavioral issues (I've been bitten, kicked, scratched and had furniture thrown at me).

I have to get up and get dressed in professional attire and then go to a public school and sit/crawl on the floor, get splattered with paint, food, snot, and/or vomit, wipe up spills, and learn to not drink much water because it might be 3 hours before I see another adult who can cover the class while I run to the bathroom!

I would love the chance to earn the same money for much less responsibility!

BTW, I'm not really complaining about my job...the flexibility while my kids are young has been very valuable..........P

I don't know where the OP lives but she should take into consideration the cost of living in her area. Also, remember it's a p/t temp job, no benefits. Is she going to 1099 the person or is she withholding taxes each payweek or is it completely OTB?

Like I said, if she lived in my area, I would love to do the job. Where are you OP? Are you in NY? LOL

Off topic, but I have the same job, at the same pay!! I was just thinking how cool would it be to pick up this part time gig the OP described to supplement my sub work. I know some people will skewer me, but for such a short period of work, I'd work under the table for cash. Anyway, OP there are probably plenty of people who would jump at $10 hr for part time work.

There are organizations that are looking for volunteers to scan in documents. Yes it is a straightforward but tedious job.

There is, of course, no endless line of people applying for that job but maybe 5 dollars an hour might get someone.

I worked for one company for 3 years and only got paid 9.85 at leaving. Starbucks pays 9.45 a starting and my current job is about the same. The only time I was paid over 10 is when I worked for the ASPCA. We got paid 12.50 an hour there and it was hard labor that was considered dangerous since we felt with dogs the city deemed dangerous and numerous times felt with animals with deadly diseases.

If you know of any openings that are over 10 with out needing to work crazy hours or be in dangerous situations in NYC PM me please because I would love to apply.

I'm curious about this too. I live in OR and am in high school. There is no where were I would be paid above minimum wage, which is 8.95 (one of the highest in the country). They only way to make 10+ an hour is getting a really nice babysitting job.
