What's a fair wage?

What jobs in NYC do you know that HS have that pays 10 at starting? I've been working in NYC for 5 years now and have never had a job pay me over 10 that didn't require a college degree or special training. I worked for one company for 3 years and only got paid 9.85 at leaving. Starbucks pays 9.45 a starting and my current job is about the same. The only time I was paid over 10 is when I worked for the ASPCA. We got paid 12.50 an hour there and it was hard labor that was considered dangerous since we felt with dogs the city deemed dangerous and numerous times felt with animals with deadly diseases.

If you know of any openings that are over 10 with out needing to work crazy hours or be in dangerous situations in NYC PM me please because I would love to apply.

There are pleny of customer service, reservation, hotel, and call center jobs that start at $10/hour and, yes, you can be of HS age and work there. The jobs are out there. It's up to you to "think outside the box" and find them.

How in the world are you surviving in NYC on less than $10/hour????? That's only $400/wk and probably about $300 weekly after taxes. What about health benefits, etc? $1200/mo in NYC? Yikes.

A lot of people do it every single day. I do think outside the box and this why I worked at the ASPCA for a year until having to leave due to school. Every time I look into working at one of the hotels there aren't jobs available. Also NYC's unemployment rate has fluxed from as high as 10 % and has been hanging around about 8% lately.

I know a lot of my friends and I would die to make over 10 with benefits. Our inability to find those jobs isn't with out effort it is just realistically the jobs that don't require special skills or even a second language have a large amount of applicants. My boyfriend's company is hiring a new secretary at 13/hr with being its an they have had over 150 people apply in just 2 weeks.

I'm surviving in NYC because I live with in my means. I shop smart and rented an apartment with friends that only cost my 600 a month. Also most of my adult life I have gone with out insurance because I couldn't afford it. Thank god my college had a health center so I wasn't going untreated.

"One hundred billion dollars"

I assume you are from the Poconos. Depending what area you are from I may know someone that would be interested in some extra money. She just lost her DH to lung cancer and her teenage daughter is fighting cancer for the 2nd time. She would probably be glad for the extra money and the flexible hours. If you would like me to forward your info send me an email to wovenwonder at yahoo.com

Thanks!! :=)

will they be getting cash and off the books...or actually 1099 employe at the end of the year...cause that means they are technically self employed thus paying taxes and into SSec etc....it makes a BIG difference IMHO
that same 10-15 an hour comes out to like 6-9 dollars....

Technically, in this situation, they would be self-employed and required to report their income even if a 1099 is not issued.

Wow, that's sad. Some people seem to just never get a break. :sad1::grouphug:

If you require them to work on your site and the hours are restricted, say only during "business hours" I would guess $10 - $12 depending on your location and how you are doing the taxes (employee vs 1099)

What's a fair wage for a part time/seasonal job scanning in business documents? The person would work out of our home based office, hours of choice. It is soooooo boring (i'm the one doing it now :) ), but you can spend alot of time online waiting for the papers to process :lmao: so it is pretty cushy. Just sort, load, save, wait and repeat. I was thinking 10 an hour but after seeing the babysitting posts was wondering if that seems cheap? We have a college kid and a mom coming over to talk about it this week...

I would pay minimum wage for an unskilled job as described.

Thanks, I think we've settled on $12 as a starting point as they will be contractors, not employees. As I said I have two candidates to talk to already but good luck to everyone looking, it's a tough economy but hopefully things will get better!
