What would you do..............? LONG

OK did he swap it or steal it?? BIG difference! Swapping it is no worse than just buying the right handed one and returning it with the left handed receipt....as long as the price is the same I see no harm in a swap.

I have to admit, I'm feeling the same way you are aprilgail! The poles will be exactly the same, the store has what they need to resell the item. Don't see a problem with it. I would have dealt with it differently but can see how someone else would feel compelled to deal with it the way the men did.

I'm still not convinced there isn't a misunderstanding. It just isn't logical that THREE professional 50+ men would steal a reel (unless they have some criminal history that you aren't aware of?)

Also, this sentence "and as DH approaches back towards that area observes the illegal activity of the SWAP". Did he take the reel or make a swap?

Also, I can't imagine why you wouldn't say something to your best friend. I know that everyone has different levels of best friends, but my BF and I would never keep something like that from each other. As his wife (and the sister of the actual thief), I'd want to know.

How long have you know these people? Is in their nature to behave like this?

I have known BFF and her DH for 35+ years...we are all 50+yo and we all met in h.s.

No criminal activity in the past for anyone that I am aware of!

He STOLE the reel. The clerk in the reel dept. told him the only way you can exchange that particular reel is to return the entire pole. The BP clerk and the BIL (of BFF) argued about it. BIL was not happy that it could not be a simple exchange. I guess that is when he decided to take matters into his own hand and went over to all the poles and swapped/exchanged/steal (whatever word you want to use) the reel for a right handed one. DH & I are using the word STEAL.

Oh and whether or not this is their nature...if it is, we want no part of it..EVER!

I said this earlier and I will repeat it, I just cannot believe that not only BFF's DH but her 2 BIL's decided to STEAL this item from the store she is employed at....she has many, many years in retail and when they were building Bass Pro she went right in and inquired about a position and was hired before the building was even completed. Just a total lack of any respect for her IMHO!

Did he leave the "wrong" reel?:confused3

Actually he might be in trouble-I bet the left handed pole won't work with the right handed reel!(Screws or mounting device will be wrong);)

::yes::

I said to DH what about the clerk in the Reel Dept....will he notice at some point that the reel that BIL brought into exchange is suddenly on a rod and the original reel (on that rod) is now gone????????

Thanks for clarifying! lol about no criminal activity that you know of!

I really think you should tell her. Would you want to know if you were in her shoes?

She is eventually going to get suspicious when your DH no longer associates with them at all. And you'll have to say, "well you remember 2 years ago when they went to exchange the reel....". Then she'll be upset because you didn't bring it up then.

Plus, since she works there, it really is important that she know because if they happen to figure it out, this may reflect badly on her.

HOLD THE PHONE!!!!!!!! I'm sorry I must have missed this w/all the BFF's DD's brothers monkeys uncles in the post.........your BFF works there?? And HER husband is the one that switched reels???????
Well then that's another story. Please clarify OP--

I think it was her brother that switched it? But her husband was a part of it.

And according to the first post, the best friend does work there.

OK, I just spoke with my DH, Mr. fishing expert:
Here's the deal on the rod and reels that are sold as a set. They have serial numbers, that is why the store requested that he bring both the rod and reel back and not just the reel.
So now I understand why the store has the policy, but I still don't really think it's as bad as stealing. I'm not sure why, I guess because they left an identical item, although it will now not match the serial number on the pole that it is attached to.
so yes, OP, you should tell your BFF. Think of the poor sap who buys the thing and then someday finds out the serial numbers are wrong. If this is a $59 set, no big deal but if it's hundreds of dollars it will de-value the set.

I posted a few times that BFF indeed does work there 40 hours a week!!!

My DH said today that he believed that the reel that was exchanged appeared to him to look like a $49.00-$59.00 reel....to him the one BIL took/swapped/stole appeared to be a more expensive one!!!

***DH is a pretty good fisherman himself and this was his opinion only.

well, serial numbers or not, I don't really think swapping the reels is stealing, BUT doing it when having been denied it IS dishonest, and with her working there it is poor judgement.

I wouldn't want a stealer in my house, but if they just want to swap the same thing out, I guess that's ok. ;) Well I don't know, what if they bought butterscotch pudding at the store, and I had chocolate, and they decided to switch their butterscotch for my chocolate. And I told them no because I don't like butterscotch, and then when I was in the restroom, they went in my pantry and did it anyway. Hm. Yeah, maybe I don't want to hang withthem after all.

Swapping with the approval of the store, I, as well think is absolutely fine BUT that is not what happened here. He was DENIED. Store policy is to have the reel AND the rod to make the exchange and as Cindyluwho posted it is because of serial numbers. BFF's BIL did not like the fact he needed to have the pole to make the exchange and after being told NO, he indeed did what HE wanted = stole. :sad2:

Well if that's true, that is certainly stealing.

Hi Karbar!

Hey Paigey ...I am just so conflicted about this.....a situation with my BFF of 35+ years and her DH and his 2 DBros....have caused. A situation that should have never happened and to involve innocent people like my DH who had NO idea this was even going to go this way. :sad2:

One more possibility.

Maybe your BF husband is just as offended at the situation, but didn't know what to do or say to his brother? Maybe he was caught off guard like your husband and, therefore, said nothing.

I think I am reading it correctly. It wasn't the BFF brother, but her BIL.

 It's too bad.

There are too many players here!:lmao:

All I know is one of the guys switched merchandise and the OP is furious that her innocent DH was "involved" because he accompanied the group...and she wants to blow the horn to the wife of the culprit, to explain her DH's not seeing this person again.

I say-drop it.:confused3
