What will make you sell?

We haven't even taken our first DVC trip yet, but I don't see us selling unless the dues became too much for us financially. DD is only 2 months old so we have lots of disney years ahead of us!

ETA: I thought of something. If for some reason, we couldn't rent our points then I'd probably think of selling if we were at least breaking even overall. Though if they took away renting (is that an option?) then who knows how much it would even be worth!

We've had our share of little issues in our trips, but nothing I'd characterize as concerns. So far DVC has given us exactly what we signed up for.

I agree with many of the reasons given for possibly selling in the future. I'll add one more...

Disney not investing in the parks

To me, it is critical that Disney not allow WDW to become old and stale. They need to maintain it at a high level and inject new attractions from time to time. I fear at times that Disney is willing to just "ride the wave" and not invest much in the parks...then they go and do something like the Fantasyland overhaul that reinforces my belief that they will continue to invest in the parks.

Good question though, Becca. Hopefully we will be able to enjoy our membership until it expires. :)

And there's Avatar land to look forward to in 2016!

Into our 12th year as members and after dozens of stays, I'll admit Disney trips, though still enjoyable, aren't quite as appealing as they once were. If we were to sell, it would primarily be due to becoming "Disney-ed out". I could see a time where a trip or two every five years might be enough for us, and at that time I'd probably not bother to continue with DVC.

:scared1::scared1:

To each his own, but I really really hope I never find myself feeling this...:scared1::scared1:

I think that the only rule policy change that would make us sell is if they tighten down restrictions where you can only stay at your home resort. That's the only thing that we're really guaranteed, but I don't ever expect them to do that. I can live without RCI, DCL, etc...

I do love my home resort SSR, but having the ability to stay at the different resorts is a wonderful thing to mix things up.

We just joined in September, and we haven't even had our first trip yet (but it's booked). Frankly, with so few points (we only have 60), the only thing I could see that would cause us to sell would be if they institute a minimum stay of five nights. That would severely restrict the flexibility of our points, which was the entire reason why we bought into Disney.

DVC Members since 93' and have never had a bad experience. We have stayed at OKW, BWV, BCV, and SS. We have also stayed at HH and VB. We average about 2 trips a year and have enjoyed and look forward to many years to come!!! So many wonderful memories which we would never have had if it weren't for DVC!!!

Ditto
We have stayed at every DVC resort in WDW plus VB and HH. Yes, we have had some issues over the years but they were alway handled to our satification. The only reason I can think of to sell would be a finicial issue, but my DD has stated she will take over our membership, if we no longer want it.

because parks aside, it's a great place to vacation. OKW is like a tonic for my tortured body and soul and I really do feel 'at home' there.

I think many of the 'problems' that have been experienced in the past are going to go by the wayside now that Jim Lewis isn't at the helm anymore. I'm going to give Ms. Bilby a fair shot at taking DVC back to where it was and improve it going forward.

Have we had issues with a room..yes...but they were resolved quickly for the most part.

I definitely do not hold DVC responsible for the food, transportation or any other aspects of the park.

My two cents!

We got tired of sending Disney so much money every month so we sold off a third of our points.

We've only been owners since May 2009 but selling hasn't crossed my mind. We haven't run into any issues with DVC during booking or our stays. We're in! :woohoo:

Ditto for us. We joined the same month and sometimes I'm sort bewildered by the expectations by other members. I think we're getting what we paid for.

Personal finances and my DW's health are the two things that could make me sell. I love my stays at DVC and hope to continue for many years to come, that was the reason we bought.

My husband's job loss caused us to sell off most of our points in 2011. Maybe when the economy gets better we'll be able to up our points again. I still enjoy staying in DVC resorts.

Hard to say actually. We bought in 2008 at 32 years old with small kids. Is it possible years from now when we are empty nesters will we decide to sell..don't know. Our contract runs till we're around 80 years old. That's a LONG time from now, so for the foreseeable future no plans to sell.

1) Only allowing home resort. (For the record I LOVEEEEE SSR, but I like change too. It is my 2nd fav resort, but I like going to BC for a few days and walk to park n SAB, and AK a night to see the animals. I don't want 10 nights in 1 resort with no other options. )
2) MF getting outta line where a moderate (specifically FQ or POR), were in line with a small discount. As now sometimes we take mods due to cheaper with FD, or AP disc.
3)The park tickets/APs/ ect increase to fast. As it is now I spend 1K on the room, with MF, and 100-300$ a day in food. (We rarely eat off site, and I do not cook on VK.. I would go somewhere else 1st.) The 1,400$ in APs is to high now, and they keep increasing them. Adding a new AP (baby) in April, increase that cost even more once old enough. DD7 will be Disney adult soon, I think there will be a stopping point for me. I am not sure I would pay 2,200$ a yr to go to the parks for 2 vacations (11.5 months apart). I do not anticipate going to SSR, BC, AK ect without going to the parks. Bonnet Creek, Ocean Walk, and Nick Hotel all cheaper and have as nice, if not nicer things to do.

I've been a member since 1994, and DVC is definitely not what it was when I bought OKW. Housekeeping is horrible (they used to have teams of housekeepers cleaning your room, now it's outsourced and there's one maid). The point reallocations have hurt us, since we now get less nights than we used to. The price of vacationing at WDW has increased tremendously. Dining is no longer enjoyable at WDW and the DDP has made the restaurants way too crowded, overpriced, and the quality of food has declined. We spend more time at the Universal parks now than the WDW parks since the WDW parks are suffering from neglect and are also not kept as clean as they used to be.

Fortunately, I can visit Disneyland as often as I want since I live 90 miles away. GCV
is kept up much better than the WDW DVCs are.

When airfare finally costs to much due to the price of fuel, and I can no longer get a room at GCV due to demand, then I'll sell. Of course it will probably be too late by then, lol.

To be painfully blunt, it's because the "problems" are someone else's and not mine.

I also agree with Tim...

We have been members for 10 yrs and have always enjoyed our trips. Any minor problems were always dealt with to our satisfaction. After years of traveling with our kids we now enjoy going on our own. We also have plenty of relatives who also enjoy going so we never have a problem renting out our points.

As for why we would sell, the only reason would be financial.

Denise

The only reason I would sell is finances. Other then that I knew what I was getting heading in.

50 years of prepaid vacations and annual dues.

The perks will come and go. Some I will like and some I won't. As the saying goes C'est la vie

We have experienced only one incident which I would term serious, as to room quality/cleanliness (roach issue @ BWV). The true sticking point was management's poor handling of the issue. I spoke to corporate after the trip and was advised of the steps they were taking to avoid repetition. IMO that is all I expect. Stuff happens, but as long as issues are addressed/corrected then "i'm good". Don't forget that management needs to hear of our concerns via contact with them while we are onsite, then written follow-up.

Disney trips are still #1 in my book but since we now have 4 vacation weeks to work with (soon 5:woohoo:), we like to shake things up and typically do split trips. I cannot remember the last time we spent more than 4 or 5 nights onsite. Just as well as my grown children are clawing each other for the unused points, ergo my need to add on to my DVC.:rolleyes1

This thought is running thru my head as I try to decide whether to add onto one of my existing resorts or buy VB 'cheap points'. I'd venture they'd go with a longer home resort window or restrict swapping into other resorts only during low season, but I have no basis to back this theory.;) where are those 2012 point charts? lol

I'm a realtor, there's a big difference with people saying they want to sell opposed to actually finding a buyer who is willing to meet even their bottom-line price. If DVC did institute a rule change restricting usage to home resorts many of them would become a tough resale at prime rates, while the value of the more popular resorts would skyrocket.

Unfortunately, this past increase has us "thinking" about possibly selling in the future. We were not at all prepared for a 200.00 a year increase in MF's. We felt this to be extreme. Should this continue, financially, our hands may be tied. We presently pay over $1100.00 a year in fees although we do have to keep in mind that on average, we get to spend at least 10 days a year in the World.

So like others, it would take either a financial situation, health issues and/or old age in which case, I do hope to pass the love onto my DD!

We have had a few minor issues but none that were ignored and were swiftly corrected. Definitely none that would make me want to sell. Problems can occur during any vacation with any hotel, mistakes happen, Disney included!

We 1st went to Disney, as a family, in 2003...we bought into DVC in 2006 (200 points at OKW). We lived in NC at the time and planned to drive down to WDW once or twice a year. We were in love with Disney...our kids were little...dining plan was a great deal (included apps and tips and was like $37...our kids were like $10)...the drive was about 9 hours...MFs were reasonable...we could fit all 5 of us in a 1BR nicely (our kids were 7,7 and 9 in 2006).

Then, in 2007, we moved 5 hours to the north...and soon after that DDP started it's downward spiral. Our kids became adult ages. We lost some of our love for Disney.

We put our points on the market about 14 months ago...they didn't sell and we didn't really want to sell all 200 points, wanted to keep 100, but could not break up our contract. Luckily, our contract didn't sell (was listed for just a few months) and my inlaws asked to buy 1/2 of our points...so we let them pay for use of 100 points a year.

We just don't want to go every year...rather go every 3 years. It's just so expensive...MFs are climbing...DDP is NOT a deal at all and food prices are increasing as well...airfare is outrageous.

We've never had any major issues with DVC reservations or with any of our resort stays. I have problems with the buses and crowds....that's a WDW issue though. I can understand the concern folks have with DVC making changes to DVC rules...like in March when they made it so that resales would not be able to do the Disney collection with their points (or cruises I think). That is bothersome as it may be a precurser of things to come...but it really didn't bother me as we would never use our points to stay at a regular DVC resort or to book a cruise anyway...no biggie to me.
